    • Microsoft Files Lawsuit Against Scareware Scammers

Microsoft and Washington State’s Attorney General filed lawsuits in an attempt to protect frightened customers from buying useless software from scam artists.

Such scam artists use what is called "Scareware" to trick computer users into clicking on pop-up alerts that claim their device is "damaged and corrupted".

They are then persuaded to buy software that corrects the non-existent issue by offering fake security fixes.

Attorney General Rob McKenna called it a blatant rip-off of consumers.

Users are "duped into downloading a fake scan (of the computer) and then duped into paying for software they don't need".

The attorney general filed the lawsuit against a Texas firm called Branch Software and Alpha Red and its owner James Reed McCreary IV. The suit alleged that Mr McCreary's company "sent incessant pop-ups resembling system warnings to consumers' personal computers.

"The messages read "CRITICAL ERROR MESSAGE! - REGISTRY DAMAGED AND CORRUPTED."

According to the complaint, the ads "instructed users to visit a web site to download Registry Cleaner XP" at a cost of $39.95 (£21.70).

"We won't tolerate the use of alarmist warnings or deceptive 'free scans' to trick consumers into buying software to fix a problem that doesn't even exist," McKenna said.

"We've repeatedly proven that Internet companies that prey on consumers' anxieties are within our reach."

Eric Sites, the chief technology officer with security firm Sunbelt Software, which tracks spyware and malware threats, says the problem is a growing one.

"In the last six months we have seen an enormous uptick in the number of people getting infected by these scareware or spyware agents.

"They are becoming a lot more prevalent and the 'scare and scam' is all about getting money out of the user," he said.

The scheme took advantage of a Windows operating system feature designed to let computer network administrators send notices to people using the machines.

Microsoft referred the case to the attorney general's high tech unit and helped put the case together.

"Cybercrime continues to evolve, but with public/private collaboration such as this, we can work to champion tougher laws, greater public awareness and, ultimately, stronger protections for online consumers," said Richard Boscovich, senior attorney for Microsoft's Internet safety enforcement team.

The software giant has since filed five new lawsuits and amended two previous complaints all relating to spyware attempts.

Scan & Repair, Antivirus 2009, MalwareCore, WinDefender, XPDefender and WinSpywareProtect were the programs included in the suit.

The defendants are mostly listed as "John Doe" because investigators do not yet know the identities of the people involved.

    • The History of the Computer: First PC's and the Future Computer Timeline

As time marches on, it becomes more and more difficult to recall our world before the invention of the computer. For those who tire over answering an infinite number of daily emails, imagining this world may seem like a pleasant dream. But for the rest of modern society, this is probably not something we'd like to imagine. Whether you are a technophile, or someone who simply requires a computer for your day-to-day activities, you've probably wondered at least once who is responsible for the modern computer. As time marches on, it becomes more and more difficult to recall our world before the invention of the computer. For those who tire ov... more

    • Tutto in fretta. Tutto in rete, tutto virtuale. Anche il sesso.

      di Cristina Turano (Strill.it)
I colpi li perdono tutti. Sembra esistere un processo inverso all’immissione dell’innovazione.
Fanno i cattivi e ci provano gusto.

    • Designers developing virtual-reality 'Cocoon'

You're walking along a street in Roman Pompeii at the start of the first millennium when you notice a spectacular stone building. You reach out towards it and your guide informs you it's a temple to the god Jupiter, built in 200 BC. With a flick of your wrist you save the data and, school assignment complete, you step out of your Cocoon and back into your living room.

Educational historical journeys are just one possible use of the Immersive Cocoon, a walk-in virtual-reality pod being developed by NAU, an international design collective that aims to revolutionize the way we interact with computers.

When complete, the Immersive Cocoon will be a sleek and shiny human-sized dome. Step inside and you'll be enveloped by a 360° display screen and full surround sound.

When the software boots up, instead of using a joystick or mouse to navigate the screens, motion-tracking cameras will follow the movement of your arms, legs and face, and a motion-sensitive platform will detect if you're walking or jumping.

"You've got display, sound and interaction all combined to create this fully immersed digital experience," explains Tino Schaedler, the architect-turned-film designer who is one third of NAU.

"It is completely different from me sitting in front of a screen, looking at a little picture and typing something in -- almost like the experience is reduced to my brain and my fingers. In the Cocoon we have the whole body immersed inside."

Videogame players will immediately recognize the Cocoon's gaming potential. The motion-tracking cameras and wrap-around visuals could make for an incredibly realistic gaming experience, where you use your whole body to fight off enemies who approach from all directions. But the Cocoon's potential extends far beyond gaming.

Imagine having a Cocoon in your home, connected to the Internet. Its unique interface means that rather than inputing commands with a keyboard or a moving a cursor with a mouse, you can simply reach out and 'grab' information from all around you.

If that sounds like science fiction, it may be because the 3D motion-tracking system was originally developed by John Underkoffler, whose work at Massachusetts Institute of Technology inspired similar 'reach out and grab' technology in the sci-fi movie "Minority Report."

    • Google to launch a computer navy

Forget the Royal Navy and the U.S. Marines -- the 'computer navy' is on its way, and digital media on the high seas are set to make a steaming comeback.
It seemed that floating media firms were a thing of the past when the United Kingdom's last major offshore pirate radio station, Radio Caroline, followed other European and American examples and died out in the early 1990s.

But, fast-forward 20 years and enter Internet giant Google.

According to a patent application seen by London newspaper "The Times," Google is considering launching barges up to seven miles (11km) offshore to host the massive data centers required to run its Internet search engines.

The plan would likely see the data centers -- which consist of huge supercomputers -- use wave energy to power and cool themselves while stationed at sea.

In the application Google states: "Computing centers are located on a ship or ships, anchored in a water body from which energy from natural motion of the water may be captured, and turned into electricity and/or pumping power for cooling pumps to carry heat away."

Energy consumption is undoubtedly a massive issue for these giant data centers.
According to a 2005 study by Stanford University consulting professor and Lawrence Berkeley National Labs staff scientist, Jonathan Koomey, the energy consumption of data centers doubled in the period from 2000 to 2005.

The total annual worldwide power bill for the servers at the time was an estimated $7.2 billion, according to Koomey.

The Internet has continued to grow at a rapid rate and other major companies have also been searching for a more efficient method of maintaining their data centers.

    • The future of gaming is all in the mind

Be excited, but be scared. A world of mind-blowing possibilities is suddenly being thrust upon the world of video gaming.
The era of thought controlled games has arrived, and soon you could be required only to 'think' to operate a video game. Maybe you'll even have the chance to be completely immersed in a video game 'world'.

The Emotiv EPOC headset - the first Brain Computer Interface (BCI) device for the gaming market is the technology behind the revolution -- and the company claims to have already mastered thought control.

The EPOC detects and processes real time brain activity patterns (small voltage changes in the brain caused by the firing of neurons) using a device that measures electric activity in the brain.

In total, it picks up over 30 different expressions, emotions and actions.
