Getting To Know Shillong Lajong FC
“Football is to the people of North east what cricket is to the rest of India”. This itself says so much about the region which has given us so many great footballers in the past, and continues to produce many more on a regular basis.
The biggest club in the region, Lajong SC, is now finally pushing for representation of the region nationally, through a spot in the National 2nd division. Goal.com spoke to the General Secretary of the famous Shillong club, Mr. Larsing Ming Sawyan, who was kind enough to discuss all things ‘Lajong’ with us.
1) So how did Lajong SC come about into existence?
Well, the club was formed 25 years ago, after a group of friends got together and decided to do something for football in the North-east. Lajong, which means “Our own”, was created with the initial vision to become the biggest club in the north-eastern region of India. We have applied for a change in name, which will rechristen us as “Shillong Lajong Football Club”, and push us on to the national front.
2) You tell us that Lajong is the only privately funded club in the North-east. Where does the club get its main funding from?
The club’s founding and current President, Mr. P.D.Sawyan, who is also an entrepreneur, has been funding the club ever since its birth in 1983 through his business group, Center Point Group Enterprise. However, this year we have reached an agreement with the largest mobile service provider in the north-east, Aircel, who will also be sponsoring us from now on. “Football is to the people of North east what cricket is to the rest of India”. Army orders Lions draft pick Campbell to withdraw
DETROIT (AP)—Caleb Campbell will not get a chance to play for the Detroit Lions because of a change in military policy.
Campbell was a seventh-round draft pick for the Lions in April. At the time, Army policy would have allowed the West Point graduate to serve as a recruiter if he made the team.
But a subsequent Department of Defense policy has superseded the 2005 Army policy.
In a letter to Lions president Matt Millen dated Wednesday, U.S. Army Lt. Col. Jonathan P. Liba wrote that Campbell has been ordered to give up professional football for “full-time traditional military duties.”
Liba wrote that 2nd Lt. Campbell may ask to be released from his active duty obligations in May 2010.
Liba said Campbell was allowed to enter the draft “in good faith.”

Packers are shopping Brett Favre
The Green Bay Packers have spoken to several teams, including at least one NFC team, to see what they would be willing to offer for quarterback Brett Favre, NFL Network reports.
The report did not indicate how many teams were contacted in what were termed 'exploratory' phone calls.
Sporting News contributor Mike Florio of profootballtalk.com reports that the Ravens were one of the teams the Packers contacted to gauge interest in Favre. The Ravens told Green Bay they were not interested, Florio writes.
One source speculated for NFL Network that the Packers are simply gauging what Favre is worth on the open market before deciding whether to try to trade him. Favre has said that he does want to play in 2008, and he asked for his release from the Packers, indicating he would be willing to play for a different team if Green Bay doesn't want him.
The Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel reports that other teams potentially interested in Favre are the Bears, Bills, Buccaneers, Chiefs, Dolphins, Falcons, Jets, Lions, Panthers, Redskins and Vikings.

India beckons, Real Madrid writes to Sports Minister
New Delhi, Jul 18 : Raul, Fabio Cannavaro, Ruud van Nistelrooy and fellow Galacticos descending here to weave magic on carpet does not sound daydreaming anymore with Real Madrid President Ramon Calderon Ramos writing to Sports Minister MS Gill, seeking a passage to India.
Happy to see what started as a casual discussion between two tennis fans on the sidelines of the Wimbledon final taking a more concrete shape, Gill has reacted by promptly writing to his cabinet colleague and All India Football Federation (AIFF) President Priya Ranjan Dasmunsi, seeking to discuss the next course of action.
It all started during the Wimbledon when eventual winner Rafael Nadal was waging a grim battle against the man he would topple, Roger Federer, in that epic final. Gill had gone to watch the match and there he came across the Real Madrid President and told him how more than a lakh people turned out in Kolkata in May when Bayern Munich came to play what was star goalkeeper Oliver Kahn’s farewell match. Word Cup sex shop plans condemned
Plans to legalise prostitution for the 2010 football World Cup in South Africa have been criticised by religious groups and opposition parties.
The local authority in Durban wants legalised adult entertainment venues during the tournament.
But African Nazareth Democratic Movement (ANDM) president Thokozani Hlatshwayo said the proposal was "against the word of God".
Opposition parties fear that, if introduced, it could become permanent.
The main opposition Democratic Alliance and the youth wing of the Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) have condemned the suggestion.
"Plans to legalise Durban's red-light districts before the 2010 World Cup should be condemned in the strongest possible manner," said Pat Lebenya-Ntanzi of the IFP youth brigade.
She said the South African government was sending out mixed messages to young people.
"On the one hand it preaches strong family values and moral regeneration, but on the other hand they want to legalise prostitution on Durban's streets. It doesn't make sense," she said.
An additional concern is Aids - some five million people in South Africa are HIV-positive - making it one of the world's worst-hit countries.
Thrives
Durban's municipality said Germany had many adult entertainment centres during the World Cup in 2006, which were very popular with visitors.
It said while prostitution was illegal in South Africa, it could not ignore the fact that the sex industry thrives during major events like the World Cup.
To address this, entertainment centres such as strip clubs and escort agencies would be located in special areas where they would be safe and easily accessible.
Municipality Deputy Mayor Logie Naidoo said a final decision had not yet been taken.
"The national government will give us a lead in this matter, whether it relates to the 2010 Soccer World Cup or any other time for that matter," he said.
Safe environments
City officials admit that there are already young girls and women working as prostitutes on the streets of Durban.
They say plans are already in place to help them operate in safe environments. Plans to legalise prostitution for the 2010 football World Cup in South Africa have been criticised by religious groups and opposition... more -
Brett Favre: Packers should let me play elsewhere
Brett Favre finally is speaking for himself: He wants to play but doesn't feel welcome in Green Bay, so he's asking to be released.
Favre said he was "never fully committed" to retiring and felt pressured by the Packers to make a decision, a notion Packers general manager Ted Thompson and coach Mike McCarthy tried to dispel in an interview with the AP on Saturday.
"Ted always wanted Brett back," McCarthy said. "We always wanted Brett back."
Favre told Fox he understands that the Packers want to move on — but if they're doing so, they should let him go.

I am afraid jihad it is more of a way for people to channel aggression that is formed from poverty and social issues in some communities or governments, than anything truly holy... so sad how people are used..
I wonder if something as simple as sports were widely encouraged, if more frustration would be vented in a healthy way?
Then again, people might wake up and realize their religious leaders - of all people - are using them as pawns, if they learned strategy.. sports does teach that. Oh man, that sucks.
Here is part of the article sighted above... go to the link, it's interesting.
They are talking about TV coverage of the Islam Jihad...
"First there was the usual ritualistic condemnation of the extremists, but this was then followed by a much more detailed discussion of why we are to blame for whatever Muslims extremists do to us.
To all intents and purposes this placed the secular leftist firmly on the side of the Muslim representative, several of whom had decidedly alarming ideas. At least one was a supporter of suicide bombings, sorry, 'martyrdom operations'." Olbermann & Patrick are Reunited
Very possibly the best SportsCenter duo in the history of the network, Dan Patrick and Keith Olbermann will once again share the screen thanks to NBC. Bob Costas will host the NFL show that includes Cris Collinsworth, Jerome Bettis, Tiki Barber and Peter King. Can't wait for this. Great times but makes me think of my favorite SportsCenter anchors, teams and hosts. There were many but who's your favorite?
From the article
By Michael Hiestand, USA TODAY
Dan Patrick, the longtime ESPN anchor, will this season join NBC's Sunday night NFL studio show – where he'll reunite with Keith Olbermann, his on-air ESPN SportsCenter partner between 1992 and 1997.
Patrick will also join a big cast on a show wrapped around NBC's Sunday primetime game.
He'll be the show's third co-host – along with Olbermann and Cris Collinsworth – on a show hosted by Bob Costas that includes analysts Jerome Bettis, Tiki Barber and reporter Peter King.
Said Olbermann Monday: "My concern is that we didn't have enough people on the show. We really needed that 19th guy."
Patrick, who left ESPN last year and now hosts a syndicated daytime radio show, had a contract that prohibited him TV work until this September. His NBC deal will also include working on NBC's Olympic coverage, starting with the 2010 Winter Games.
Monday, NBC Sports Chairman Dick Ebersol and Patrick both said the idea for Patrick joining the NBC show came from Costas.
Said Patrick: "If Bob didn't sign off on this, there's no way I'd walk into the room." Very possibly the best SportsCenter duo in the history of the network, Dan Patrick and Keith Olbermann will once again share the scree... more -

Bret Favre Considers Return to Football
GREEN BAY, Wis. (AP) — Brett Favre is considering coming out retirement, according to an ESPN report. ESPN's Chris Mortensen said Wednesday a Green Bay Packers source told him the 38-year-old Favre told coach Mike McCarthy in the past two weeks that he has the itch to play.
The Packers' former quarterback retired March 6 after a 17-year career.
Cornerback Al Harris said on ESPN's NFL Live that Favre also made similar comments to him.
"I know he has the itch to come back and play," Harris said. "If he will or not, I don't know."
The Packers had planned to use Aaron Rodgers as their quarterback for the upcoming season.
"Aaron is our quarterback," Harris said. "Brett's retired. But if he wanted to come back, there would be some guys who wouldn't mind it. I would welcome him back with open arms."
Favre's commitment to retirement has been questioned since his announcement. That talk resumed in mid-June when Favre withdrew from the American Century Celebrity Golf Championship at Lake Tahoe, scheduled for July 11-13.
Tournament spokesman Steve Griffith said then that Favre had to miss the event because of a scheduling conflict.
Favre is the NFL's only three-time MVP and leads the league with 442 touchdown passes, 61,655 yards passing and 160 career victories. He started 253 consecutive regular-season games, more than any other quarterback in history. Including the playoffs, his streak stands at 275. GREEN BAY, Wis. What not to do when questioned by the Police
If you must give a fake name to the cops, be sure it's not the name of a burglar with arrest warrants out for him.
Arsenal legend Michael Thomas scored a real own goal when he gave a false name to police...which turned out to be that of a wanted burglar.
The 40-year-old footballer - who famously netted against Liverpool at Anfield in the last minute of the 1989 season to win Arsenal the old First Division - was a passenger in a car when it was stopped by officers checking drivers' insurance.
When Thomas, who was carrying a large sum in cash, was asked who he was he bizarrely gave the name of a wanted man. He was arrested and taken to Chingford police station in East London where he was questioned for two hours before being released without charge. A police source said: "Thomas was in a car that was stopped as part of a routine check. When he said his name was that of a wanted burglar he was obviously arrested. If you must give a fake name to the cops, be sure it's not the name of a burglar with arrest warrants out for him. ... more -

Don Imus strikes again: shock jock uses racial remark in discussion about "Pacman"
Today, Don Imus did it again. While on the air with his co-host, the topic of Adam "Pacman" Jones being arrested six times in two years while playing for the NFL Tennessee Titans was brought up. Imus ask his co-host, what color was "Pacman" ? His co-host referred, "he's African American. Imus then said, " Well, there you go, now you know ", suggesting that there should be no surprise to his multiple arrest because, he's Black. Imus, as everyone in radio does, knew that Adam Jones was Black. He was suggesting to the radio listeners that they should have been surprised at all.
Network officials were not available for immediate comment. Most people were surprised that Imus was hired by any station after his racial remarks were made about the African American women on the Rutgers University basketball team a while back. Most will be surprised if he remains on the air at all this time, after suggesting to American radio listeners that, people should not be surprise about the criminal records of African Americans.
Adam Jones was suspended for a full season by NFL Commisioner, Roger Goodell for being part of a group that was involved in a Las Vegas strip club brawl that left one man paralyzed for life, after being shot by a member of Pacman;s click. Jones had foolishly allowed the club to use $100,000.00 dollars of his personal money to "make it rain" one hundred dollar bills at midnight on New Years Eve of 2007. The money was left unprotected and fight broke out between members of Pacman's entourage and club employees. Jones was charged but not found guilty of directly being in the brawl. He recently sign a new contract with Dallas Cowboy owner Jerry Jones. The league has not yet completely lifted his suspension, however he has been granted permission to practice with the team.
