    • Bike Miami Ciclovía!

Downtown Miami closes streets to cars, opens city to Bicyclists and Pedestrians.

Ciclovía (also Ciclovia or Cyclovia) is a Spanish term, meaning "bike path," used in Latin America to mean either a permanent designated bicycle route or a temporary event closing of the street to automobiles to allow dominance by other users. Permanent designated bicycle lanes are also known as ciclo-rutas, while streets temporarily closed for that purpose are always called ciclovías.

    • SAVE THE DATE - BIKEMIAMI - November 9th | Transit Miami

What do New York City, San Francisco, Portland and Miami have in common? Ah…not much you would say. The first three are revered as some of our country’s most progressive, sustainable and livable cities. But Miami? Well, the times they are ‘a changin’.

      Enter BikeMiami.

Last December I wrote an op-ed to the Miami Herald urging city officials to make a Miami more bicycle-friendly. I wrote because the pure lack of attention being paid to bicyclists represented a larger issue. Miami was choosing not to compete as a 21st century city. Although bicycle-friendliness does not encompass all things livable in a city, those cities who have pursued such a noble goal are those that are also progressive in many other ways. As a result, they are capable of outperforming others in the pursuit of new talent, investment and sustainability — a buzzword if I have ever heard one.

One of the items that I mentioned in said op-ed was Bogota’s Ciclovia, an event that closes 70km of city streets and hands them over to what makes a city work, it’s people. The shear success of Ciclovia — with thousands of bicyclists, pedestrians, joggers etc. participating every Sunday — has had a catalytic effect on how North American cities are starting to view their streets. In many respects, Bogota has become what Jane Jacobs calls a ‘pattern city.’ That is, a city that inspires other cities to emulate its success.

Well, mark your calendar Miamians, because the City of Miami is closing several downtown streets for what is now being dubbed BIKEMIAMI. Sources close to Transit Miami confirm this landmark event will take place on Sunday, November 9th. The exact times have not been scheduled, but know that it will likely run from mid-morning to mid-afternoon. Bicyclists, skaters, pedestrians, joggers, roller bladers, yoga fanatics and everyone else and there mother will be invited to come downtown and enjoy their city — without cars.

All the details are still being worked out, but TM will be there every step of the way to report on updates and concurrent events as they become available.

A big thank you has to be bestowed upon the Bicycle Action Committee and those within the Mayor’s office who have made this little seed I planted grow into a reality. Also, please know the cooperation across City departments and with groups like the Miami DDA and the folks who run the ING Miami Marathon has been instrumental.

      More to come…

In the meantime, check out StreetFilms‘ work documenting Ciclovia type events in the aforementioned cities. I think you will like what you see.

      Spread the word.

Maybe we’ll put some magic back in this city yet.

    • Internet Activists Pick Up Where Miami Police Left Off in the Case of missing moth...

Lilly Aramburo vanished more than 15 months ago. This is the first article about her published in the independent newspaper, The Miami New Times. The article appropriately titled "Missing Peace" was written by Francisco Alvarado. I must say, he did a pretty thorough job. Much more thorough than Miami Dade Police! (Thanks Frank!!)

He accomplished the seemingly impossible...he tracked down Christen Pacheco and got his side of the story. He interviewed Kelly Starling and a neighbor of Christen's who knew them and happened to talk to Lilly just before she vanished. I can't help but wonder, how many resources did it take? Was it costly? Did it take that much time and trouble?

According to the article, "police inaction is one reason she hasn't been found." Amen to that! Even Christen Pacheco admits he's spoken to a detective only once by phone since the initial report. Kelly Starling says she's tried contacting the detective several times but he's never returned the calls. She says "no one has been trying to do anything. I've been wanting to talk to the detective all this time."

Captain Janna Bollinger-Heller from the Miami Dade County Police domestic crimes bureau was interviewed. She says Lilly's case "has been a high priority." "We have followed up on every lead."

Are you outraged? This could be your child or relative! They believe they have treated Lilly's case with priority? If speaking with the last person to see her alive once by phone is priority, then I'd hate to even think about the cases that have not been a high priority.
If what Captain Bollinger-Heller says is true and there are only 4 detectives in Miami Dade for the 5000 reported cases of missing people, then how on earth are they supposed to be found?

I have a solution. Why don't they classify Lilly's case and others that qualify as homicides? They obviously have more detectives in Homicide. Besides, they have much more training and are better prepared to deal with these kinds of investigations.

Make sure to read all 5 pages! After you read it, let us know what you think. Leave a comment on the New Times Article. Click on the bottom left link that says write your comment.

If you know Lilly or any of the key players involved, including a guy who goes by the name "EJ" - PLEASE COME FORWARD!! This EJ was also there but has since disappeared, unwilling to cooperate. Keep in mind, Lilly has a son who deserves to know the TRUTH.

The singer is off the hook for bizarre 2007 incident
      Sep 12, 2008

A Miami judge yesterday (September 12) dismissed charges against Kelis stemming from a bizarre incident in the Floridian city last year.

The singer was accused of disrupting a police operation at a South Beach nightclub by rushing toward undercover authorities and screaming racial profanities.

Authorities posing as prostitutes had been talking to a group of men when Kelis allegedly rushed at them and said one of the men was her husband Nas.

As a result, she was charged with disorderly conduct and resisting arrest without violence.

However, she is now off the hook as Miami Circuit Judge Antonio Arzola cleared her of the charges and has stopped the case from going any further, reports the Associated Press.

MIAMI -- A 6-year-old boy is recovering after his mother said he became trapped inside a running washing machine, reported local news station WPLG in Miami..

Timothy Clark and his 4-year-old sister were playing in what they apparently thought was a broken machine at a Laundromat off Northwest 79th St. and 22nd Ave.

The boy’s mother, Saraco Black, told Local 10 that her daughter went running to her for help.

“She came to me and said 'Mommy, my brother is inside the washing machine.' When she said that I got up, went over to the machine and my baby was spinning around inside,” Black said.

After three tries, Black was able to pull open the washing machine's door.

The boy was rushed to Ryder Trauma Center. He needed stitches but is expected to be OK.

    • Triple Threat; Hannah, Ike, & Josephine Brewing Up Trouble

MIAMI (CBS4) ― Tropical Storm Hanna continues to blast the Bahamas, Turks and Caicos and Haiti with gusty wind and torrential rain.

At 2 p.m., the center of Hanna was located about 420 miles southeast of Nassau; at latitude 20.6 north, longitude 72.9 west.

Hanna has drifted to the west-southwest for much of Tuesday. The storm is expected to begin moving to the northwest Tuesday night or Wednesday. On this track it will move over the southeastern Bahamas Tuesday evening and central Bahamas on Wednesday.

Hanna grew into a hurricane Monday but was downgraded Tuesday morning.

Maximum sustained winds have decreased to 70 mph with higher gusts. Hanna could regain hurricane strength Wednesday or Thursday.

Hanna's path is uncertain. One forecaster at the National Hurricane Center says "it could hit anywhere from Miami to the Outer Banks of North Carolina."

A hurricane warning remains in effect for the central and southeastern Bahamas and the Turks and Caicos Islands. A tropical storm warning is in effect for the northern coast of Haiti from Le Mole St. Nichoas to the northern border with the Dominican Republic.

Hanna is expected to produce 4 to 8 inches of rain over the southeastern Bahamas, the Turks and Caicos and eastern Cuba; some isolated areas could receive up to 12 inches. Rainfall of 6 to 10 inches is possible over the Dominican Republic and Haiti which could cause life threatening mud slides and flash floods. Swells from Hanna are expected to increase the risk of dangerous rip currents along portions of the Southeast coast over the next couple of days.

NASA has delayed the move of the space shuttle Atlantis from an assembly building at Florida's Kennedy Space Center to the launch pad by at least one day. The move had been scheduled for Tuesday in preparation for an October mission to the Hubble Space Telescope.

TS Ike Strengthens In Central Atlantic

MIAMI (CBS4) ― The ninth named storm of the Atlantic hurricane season, Tropical Storm Ike, has strengthened a little over the central Atlantic.

At 11:00 a.m. the center of Tropical Storm Ike was located about 1,110 miles east of the Leeward Islands, near latitude 18.9 North and longitude 45.0 West. The storm is headed west at 18 mph, with maximum sustained winds near 60 mph with higher gusts. This general motion is expected to continue during the next two days.

Some strengthening is forecast in the next few days. Some models show the storm becoming a hurricane on Wednesday.
      -----------------------------------------------------------

Tropical Storm Josephine Forms Off Africa

MIAMI (CBS4) ― Along with Tropical Storms Hanna and Ike, South Florida now has to keep an eye on Tropical Storm Josephine.

The tenth Tropical Depression of this year's hurricane season has formed into Josephine in the far eastern Atlantic.

At 11 a.m., the center of Josephine was about 120 miles south-southwest of the southernmost Cape Verde Islands; latitude 13.2 north, longitude 25.3 west. The system is moving to the west near 15 mph and is expected to track to the west and northwest over the next several days. On this forecast track the center of TD 10 will remain south of the Cape Verde Islands and pass them Tuesday night.

The system's maximum sustained winds are near 40 mph and some strengthening is expected in the next 24 hours.

The next update on Tropical Storm Josephine will be at 5 p.m.

      Naked protest in California

"We want to walk around topless!"

"What do we want? To walk around topless! When do we want it? Now!" Over 50 women demonstrated for their right to walk around topless in Venice Beach, California, to the delight of male onlookers.

There certainly weren't many men who were arguing with the foxy feminists as they marched down the street armed with posters and bare chests. "We want to show our breasts" shouted the feminists, who were fighting for equal rights with men.

One of the pretty protesters said: "It's not right that men in the USA are allowed to walk around topless, and not women." Women who bare their breasts in public face, according to the state, a hefty fine or even prison. The demonstrators said they just want to be able to go topless on the beach, and sun their breasts at open air swimming pools.

Naked protests also took place in New York, Miami, Denver, Chicago and Hawaii, as part of national GoTopless protest day in the US.

Women will also go topless and demonstrate in Denver, where the four day democratic party conference is taking place.

You can lose a lot of money in a Ponzi scheme. And the international scheme investigators and plaintiffs say was concocted by a graduate of the University of Miami is no exception. Investigators say investors may have been bilked out of more than $30 million.

According to the FBI’s definition, a Ponzi scheme is an investment fraud where the bad guy promises high financial returns that are not available through traditional investments. The scheme generally falls apart when there are not enough new investors to keep the money rolling in. This type of fraud was named after Charles Ponzi of Boston, Mass., who offered his investors a guaranteed 50 percent return on their investment in postal coupons – of course, the scheme fell apart in the end, and the investors lost fortunes.

    • South Florida Man Dies from Police Taser

A South Florida man has died after Police used a Taser on him early Friday morning. Kenneth Oliver was walking the streets of Miami, under the influence, knocking on neighbors' doors pleading for help. What he needed help from is not certain, but the police were called. When arriving on the scene, they had asked Mr. Oliver to put his hands behind his back. Kenneth Oliver had pins in his shoulder, so it was difficult for him to do so. As a result, Miami police tased Mr. Oliver three times. THREE TIMES, as if once isn't enough. Mr. Oliver also suffered from a heart condition. Neighbors witnessed as the man was being tased, with an account from one witness that claimed to have seen the police tase him a fourth time. An "investigation" is still being conducted to determine whether or not a taser was even used.

My personal opinion - It is amazing to me how police in this country get away with so much. We've all seen the abuse of power at least once. What arrogance they have. No offense to any police officers who may read this, as I know your job is a hard one, but come on. There were multiple officers on the scene, and one drunk man. Are you telling me that it is necessar to tase someone 3 or 4 times? I've been around firearms and tasers my whole life, and I know what they are capable of, and 1 time is plenty. It's just a sad world we live in...

    • OxyContin bust nets 56 Miami-Dade government employees

Fifty-six government employees -- including a police officer, a felony court clerk, two corrections officers and 27 school bus drivers and attendants -- were arrested in a scam that used health insurance information to fraudulently obtain prescriptions for the painkiller OxyContin, authorities said Wednesday.

Sixty-two people were arrested in total and all face charges including racketeering, conspiracy to commit racketeering and grand theft, according to the Miami-Dade state attorney's office.

Authorities estimate 130 medically unnecessary prescriptions for OxyContin -- more than 12,000 tablets -- were presented to pharmacies. The drugs have an estimated street value of $400,000, prosecutors said.

OxyContin is a popular painkiller, delivering an instant "high" when it is crushed or dissolved and ingested.

The scam began in January 2003, when six "recruiters" enlisted a group of people, most of them employees of local government, to participate in the ring, according to prosecutors.

Those employees provided their health insurance identification information, and with that information they obtained unnecessary prescriptions for OxyContin from another codefendant, who was a physician, authorities said.

The defendants filled those prescriptions at pharmacies and sold the pills for cash to another codefendant, authorities said.

In addition, prosecutors said, the defendants submitted claims to their insurance companies for reimbursement for the OxyContin prescriptions.

"There can never be an excuse for helping put dangerous drugs onto our streets," said Katherine Fernandez Rundle, Miami-Dade state attorney. "When public employees are a part of the problem and when public medical benefits are used to make the scheme work, these are shameful events. They are also crimes."

Among those arrested, according to authorities, were:

      • 17 Miami-Dade County Public Schools bus drivers

      • 10 Miami-Dade County Public Schools bus attendants

      • Six city of Miami Department of Solid Waste employees

      • Five Miami-Dade County Public Schools security officers

      • Two Miami-Dade County Corrections and Rehabilitation corrections officers

    • 3 million bees swarm a Miami home

A Miami beekeeper said he removed the second largest hive he has encountered in his 20-year career -- about 3 million bees -- from a home.

Beekeeper Adrian Valero said he was called to remove the hive after three people in the area were stung by the bees, which residents of the house said had been around for about a year.

For the past year, the eight people who living in the home knew they had a bee problem, but they never knew how large. They would only notice a few bees at a time when they looked out their window. "When I first came outside I saw like three bees around my face, and then I actually had to come around the back to see a whole thing," said Kevin Harris, a young boy who lives inside the home, in reference to the hive. "Then I got scared."

Valero said it was not surprising that the bees had stung locals.

"These are Italian bees," he said. "They are a little bit aggressive if you bother them too much."

The beekeeper said the hive, which was large enough to produce 60 pounds of honey, was moved to a bee farm far from the neighborhood.
