Seattle-Tehran Poster Show Remix thru 10/15
Curators Daniel R. Smith and Iman Raad have produced the Seattle-Tehran Poster Show, an exhibition of poster illustration and graphic art, on view at the Design Commission in Seattle, September 4 - October 15, 2008. The exhibition premiered at Bumbershoot, Seattle's art and music festival over Labor Day Weekend, and will have a continued run at the Seattle interactive design and development studio in Pioneer Square. The poster designs promote cultural events in each city, emphasizing contemporary art, music, theater.

Swiss artist touches a nerve in Iceland
Swiss artist Christoph Büchel has infuriated citizens of Reykjavík by plastering posters around the Icelandic capital as part of the Reykjavík Arts Festival. Büchel used a poster for the right-wing Swiss political party SVP (Schweizerische Volkspartei) which shows three white sheep kicking a black one off the Swiss flag. He translated its slogan, “Creating security”, into Icelandic.
“[We] received a huge number of complaints about the posters, and demands that they be removed immediately. People felt they were racist, and in many cases they simply tore them down,” a spokesman for the City of Reykjavík, told The Art Newspaper.
A field with four real black sheep and a Swiss flag was also part of the installation. However, because of its remote location, few Icelanders found it.
In May residents of a town near Reykjavík staged demonstrations after the government decided that their area should accommodate refugees from Iraq. Plagiarists Plagiarizing Plagiarists ?
Shepard Fairey (better known for his OBEY posters, if you are not familiar with, you need to step out of your time capsule and smell the flowers, bud) is one of my favorite graphic artists. Found throughout many blogs/feeds sites including your local FecalFace, this controversy of this design is interesting to the graphic and arts community.

Che Guevara. Hero or Murderer?
I love hearing people talk about this. The real human drama of watching your friends be held accountable for their love of T-Shirts, hats, communism, and Gael Garcia Bernal in The Motorcycle Diaries; and then you find out who's spent a Bay of Pigs anniversary with the family of Cuban refugees (regardless of whether you own a "Che's My Homeboy" T-Shirt, it'll be the most fascinating discussion of your life/day/month--dunno, kinda depends on the mean fascination level of your life). This poster, which does that whole photomosaic thing w/ the faces of people Che executed, is distributed by the conservative Young America's Foundation, a conservative group w/ the slogan, "The Conservative Movement Starts Here."
