Nancy is a mother of three fighting to get everyone out the door and get herself into work by 9 AM. Showers, breakfasts, sprained fingers...all in a morning's work for this mom. Making her life harder is the brutal commute from the suburbs into the city of Atlanta due to a poor mass transit system and engineering & maintenance of the roads and highways. A typically 20 minute drive becomes an hour drive in rush hour if everything is perfect on the roads. Experience the congestion, the frustration, and the stagnation that is Atlanta traffic. • Physician charged with stopping his car suddenly in front of two cyclists.

Driver under the influence of non-existent common sense.
      -

Christopher Thomas Thompson, 59, was charged with two felony counts each of reckless driving causing injury and battery with serious bodily injury in connection with a July 4 crash.
Prosecutors allege that on July 4, Thompson slammed on the brakes of his red Infiniti sedan in front of two cyclists riding downhill on Mandeville Canyon Road. Authorities said the impact flung one cyclist through the car's rear window and the other to the pavement.

Peter Swarth, Thompson's attorney, said in a statement about the July crash today: "We regret that charges were filed today against Dr. Thompson. The incident was an unfortunate accident and was absolutely not a case of 'road rage,' as some have suggested. Dr. Thompson continues to wish for the injured cyclists speedy recovery."

Watson said he skidded to the right of the car as the other cyclist skidded to the left, "right into on-coming traffic." The motorist drove right at the other cyclist, who then punched the car, Watson said. "He then drove straight at me."

Cyclist Ron Peterson, 40, whose head crashed through the car window July 4, had broken teeth, a broken nose and serious cuts on his face. The other cyclist, Christian Stoehr, 29, had a shoulder separation he said would require surgery.

Photos showing a car's shattered window and what appears to be blood-covered trunk and others showing an injured Peterson on a gurney and in a UCLA Medical Center bed were quickly posted on Internet blogs, prompting outraged e-mails among members of Westside riding clubs.

Peterson said that Thompson "yelled out some profanity and, 'Ride single-file!' " Peterson said he then screamed an expletive at Thompson, who he said veered in front of the riders and "slammed on his brakes as hard as he could."

Thompson is free on $30,000 bail. He is scheduled to be arraigned Aug. 1 at the airport branch of Los Angeles County Superior Court. If convicted on all counts, he will face up to seven years and eight months in state prison.

    • Take any bike, anywhere, anytime: bike rental made easy in Europe ... USA next?

Subsidized by advertising, racks full of bikes are peppered throughout major cities to make it easy for citizens to get around without having to rely on cars, taxis, buses, trains, motorcycles, etc. Need to go 12 blocks in a direction that public transport doesn't cover easily? Why pay $10.00 for a cab when you can rent a bike for $2.00 and get there in the same amount of time? I saw a number of these stations in Barcelona a few months ago ... really interesting and seemed very straightforward to pick up and drop off. I'd love to see this in Chicago. • In China, no clear victor in bike vs. car match

In China, you can already see some Hummers on the streets of Beijing and Shanghai. But many streets are still cluttered with electric scooters and the good-old people-pedaled two-wheelers.

The Yahoo article accounts for the struggle currently taking place in China's cities as the streets aren't getting any wider but are always getting more and more crowded.

In my view of Beijing, it seems many traffic jams are 1/4 buses, 1/4 cars/taxis, 1/4 bikes/scooters, 1/4 pedestrians getting in the way of everything, ha! In my personal experience, I take the bus, subway, taxi, or walk in pretty even proportions. I've given up the bike though, it's quite perilous and no one wears helmets!

    • A national speed limit of 55 MPH?

An influential Republican senator suggested Thursday that Congress might want to consider reimposing a national speed limit to save gasoline and possibly ease fuel prices.

Sen. John Warner, R-Va., asked Energy Secretary Samuel Bodman to look into what speed limit would provide optimum gasoline efficiency given current technology. He said he wants to know if the administration might support efforts in Congress to require a lower speed limit.

Congress in 1974 set a national 55 mph speed limit because of energy shortages caused by the Arab oil embargo. The speed limit was repealed in 1995 when crude oil dipped to $17 a barrel and gasoline cost $1.10 a gallon.

As motorists headed on trips for this Fourth of July weekend, gasoline averaged $4.10 a gallon nationwide with oil hovering around $145 a barrel.

Warner cited studies that showed the 55 mph speed limit saved 167,000 barrels of oil a day, or 2 percent of the country's highway fuel consumption, while avoiding up to 4,000 traffic deaths a year.

    • ABC News: German Town Does Away With Traffic Lights

      here's how it works:

"With street lights and traffic signs gone, there is only one iron rule in place – you give way to the right, whether it's a car, bike or a pedestrian and the open square does not only look good, it causes motorists to automatically go slow, which means people can make eye contact with each other in order to negotiate the right of way,"

Interesting solution to a worldwide problem. Now, if only the US were nearly as progressive as Europe with regards to urban issues and initiatives, things may improve here as well.

    • Optical illusions to be used as speed bumps

Optical illusions are to be painted onto city streets in the United States in an effort to slow traffic.

The images will appear as 3D barriers to oncoming motorists, although the road is completely flat.

The fake speed humps are being installed at 100 junctions around Philadelphia, Pennsylvania as part of a campaign against aggressive driving.

"The goal is to change the mindset," said Philadelphia’s chief traffic engineer Charles Denny.

"The driver sees this in the roadway, and they think that it’s some protrusion up out of the roadway, and not a perfectly flat surface. So they slow down before they drive over it."

Accident data will be collected by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration to see if the pioneering scheme actually does make the roads safer.

    • Southern California drivers head to Mexico for cheaper gas

Well that's smart isn't, save $5 bucks, peak up your stress in Tijuana, then drive back to the US, idle for 2+ hours in the border crossing and support the monopoly PEMEX is. (Only place to get comsumer gasoline in Mexico)
On top of getting really shitty gas with manipulated gas pumps.
Get over it and ride a bike, San Diego has great weather and mostly flat, plus most people down there look like they could give up some pounds. Thank you in&out...
      -
      just great sense, SoCal-ittes.

SAN DIEGO - Some motorists in southern California are willing to drive south to find lower gas prices. A steady line of cars crossing from Tijuana to the United States.
One motorist said, "Some people just come here to Tijuana now to just fill up with gas and go back to San Diego." The price difference between the U.S. and Mexico is dramatic.
California drivers are paying nearly $4 a gallon for regular gas, in Tijuana it's $2.75.

One motorist said. "Because I always load full in California and it's like 35 dollars. And right here in T-J, it's like 30 dollars, so five dollars difference."

The difference is dramatic with Pemex gas stations everywhere selling regular gas more than a dollar lower than the U.S.
The diesel difference is even more.

    • São Paulo: A City Without Ads

Adbusters Magazine ran this interesting story last fall (Adbusters #73, Sep-Oct 2007) by David Evan Harris, and featured an interview by On The Media’s Bob Garfield with Vinicius Galvao, a reporter for Folha de São Paulo, Brazil’s largest newspaper, about São Paulo’s ban on visual pollution. São Paulo’s “Lei Cidade Limpa” or Clean City Law, which went into effect last year, put an end to commercial advertising and signage around the city, the fourth largest metropolis in the world. The ban extends to all kinds of outdoor signage and has a greater reach than putting an end to billboard campaigns, and has become an unexpected success. • Turning road traffic into electricity?

There is a gent in Oakland, California named Terry Kenney who is determined to turn road traffic into electricity.

'It took him eight years to get a working prototype, but now there's one working at the Port of Oakland which Kenney calls the "Dragon Power Station". Special plates are set on the road, and as big trucks drive over them (about 2,500 of them per day at the port), they compress a tank of hydraulic fluid under the road, which in turn creates a series of pumping actions that turns a generator to produce electricity.
By June, the Dragon should generate about 5,000 to 7,000 kilowatt-hours of electricity each day, or enough to power up to 1,750 homes. Not bad for a prototype.'

Of course one has to recognize the energy is being generated by massive trucks that are simultaneously burning fossil fuels, but this is a step in the right direction. There is an ongoing conversation going- questioning the feasibility of this prototype and some prodding questions regarding the plates and the results Mr. Kenney first made public- join the conversation and submit questions on the link.

Also- if anyone happens to know Mr. Kenney's contact info- slap it down there in the comments section so we can find out more about this worthwhile project.
