    • F8: Zuckerberg insults underlings, Al Gore and audience at developer conference

The only word to describe Facebook cofounder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg's keynote at the company's second annual F8 developer conference.? Awkward. In this clip, Zuckerberg tries to demonstrate how useful Facebook platform applications are by comparing iLike to MySpace, Zynga to Las Vegas and Causes to — wait for it — Al Gore. Clearly, Zuck's speechwriters meant the whole thing as a kind of joke — the kind they should have known Zuck wouldn't be able to deliver. As usual, Zuck throws his employees under the bus for his inability to speak in public: "Not sure where the team came up with these examples. They're pretty funny." Yes, Mark, we're not cringing at you, we're cringing with you! • Don't drink and drive, then post on Facebook

Two weeks after Joshua Lipton was charged in a drunken driving crash that seriously injured a woman, the 20-year-old college junior attended a Halloween party dressed as a prisoner. Pictures from the party showed him in a black-and-white striped shirt and an orange jumpsuit labeled "Jail Bird."

In the age of the Internet, it might not be hard to guess what happened to those pictures: Someone posted them on the social networking site Facebook. And that offered remarkable evidence for Jay Sullivan, the prosecutor handling Lipton's drunken-driving case.

Sullivan used the pictures to paint Lipton as an unrepentant partier who lived it up while his victim recovered in the hospital. A judge agreed, calling the pictures depraved when sentencing Lipton to two years in prison.

    • When Blogs Go Bad

IT infrastructure security company Sophos, has identified that the number one host for viral nasties on the web is Blogger (Blogspot.com) accounting for 2% of the total malware code on web 2.0.

But Blogger is not the only service being compromised, and malicious code has been uncovered on Facebook and LinkedIn with viruses and trojans hidden behind fake profiles and innocent links.

To protect data theft some companies already curb their employee's access to these and similar sites, permanently blocking the blog. But who is there to oversee and protect the casual home user?

And, why is more not being done by the web host companies to protect the blogging community?

    • MySpace Confirms OpenID Support, Launches Data Availability On Flixster and Eventf...

MySpace is rolling out a couple of announcements this morning a day ahead of Facebook’s F8 developer conference.

The first is confirmation of our story that they are supporting OpenID, although they aren’t releasing any details (It’s our belief that they will first issue OpenID IDs, and possibly become a relying party later).

The company is also announcing the launch of two new Data Availability integrations: Flixster and Eventful (we built what we believe is the first Data Availability app last month).

MySpace is also making a core policy change to Data Availability. Previously third party services were not allowed to store any MySpace user profile information at all - they simply requested it from MySpace, used it to create a web page and then dumped it. Now MySpace is allowing 24-hour caches of profile information, and permanent caches of certain “core elements” of a user profile.

    • German site sued by Facebook

The German company sued by Facebook for running a "knockoff" of the social networking Web site said on Sunday it asked a German court to declare that Facebook's claims are without merit.

Facebook's complaint, filed on Friday in a California federal court, accuses studiVZ of copying the look, feel, features and services of Facebook and seeks "to end StudiVZ's illegal activity" lest Facebook's own reputation be harmed by association.

"As with any counterfeit product, StudiVZ's uncontrolled quality standards for service, features and privacy negatively impact the genuine article," Facebook stated in the complaint.

StudiVZ filed for declaratory judgment at the District Court in Stuttgart, also on Friday.

Facebook's suit also seeks compensatory damages in an amount to be determined at trial.

StudiVZ claims Facebook is suing them only because Facebook has failed to transplant its success in the United States and other countries to the German market.

"Their strategy appears to be: 'If you can't beat them, sue them,"' said Marcus Riecke, chief executive of studiVZ, which is owned by Verlagsgruppe Georg von Holtzbrinck, a German publishing company.

    • Teen dating site gets reported for underwear pics, 9 year olds signing up. And 60 ...

The NSPCC has urged children to stay away from a teen dating website because it fears sex offenders may be online.

The children's charity has reported mylol.net to the Child Exploitation and Online Protection Centre (CEOP). The warning came after the NSPCC found adults - some in their 60s - had registered on the same site which attracts more than 1,000 UK children searching for a "date".

Some of the children registered say they are as young as nine and the NSPCC found pictures of teenagers posing in only their underwear. The charity said it also found evidence of adults asking children for mobile numbers and personal details on the unregulated site which has nearly 1,700 UK users.

    • Nursery nurse has boob job paid for by 100 men she doesn't know

Men! Take part in the surgical enhacement of a lady who's never going to let you touch her! Appealing eh? Well no, you'd think not, but it seems to work on website MyFreeImplants.com which pairs women up with the weirdos who're prepared to fund their boob jobs, seemingly for no reward, other than to be part of creating a race of pneumatic barbie dolls, I guess.

The delightful Daily Mail today reports that Karen Fielding was able to afford the £2,500 breast enlargement operation after members of MyFreeImplants.com donated enough money for her to pay the plastic surgeon's fee.

MyFreeImplants.com allows members to create profiles similar to that of Facebook and Myspace. Women can post pictures of themselves and men can then donate money to their future procedure. While a current photo is required (one for the wank bank, I guess), a post-operation shot is not compulsory.

The homepage of the website encourages its male members with the line: 'Gents...help the girl of your dreams get the body of her dreams. Develop a connection with a girl of your choice and help her earn free breast implants!'

Its message to women reads: 'Ladies...have you ever wanted bigger breasts? But couldn't afford the expensive surgery? Here is your opportunity to earn free breast implants!'

Karen said: "I am feeling pretty good and really pleased with how it turned out. I went for a natural look and that is what I got. I know you can change how you look through exercise and eating well but you can't change your boobs, which is why I had mine done."

Ugh. This is itself is not news. Its just sort of gross. But the idea that women are being 'improved' thanks to the generosity of men who'll pay for their surgery, and who must hope that by paying they'll one day get a piece of the action IS news, and its proper disturbing.

Why do these men pay for women's breast enhancement? Is this a kind of prostitution - a kind of 'you pay for my new-and-improved body and I might let you touch it' situation?

      I wish MyFreeFlatByTheSeaside.com existed. Or MyFreeBroadcastQualityCamera.com perhaps. Or MyFreeExtravagantLifestyle.com...

    • Companies missing the social networking boat

Businesses are passing up on the potential social networking sites, instant messaging, and file sharing offer, research has shown. The use of such innovations in the corporate world could "increase savings, productivity and profits", but many companies are sceptical about reaching out to get involved in the movement.

The survey found strong usage of these resources amongst single people and teenagers, particularly for entertainment and keeping in touch with friends and family.

Whilst I agree that businesses who refuse to harness the social networking sea change risk betraying their Luddite complexions, I'm not sure I'd feel completely comfortable about, for example, being recruited for a new job through Twitter or Facebook. Should social networking and the corporate world overlap?

    • Is Google finally buying Digg?

This year's Sun Valley retreat, put on as usual by investment bank Allen & Co, will be Digg CEO Jay Adelson's second. But it marks Adelson's third or fourth trip around the block trying to sell Digg — with Allen & Co's help, naturally. Most of Digg's prior suitors — IAC, News Corp. and Al Gore's Current TV among them — are regulars at the Idaho resort. Glancing at Dealbook's photo of Adelson and Google cofounder Larry Page, we wonder: After months of lobbying from Google VP Marissa Mayer, has Google's top management finally decided to buy Digg and relieve the New York-based Adelson of his wearisome bicoastal commute? Adelson and Page's all-smiles body language in this photo strongly suggest it's so. • Facebook's gender trouble - trans people excluded

Facebook is asking every user to state their gender as a result of changes to the words available on the site to describe 'oneself'.

No longer will the words 'Jimmy has tagged themself in a photo' be readable anywhere on the time-sapping, rivalry-encouraging, confidence-battering phenomenon that is Facecrack; only 'himself' or 'herself' or nothing at all will be an option to describe your gender.

Picking whether you're male or female, and stating this fact, might seem to be no problem for many people, but for trans people, or those who prefer not to define their gender in narrow terms, Facebook will suddenly be one (more) big exclusion zone.

It's not that there won't be any options for those whose gender doesn't fall strictly within the 'male' or 'female' brackets: those who don't wish to pick M or F are invited to pick nothing at all. And that's the problem - gender is being presented as either male or female or nothing with Facebook's new terminology, and this totally overlooks gender complexity, and the perspectives of trans people for whom gender is most certainly not nothing.

Is this all a storm in a teacup? Do you care about gender disctinctions? Is it reasonable to expect that everyone's point of view is considered on a global social network that seeks to be popular, or should we just get on with what we're given?

    • Playboy asks which female blogger you’d like to see sans clothing

Playboy has published profiles of nine women bloggers (loosely defined) - Xeni Jardin, Violet Blue, Julie Alexandria, Veronica Belmont, Amanda Congdon, Brigitte Dale, Sarah Lacy, Sarah Austin and Natali Del Conte - and asked readers to vote on which one is “sexiest.” The winner will be asked to pose for Playboy.

Sarah Lacy, host of Yahoo’s TechTicker, is described respectfully as a “curvy brunette.” Lacy says that Playboy told her about the poll before it was published but said nothing about their plans to ask the winner to pose nude for the magazine. Lacy says if she wins she won’t accept the offer to go nude.

Natali Del Conte, the host of CNET’s Loaded (and former TechCrunch writer), currently leads voting with 24% of total votes, says she was notified of the poll and gave permission to use her picture. She says if she wins she will “absolutely not pose nude for Playboy,” however. Playboy describes Natali as having a “sunshiney demeanor and girl-next-door good looks.”

I’d like to say contests like these are few and far between, but Wired isn’t much better. In 2007 they asked readers to vote for the sexiest geek of 2007 (not linking to it because the Wired article hotlinked to pictures, one of which has been changed to a goatse).

    • Younger bosses think Facebook is good

The attitude of bosses to Facebook and similar sites is changing, with many now embracing social networks rather than fearing them.
More than one in four managers now embrace the use of MySpace and Facebook as "untapped'' business opportunities, research revealed today.

Younger bosses were heading the cyber charge after initial scepticism about lost work productivity, while older managers were less likely to enlist their staff as Facebook friends, Mx reports.

The survey part of the "Konica Minolta Innovation: Mind The Gap" seminar series found about 33 per cent of managers in their 20s and 30s embraced the networks, compared with just 16 per cent of those over 40. One in three workers said the sites had a place in the office.
