Gorgon Graff’s SkyFarm Concept Meant For Downtown Toronto!
Toronto scientist Gordon Graff has constructed plans for a 58-floor concept building called the “Sky Farm”, (2.7 million square ft. of floor area and 8 million square ft. of growing area), which would grow crops in the heart of Toronto’s downtown theatre district. This could potentially provide enough food for 35,000 people every day. Though the design and construction would be very expensive, Graff believes that the farm could reap about $23,000,000 in annual revenue. Hollywood to go green
This June, Discovery will launch Planet Green in the US – the first 24-hour channel dedicated to "green lifestyle programming" – with plans to reach more than 50m homes. Series seven of 24 which is currently in production - yes, the counter-terrorism drama, with special effects and stunts galore – is aiming for TV's first "carbon-neutral" finale.
Other Fox shows in production – My Name is Earl, The Unit, Futurama, Family Guy and King of the Hill - are hot on its "carbon-neutral" heels. Even Disney has got in on the act by launching Disneynature, a film production unit with an environmental conscience. Its first nature documentary - Earth – will be released in April next year. China bans free plastic bags, even (China's) Wal-mart participates
Effective method?
Hey in Italy they charge about a dime or so per bag and everyone brings their own bag as second nature (well most places).
Article doesn't say though if all 101 of China's Wal-marts participate.
-
Excerpt from the article:
"If we reduce plastic bag consumption by 50 percent for one week about 94 million, equivalent to 450 tons of plastic bags, can be saved. This reduction would save two to four million yuan in retail costs. This is just a result from one week of reduction action. Imagine how big the savings could be if we were to do this for a whole year!" the group said.

Large supermarkets such as Wal-mart has been advocating use of eco-friendly cotton bags since late 2007. These bags are priced at three yuan, significantly lower than their production cost usually of around nine yuan, said Huang Li from Wal-mart's public relations department. Trains are coming back in style!
In the future, there will be the return of railroads and I couldn't be happier!
I've already explained in another article that I think it's time that U.S. really starts considering a larger network of high-speed railways because of our current airline problems. I know it's being implemented in California and in Texas but with all the problems lately with air travel from masturbating passengers to too hot fliers, we need a new mode of transportation across the board.
Also, well established high speed rail systems in use today are more environmentally friendly than air or road travel. This is due to lower energy consumption per passenger kilometer, reduced land usage for a given capacity compared to motorways, and displaced usage from more environmentally damaging modes of transport. In fact, I'm sure more study into it could make it even more eco-friendly.
I don't know why Americans think flight is our only mode of transportation. I know it's quicker but the prices are rising and the courtesy you once got on a flight is now diminishing. Flight understandable when going overseas or even across country but we've got find new efficient ways to get around.
In the future, there will be the return of railroads and I couldn't be happier! ... more -

Greenwashing: "another Inconvenient Truth"
Like the song says, don't believe the hype.
Because of the increasing demand for "green" products, companies have been increasing the "green" claims on their packaging and labels. The products aren't changing or becoming more green, the companies that make them are just focusing on the few things done right, and printing those all over the product, and just ignoring all the non-green aspects of the items. A recent study found that 99.9% of all "green" claims on products committed one of the six sins of greenwashing.
And besides...as the author points out, being more green really means consuming less, rather than just consuming something different that claims to be eco-friendly. Like the song says, don't believe the hype. ... more -
Interfaith Blessing of the Garden: Native Plants are new lawn for 21st Century in ...
During 2008 a solar fountain will flow - and wild flowers will bloom - in a native plants garden that has replaced the lawn at the Lutheran Campus Ministry "Lothlorien" house for students at Northern Michigan University in Marquette.
An interfaith "Blessing of the Garden" ceremony included chanting, incense and other religious traditions from several faith communities.
Earth Keeper Initiative volunteer media advisor Greg Peterson has the story.
The producers thank Lutheran Campus Ministry student leader Sarah Swanson, NMU sophomore from Rapid River, MI for her videography and photography talents that helped make this video possible
(Marquette, Michigan) - In the spring of 2008 a solar fountain will flow and flowers will bloom in a northern Michigan native plants garden nurtured by university students that was blessed by a Buddhist head priest and a Lutheran pastor
A "Blessing of the Garden" ceremony was held in October 2007 at Lothlorien - the Northern Michigan University Lutheran Campus Ministry house near Lake Superior.
A heavy rain poured the entire day almost causing the ceremony to be moved inside, but the sun came out for 20 minutes and the rain resumed just as the blessing and a tour were completed.
Performing the blessing was Rev. Jon Magnuson, director of Lutheran Campus Ministry (LCM) at Northern Michigan University (NMU) in Marquette, MI; and Rev. Tesshin Paul Lehmberg, head priest of Lake Superior Zendo, a Zen Buddhist temple.
The Lothlorien lawn has been turned into a native plants garden that includes rocks from three of the Great Lakes.
The LCM house name, Lothlorien, comes from the Lord of the Rings trilogy by J.R.R. Tolkien.
The garden includes Michigan plants and others from the Boreal border regions of the northern United States including Black Eye Susan, aster, dogbane, bluestem, and Sensitive fern.
Prayers, incense, bells, and chants were part of the ceremony that included a tour of the garden by NMU Student Michael Joko Rotter, a member of Lake Superior Zendo.
"Lothlorien is a magical kingdom part of what Tolkien called Middle-earth - where time passes differently," said Rev. Jon Magnuson, a Lutheran pastor, who founded the NMU EarthKeeper Student Team. Many of the campus ministry students belong to the interfaith NMU EK Student Team.
"Our natural native plants landscaping - our Lothlorien garden - is a sign of a new way of living with the world," Magnuson said. "It honors the indigenous and native plants of our region."
"Lothlorien came into being first as a song," Rev. Magnuson said. "The garden will be a haven for birds and other small creatures."
"The fountain represents the water of Lake Superior and the waters of our baptism," Magnuson said.
The Central Upper Peninsula Chapter of Thrivent Financial for Lutherans donated $1,600.
"Students are involved - and we like to support things that young people are going to be enthusiastically involved in like this native plants garden," said Judy Quirk, president of the Thrivent central U.P. chapter.
A fountain in the garden is going to be converted to solar power in the spring of 2008 and the sun will charge a battery allowing the water to flow in cloudy weather.
"We hope this will inspire people to learn the benefits that native plants have, such as requiring a third less water, and no pesticides or fertilizers," said Rotter.
Rotter said the "garden represents the hope of the future."
