    • Memorial to be held for young British 'honour killing' victim

A memorial will be held for Surjit Athwal (1971-1998) on Tuesday 22nd July, to mark the first anniversary of her husband's and mother-in-law's convictions for her murder.

Surjit, a 26-year-old mother of two, was murdered in a so-called 'honour killing' by the Sikh family she married into. Her body was never found, and it took nearly 10 years for her murderers to be brought to justice.

Her mother-in-law and husband were convicted of arranging for her to "disappear off the surface of the earth" after they discovered she was having an affair. The family were said to have been concerned that she cut her hair short, smoked cigarettes and drank alcohol.

Surjit and her mother-in-law, Bachan Athwal, from London, went on a trip to a family wedding in India in December 1998; Surjit Athwal never returned. Prosecutors said her mother-in-law later boasted that she had arranged for her brother to strangle Surjit and throw the body into a river.

Campaigners have questioned why Surjit's case went largely unnoticed in the media.

Do you believe the British Government and its Foreign Office should treat all British citizens equally? Should ethnic minority Britons like Surjit Athwal and Banaz Mahmoud (another woman murdered in a so-called 'honour killing') receive the same level of protection and intervention as white Britons like Lucy Blackman, Kirsty Jones, Ian Stillman, Peter Bleach and Madeleine McCann?

The memorial will be held at Slough Friends Meeting House, 74 Ragstone Road, Slough on Tuesday 22nd July 2008 between 6.30pm and 8.30pm.

    • 2,751st twin towers victim added to the official list

A New York doctor missing since the September 11 terror attacks was restored to the city’s official death toll yesterday after her family endured years of speculation that her disappearance was linked instead to her sex life.

The New York medical examiner’s office declared that Sneha Anne Philip was the 2,751st person killed at the World Trade Centre, reversing an earlier court ruling that her “personal and professional” problems might have led to her disappearance rather than the attack on the twin towers.

Dr Philip, 31, whose remains were never found, had been on the official death toll list before. It was removed in 2004 after a Manhattan judge, citing her problems with alcohol and an erratic personal life, said that there was no definitive proof she was in the vicinity of the World Trade Centre on the morning of September 11, 2001. She was last seen on the night of September 10 on a security camera, shopping for shoes and lingerie opposite the twin towers.

When her name was removed from the list of victims in 2004, her husband and family fought the decision in court. In June 2006, however, a judge ruled against them, after Dr Philip’s court-appointed guardian wrote that she “frequented bars” and “spent the night with strangers”. Her husband said that she would often stay out all night. The ruling fuelled speculation that her private life might have led her to be murdered on the night before the terror attacks.

Her father, Philip K Philip, said that the family would attend this year’s anniversary to hear his daughter’s name read from the list of dead, as it was the first two years. “We waited and everything came out right,” he said. “Sadness is there all the time, but we are happy they recognised Sneha was a victim of 9/11.”

    • Group seeks Bush sewage 'tribute'

A citizens group in San Francisco wants to pay an ironic tribute to President George W Bush when he leaves office - by naming a sewage plant after him.
The group, calling itself the Presidential Memorial Committee of San Francisco, wants the issue voted on at this November's election.
"It's important to remember our leaders in the right historical context," said petition organiser Brian McConnell.
The Republican Party thinks the plan stinks, and it will fight the measure.
Mr McConnell's group has submitted more than 12,000 signatures on a petition to the San Francisco Department of Elections.
If at least 7,168 of those signatures are found to be valid, the question of whether to rename Oceanside Water Pollution Control Plant after the outgoing president will be added to the ballot papers in November.
"In President Bush's case, we think that we will be cleaning up a substantial mess for the next 10 or 20 years," said Mr McConnell.
"The sewage treatment facility's job is to clean up a mess, so we think it's a fitting tribute."

    • Run for the Fallen

This is an amazing memorial to the troops who have lost their lives in Operation: Iraqi Freedom. I hope we can raise awareness about this heartfelt and strongly patriotic event, dedicated to soldiers willing to give their lives for our country.

"ONE MILE FOR EVERY SOLDIER KILLED
      IN OPERATION IRAQI FREEDOM.

Beginning Flag Day, June 14, 2008, a dedicated team of runners will run across America from Fort Irwin, CA to Arlington National Cemetery, one mile for every soldier killed in Operation Iraqi Freedom. For ten weeks, team members will mark each mile with an American flag and signcard in an apolitical reflection of remembrance of each soldier.

...find out how you can run one mile for the fallen."

      -runforthefallen.org

Again, I would like to emphasize that this is not in any way connected to politics. These runners are giving time, energy, blood, sweat, and tears to remember friends, relatives, and every soldier that has died in this war. Please be respectful.

this is the time when all family alike celeberate christmas, but it seems though gifts are given, we tend to look at the wrong meaning of why we have christmas. It is not the gifts, or the trre, but is the very fact that God came to flesh, died for our unworthy souls, and saved us from ourselves. We celeberate to thank our God for the sacrafise of becoming human with every essential part to be human. now, i say to you all let us not forget the true meaning of why we celebrate christmas-God! lets celebrate!! this is the time when all family alike celeberate christmas, but it seems though gifts are given, we tend to look at the wrong meanin... more
