    • Women who don't submit to husbands are to blame for domestic violence, says Baptis...

One reason that men abuse their wives is because women rebel against their husband's God-given authority, a Southern Baptist scholar said in a Texas church recently.

Bruce Ware, professor of Christian theology at Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, Kentucky, said women desire to have their own way instead of submitting to their husbands because of sin.

"And husbands on their parts, because they're sinners, now respond to that threat to their authority either by being abusive, which is of course one of the ways men can respond when their authority is challenged--or, more commonly, to become passive, acquiescent, and simply not asserting the leadership they ought to as men in their homes and in churches," Ware said from the pulpit of Denton Bible Church in Denton, Texas.

Ware said God created men and women equally in God's image but for different roles.

"He has primary responsibility for the work and the labor and the toil that will provide for the family, that will sustain their family," he said. "He's the one in charge of leadership in the family, and that will become difficult, because of sin."

"...A woman will demonstrate that she is in fact a Christian, that she has submitted to God's ways by affirming and embracing her God-designed identity as--for the most part, generally this is true--as wife and mother, rather than chafing against it, rather than bucking against it, rather than wanting to be a man, wanting to be in a man's position, wanting to teach and exercise authority over men,"

Oh. My. God. (Or not, as the case may be). Like we needed any more reasons to scorn and revile southern American right-wing religious types. Why doesn't this stuff make the headlines more often? How can Christians tell Muslims (and they do, often) that some elements of Islam treat women unfairly? Are enough loons out there taking this crap seriously for it to be a serious social and political issue?

    • Zimbabwe churches criticise poll

Church leaders in Zimbabwe have for the first time raised serious concerns about presidential election results.

The heads of all Zimbabwe's Christian denominations said the poll was not an expression of the will of the people.

In a statement, they said people were subjected to violence that included torture, murder, abductions, displacement and psychological trauma.

The church leaders urged a transitional authority be set up, and said the churches could play a role in talks.

President Robert Mugabe, a Catholic, won the 29 June run-off election unopposed after his rival, Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) leader Morgan Tsvangirai, pulled out citing state-sponsored violence.

Zimbabwean journalist Brian Hungwe says the ruling Zanu-PF and MDC negotiating teams are back from South Africa after four days of closed door negotiations in Pretoria.

Last week, Russia and China vetoed a resolution at the UN Security Council to impose targeted sanctions on Mr Mugabe and 13 of his allies.

South Africa, which is mediating talks between the two sides in Zimbabwe, said sanctions would interfere with attempts to form a national unity government.

      'Spirit of forgiveness'

The statement from the Heads of the Christian Denominations in Zimbabwe comes after a meeting of church leaders.

They said that based on the reality of conditions on the ground, their conclusion was that the will of the people of Zimbabwe was not given authentic expression in the elections last month.

They called on God to have mercy on Zimbabwe and to give the nation "the spirit of forgiveness".

Father Fredrick Chiromba, the group's executive secretary, says a culture of tolerance no longer exists in Zimbabwe.

"People up to now are perhaps failing to realise the need for unity and diversity... sometimes people think of that unity in terms of uniformity whereas we can be united by being diverse," he said.

He added that the churches wanted to help in the current crisis.

"We the churches of Zimbabwe stand ready and committed to partner with all efforts that will result in a transitional authority and subsequently a government of national unity to bring peace, stability and reconciliation within the nation."

Mr Tsvangirai won the first round of Zimbabwe's presidential elections on 29 March, but official results gave him less than the 50% share needed to avoid a run-off.

The MDC says 113 of its supporters have been killed, some 5,000 are missing and more than 200,000 have been forced from their homes since March.

The majority of Zimbabweans are practising Christians.

    • Christian 'I won't marry gays' registrar has illegitimate child

A civil registrar who claimed her Christian belief is so fundamental that she cannot not conduct civil partnerships is an unmarried single mother, it has been revealed.

During an employment tribunal Lillian Ladele, 47, claimed that she was discriminated against by Islington Council on the grounds of her religious belief.

      The tribunal's judgement read:

"Ms Ladele is a Christian. Her unchallenged evidence was that she holds the orthodox Christian view that marriage is the union of one man and one woman for life to the exclusion of all others and that marriage is the God-ordained place for sexual relations.

"She could not reconcile her faith with taking an active part in enabling same-sex unions to be formed.

But she has now told the Daily Mail that she gave birth to an illegitimate son when she was 20. "I would never claim to be perfect," she said.

The revelation has led to accusations that she was not properly cross-examined at the tribunal about the nature of her religious faith.

The Christian Institute financed Ms Ladele's case. The tribunal ruled that she was unlawfully discriminated against because of her religion.

Can people like Ms Ladele claim to be devoutly Christian-living in one part of their life, while acting in a way that's contrary to their supposed beliefs in another? Is this hypocrisy of the highest order, or a different set of issues entirely?

    • Gay Bishop heckled during sermon

Gene Robinson, the world's only openly gay Bishop, has had a sermon he was giving in London interrupted by an anti-gay protester.

The heckler's outburst forced the Bishop to pause in mid sentence, as he branded him a "heretic", and urged him to "repent". A hymn was sung as the man was 'escorted' from the building by church heavies (just kidding).

This incident highlights the massive controversy stirred up in the Anglican communion over issues such as homosexuality, which have lead to criticism of the Archbishop of Canterbury's handling of ultra conservative groups, which Bishop Robinson has called "appeasment".

The national director of the "traditionalist Christian voice" in the UK had earlier expressed dismay at the Bishop being allowed to preach, saying that homosexuality was "something that God himself called an abomination".

    • Protest disrupts gay bishop's sermon

Openly gay US bishop Gene Robinson was forced to halt a sermon at a west London church after being heckled today.

As Bishop Robinson began his sermon a member of the congregation repeatedly called him a "heretic" and said "repent, repent, repent".

He began his sermon by saying how sad it was that the Anglican Communion was tearing itself apart.

But he was stopped when the man in the congregation shouted that the schism was the bishop's fault.

The man's protest was followed by slow hand-clapping by members of the congregation (were they there just to harrass him?), and Bishop Robinson halted his sermon while a hymn was sung and the protester was escorted from the church in Putney, south west London.

The man was taken outside and left on a motorbike (evidence of him being masculine and terribly heterosexual, no doubt), but no further action was taken against him by police officers present.

Bishop Robinson said: "I think God wants us to be bold, I think God wants us to take risks, I don't think God wants us to be afraid."

I wonder what hymn they chose while they were trying to quell the protest... Is there one called 'shut up your gay-hating, you hypocritical so-called followers of goodness and love' I wonder?

    • Kathy Lee Gifford bashes pagans on The Today Show!

On Wednesday, June 25, 2008, during a live broadcast of a wedding reception on The Today Show, Kathy Lee Gifford gratuitously referred to pagans as "nasty, bad Pagans." Ms Gifford's hate speech has done harm to American pagans' ability to live in peace with our neighbors of other faiths. By allowing her hate speech to be broadcast, her direct employer The Today Show, and their network, NBC, participate in that hate speech.

This is a petition calling for, at the very least, an on-air apology. A Today Show program devoted to dispelling misconceptions about pagans and paganism would go a long way toward undoing the damage.

Signers of this petition are also putting the sponsor of that Today Show segment, Samsung, on notice that we are conducting a boycott against them until such time as we receive justice.

    • Propaganda in the USA is annoying! ... most have no idea they are being maniuplate...

One of the most common that is spewed from mouths of the "talking heads" and others is a warped view of the intended result for separation of church and state. I will not go into the details as every American citizen knows them... and has no idea they are being manipulated.

FYI.... Separation of church and state means.....
That the government shall not have a "state" religion, requiring all to participate.

i.e. It is not the United (insert religious name here) states of America. That's it. That is all.
THE END. PERIOD. GO HOME. STOP. THANK YOU.

      People are so confused...

What do you expect, they don't research and just listen to sound bites and talking heads.. well the majority anyhow. The population on "current" is obviously trying to learn truth.

      But the idea is spreading...
Most Islamists and islamic jurists consider the Western concept of separation of Church and State to be rebellion against God's law, but some moderate and liberal Muslims in India, Indonesia, Turkey and the Arab world are demanding such a separation. In Europe and North America, a number of Muslim organizations have the demand for secular democracy in their mission statements

Here's what it should have stayed in the USA though, as things are getting way outta hand!..

... no man shall be compelled to frequent or support any religious worship, place, or ministry whatsoever, nor shall be enforced, restrained, molested, or burthened in his body or goods, nor shall otherwise suffer on account of his religious opinions or belief; but that all men shall be free to profess, and by argument to maintain, their opinion in matters of religion, and that the same shall in no wise diminish enlarge, or affect their civil capacities. [12]

Under the United States Constitution, the treatment of religion by the government is broken into two clauses: the establishment clause and the free exercise clause. While both are discussed in the context of the separation of church and state, it is more often discussed in regard to whether certain state actions would amount to an impermissible government establishment of religion

Enjoy religious freedom, but don't kill religion, God or any other part of American culture.

    • First misogynist, er, sorry, 'Bishop' to leave Church of England over women bishop...

A bishop in the Church of England has become the first to announce he is ready to convert to Roman Catholicism following the decision to ordain women bishops, reports the Telegraph.

So he's also become the first bishop to out himself as an utter misogynist? And he'd rather change denomination entirely (and that's a big deal) than allow women deserved and equal access to the annals of power in the Christian church? And he wants to take his entire congregations with him (congregations which, I assume, must include women. Dopey ones though obviously. Ones who are only allowed to do the flowers) based on these out-dated and offensive beliefs!?

      Smooth.

    • Church risks ANOTHER split: this time over Women

'Traditionalist' clergymen within the Church of England, who are in opposition to the ordination of women Bishops, yesterday had their concerns rejected by the Synod (council).

After several hours of "passionate, and at times bitter debate", Bishops voted in favour of allowing women to be ordained. The traditionalists had proposed a compromise, by which women could be made Bishops, but so that it would be possible for them to 'opt out' of being administered by them. This too however, was rejected by the Synod, and "raises the real possibility of schism within the Church", with hundreds of traditionalist clergy threatening to "walk out of the Anglican Communion" if the Church goes though with their decision "without providing legal safeguards to protect their beliefs".

Can anyone in the know maybe provide some passages in the Bible which endorse or condone the ordination of women? I think it might clarify the two stances if we can see what they are actually arguing about.

    • Obama talks about late term abortions

      from The Huffington Post

....... Barack Obama says "mental distress" should not qualify as a justification for late-term abortions, a key distinction not embraced by many supporters of abortion rights.

In an interview this week with "Relevant," a Christian magazine, Obama said prohibitions on late-term abortions must contain "a strict, well defined exception for the health of the mother."

Obama then added: "Now, I don't think that 'mental distress' qualifies as the health of the mother. I think it has to be a serious physical issue that arises in pregnancy, where there are real, significant problems to the mother carrying that child to term."

Last year, after the Supreme Court upheld a federal ban on late-term abortions, Obama said he "strongly disagreed" with the ruling because it "dramatically departs form previous precedents safeguarding the health of pregnant women."

Pope Benedict XVI will take part in a continous televised reading of the ENTIRE Bible, to be screened live on Italian TV. The event, which last for six days and six nights (if that's how long God took to create the Heavens and the Earth they should be able to at least read a book right?), and will be kicked off by the Pope who is set to read the first chapter of Genesis in St. Peter's basilica on October 5th.

The event has been orgasnised because "the Pope wants the Catholic Church to go back to studying and deepening its knowledge of the Holy Scriptures."

They certainly will with six full days of reading; I even heard that to make sure the message gets across, it's been made a sin to go to the bathroom more than once per chapter...

    • States refusing grants for abstinence education

Only 28 states are still accepting federal funding for "abstinence-only" sexual education. The program is down 40% in just two years.

The abstinence-focused approach has been supported by President George Bush from the beginning of time, as he believes that hiding the facts from kids somehow helps them.

However, scientific research is proving that abstinence-only sex ed simply doesn't work. More kids get pregnant when they don't have adequate information about their own bodies. In fact, the states with the highest rates of teen pregnancy, like Texas, generally support or use some form of abstinence-only education.

More and more people, and states, are realizing that we need to give our kids all the information about sex and their bodies in order to help them make healthy decisions and prevent unplanned pregnancies.

Comprehensive sexual education is becoming increasingly popular and it is being funded by states entirely.

This will be an important issue in the 2008 election, and it has already surfaced. Obama has said that he supports comprehensive sexual education that is age-appropriate beginning in early elementary school and John McCain supports abstinence-only policies.

Here in Texas, it is very unfortunate that we accept the most federal funding for abstinence-only sexual education. This is due in part because our State Board of Education is extremely conservative and asserts its religious views into public policy and because we have representatives like Ron Paul, who support abstinence-only and oppose comprehensive sexual education.

I think this is a good shift, even as a Texan (OMG, he's liberal? can cowboys do that? I wonder what his horse thinks about this....), because I think our kids deserve to know the fats about sex, but what do you think?
