The Politics of Karma, the Karma of Politics
Politics can eat at the psyche. It's part of my work, so I can't escape it - even in my thoughts. Once I tried relaxing with a Tibetan Buddhist text which said that, because of numberless rebirths, everybody was once your mother. In a past life they gave you a mother's love and care. It's a beautiful image, but I could only picture one person:
Dick Cheney.
This just in ...
"Victory creates hatred," said the Buddha. "Defeat creates suffering."
Early exit polling indicates ...
"The wise ones desire neither victory nor defeat."
There are charges of vote-counting irregularities ...
"He who wins will be defeated." The Buddha said that. "Election years wreak emotional havoc." I said that. They turn your world inside out and drag you through tortured psychic landscapes, as if the cable news networks were broadcasting from inside a Hieronymus Bosch painting. It's a nonstop barrage of scarring images and manufactured emotions: war, disaster, sorrow, love, hate, fear, anger, resentment ... pain.
And this election's been going on for two long years.
Traditional Buddhist images of hell seem all too familiar in a campaign year. Realms of ice and fire? Sounds like the New Hampshire and Arizona primaries. Demons, hungry ghosts, cursed spirits who hack at one another with iron claws? They're all on Meet the Press.
Spirituality may be about reconciliation, forgiveness, and healing, but politics is about battle. And where other political systems are parliamentary and consensus-driven, the American two-party system is binary, zero-sum. One side achieves total victory and the other loses everything. It's hell on a person's karma. So, as a spiritual novice, it seemed like a good idea to seek guidance from wiser heads. But like many men, I have to be pretty desperate before I ask for directions.
Things were getting desperate. Democrats, onetime allies, had divided themselves into warring Obama and Clinton camps. Bitterness and resentment were rampant. I was particularly frustrated by "identity politics" - if there is anatta, "no self," why should it matter if the candidate looks like you? - but my own reactions were getting excessive, too.
(Side thought: If you achieve the realization of "non-self," do you still get one vote?)
The mind is burning, said Shakyamuni. The eye is burning, the ear is burning - burning with the fire of hate, the fire of delusion. Burning with lamentations, grief and despair. To which I might have added: Burning with attack ads. Burning with sexually and racially biased reporting. Burning with pointless debates ...
I was - literally - "losing my cool." I wanted to run away, to find a quiet place. So I finally sought some advice. On a static-filled phone line from rural Thailand, teacher and activist Sulak Sivaraksa warned against isolation. "Many Western Buddhists think of meditation as peaceful escapism," he told me, "a way of leaving society. But you must try to help each other fight structural violence."
"It's not Buddhist to pursue a selfish Nirvana."
Next I called Wes Nisker, a Vipassana teacher who once hosted a San Francisco news broadcast. I'd always appreciated his tagline: "If you don't like the news, make some of your own." I told him of my frustration with political polarization. "That's why I think so many people are drawn to Obama's candidacy," he said. "Part of his appeal is that people see his attitude and presence as healing and non-divisive."
He continued: "That leads into the fact that there really isn't a line between activism and spiritual life. Whatever you do in the world is a reflection of your realization and your practice, and the sincerity and depth to which you've taken it."

Riconosciuta la salma di Domenico Riso
RICONOSCIUTA LA SALMA DI DOMENICO
Disastro aereo Madrid. Riso identificato dal Dna

Disastro aereo Madrid. Tutti i pezzi

Restituiamo dignità a Domenico Riso

NYC cop gets stripped for Critical Mass incident
The cop in the Critical Mass body slam incident that was caught on tape and put up on YouTube has been stripped of his badge and gun. Note to law enforcement: if you're going to abuse your power in front of a crowd of people, and then LIE LIE LIE about it, expect to be busted. Check out his fantastical criminal court complaint against the cyclist at the link. The cop reported that the cyclist "steered [his] bicycle in the direction of [the cop] and drove [his] bicycle directly into [cop's] body, causing [cop] to fall to the ground and causing [cop] to suffer lacerations on [his] forearms."
My favorite part is at the end of this form, it states "False statements made herein are punishable as a class A misdemeanor." Sorry Mr. Cop, you are not ABOVE the law. 25 ways to help a fellow human being today
"Too often the trend in our society is for people to be separated from either other, to be cut off from the great mass of humanity, and in doing so to be dehumanized a little bit more with each step.
Cars have taken us off the streets, where we used to greet each other and stop to chat. Cubicles have taken away a bit of the humanity in working, as have factories and even computers to some extent. Television has planted us firmly in our living rooms, instead of out with other people. Even movie theaters, where many people get together, cut us off from true conversation because we’re staring at a big screen.
And while I’m not railing against any of these inventions (except perhaps the cubicle), what we must guard against is the tendency of that individuality to have us focused on ourselves to the exclusion of our fellow human beings. The tendency towards selfishness rather than giving, on helping ourselves rather than helping our brothers and sisters in humanity.
I’m not saying we’re all like that, but it can happen, if we’re not careful.
So strike back against the selfishness and greed of our modern world, and help out a fellow human being today. Not next month, but today.
Helping a fellow human being, while it can be inconvenient, has a few humble advantages:
It makes you feel better about yourself;
It connects you with another person, at least for a moment, if not for life;
It improves the life of another, at least a little;
It makes the world a better place, one little step at a time;
And if that kindness is passed on, it can multiply, and multipy.
So take just a few minutes today, and do a kindness for another person. It can be something small, or the start of something big. Ask them to pay it forward. Put a smile on someone’s face.
Don’t know where to start? Here’s an extremely incomplete list, just to get you thinking — I’m sure you can come up with thousands more if you think about it." "Too often the trend in our society is for people to be separated from either other, to be cut off from the great mass of humanit... more -

Dior drops Sharon Stone after quake comments
Sharon Stone used to be a great ad for fewer wrinkles, but the 50-year-old's outburst linking the Sichuan earthquake to bad karma because of China's policy on Tibet means Christian Dior posters are coming down all over the Chinese capital.
The French fashion house has issued an apology for Stone's comments and pulled her from its Chinese ad campaign for anti-ageing products. And in good time, it appears, given that the Xinhua news agency has described Stone as "the public enemy of all mankind".
Stone is reasonably popular in China, having appeared at the Shanghai Film Festival last year, and she was well received for her comments about life and love, as well as her praise for China's ancient civilisation. At the same time, the face-cream saleswoman did cause consternation for accusing people of being skin-deep in their thinking about wrinkles. But that was nothing compared to the bad karma comments.
Stone said she was "deeply sorry" for causing anguish and anger among Chinese people for her candid, ill-judged remarks about China's worst natural disaster in three decades. So far, the Sichuan earthquake has killed about 70,000 people and left five million homeless.
"My erroneous words and deeds angered and saddened the Chinese people, and I sincerely apologise for this," the Basic Instinct star said in a statement issued by Dior China. "I am willing to take part in the relief work of China's earthquake and wholly devote myself to helping affected Chinese people." Myanmar: many Burmese attribute cyclone to karma
About 80 percent of Burma's estimated 52 million people are Buddhist, and many there rely on the principle of karma to explain the storm. Many of Burma's people believe cyclone Nargis is a karmic consequence of its military rulers' brutal crackdown on Buddhist monks last year.
The word "karma" is often misunderstood by Westerners as one's inescapable destiny, scholars say. In Sanskrit, the word means "action" and refers to the act that creates one's fate, not fate itself. For Buddhists, particularly those in Southeast Asia, karma regulates morality as firmly as Newton's law rules motion: to every action there is an equal and opposite reaction.
