Newspaper group bans ads for 'adult services' to tackle sex trafficking
One of the largest newspaper publishers in the UK has banned advertisements for "adult services" from its titles - almost 300 publications, including 17 dailies and websites.
Newsquest South London has "taken a decision no longer to publish adult services advertisements, either in print or on its websites. Increasing concerns regarding the appalling issue of human trafficking have been significant in this decision, which is effective immediately."
Newsquest's head office would not elaborate on the decision or the possible impact on advertising revenue, but campaign groups have welcomed the move. Members of the Croydon Community Against Trafficking posed as punters answering ads. In a Society Guardian report last year, it revealed that 84% of women being sold for sex were from overseas, most of them trafficked.
About time or an overreaction? Whose responsibility is it to police how and where adult companies can advertise their services? What impact will this have on the company's revenues? Does anyone actually buy newspapers or magazines *just* for the sex ads? Will other publishers be persuaded to follow suit? And what real impact will this have on tackling sex trafficking?

Daily Mail sinks to new low: checking out children on the beach
The Daily Mail today reports that "sweet" Sweet Georgia May Jagger, daughter of musician Mick Jagger and model Jerry Hall, "has inherited her father's famous lips and her model mother's stunning figure as she stepped out in a bikini while holidaying in France."
Er, Daily Mail, you're pointing that telephoto lens at a child on a beach. Wrong much?
Almost as gross as Radio 1 DJ Chris Moyles counting down the days to Charlotte Church's 16th birthday when she'd be legal and he could 'take her virginity' http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/entertainment/tv_and_radio/2...
What is it about girls suddenly reaching the age of consent that has the tabloids slavering over their still-unformed bodies?

Mother sues newspapers over Bebo defamation
A mother is suing six national newspapers for defamation and breach of privacy after they ran stories and photos taken from Bebo about a 'drunken party' that turned out to be false, reports the Independent.
On her Bebo page, Jodie Hudson described a riot of sex and wanton damage fuelled by under-age drinking that only ended when the police arrived. Newspapers leapt on the story and published photos from her Bebo site alongside their reports.
But Hudson's lurid description of the party, subsequently carried in a number of national newspapers, turned out to be fantasy. The media stories, and the accompanying pictures taken from Bebo, are now the subject of a landmark legal case that could redraw the boundaries of the use of information published on social networking sites including Bebo, Facebook and MySpace.
Should newspapers be able to access and - if deemed newsworthy enough - publish your photos and writings from social networking sites, without your permission? Surely its a journalist's reponsbility to corroborate stories like this *before* they publish them?

Credit crunch hits dominatrixes too
The News of The World paid a dominatrix only half of the £25,000 they offered her to make a secret film of Max Mosley's sex session because of the credit crunch, the Times reports.
So it seems that sex still sells... just for a little less than before.
Has the so-called credit crunch affected your pocket yet? Or your career in the sex industry perhaps?

Daily Mail left red-faced after laptop security blunder
Everyone's favourite neo-fascist tabloid rag, The Daily Mail, was left red-faced today after it emerged that a laptop containing the financial information of thousands of members of staff was stolen.
This ineptitude comes only months after the newspaper lead with a serious of inflammatory front-page headlines attacking the government for 'mind-blowing incompetence' following a similar data-loss incident.
The Mail's publishers Associated Newspapers issued a statement saying that the loss was due to a 'technical issue'. Everyone's favourite neo-fascist tabloid rag, The Daily Mail, was left red-faced today after it emerged that a laptop containing the f... more -
Save the Internet
"The internet has was designed to be an open platform where anyone can create a website and any information can pass through a connection. If big business starts to be selective about what can pass through it will be like when the FCC cracked down on early radio expression and it wasn't long before only commercial radio existed.

Your local news by way of the Philippines / India
The Tampa Tribune, with the blessing of it's corporate owners -- Media General, has outsourced it's advertising work to a firm in New Delhi, India. This is long after they outsourced subscription services to a call center in the Philippines.
This is not an uncommon issue with your local newspapers either. Though the story linked to focuses on the Tampa Tribune situation, it can be found that more and more newspapers are doing this. It may be accepted that more local media is owned by out-of-city/state corporations with no local ties... But outsourcing local operations for a newspaper? The further disconnect to the region of service is another reason why newsprint is failing financially. Venerable American newspapers face extinction
The New York Times once epitomised all that was great about American newspapers; now it symbolises its industry’s deep malaise. The Grey Lady’s circulation is tumbling, down another 3.9% in the latest data from America’s Audit Bureau of Circulations (ABC). Its advertising revenues are down, too (12.5% lower in March than a year earlier), as is the share price of its owner, the New York Times Company, up from its January low but still over 20% below what it was last July. On Tuesday April 29th Standard & Poor’s cut the firm’s debt rating to one notch above junk.
At the company’s annual meeting a week earlier, its embattled publisher, Arthur “Pinch” Sulzberger, attempted to quash rumours that his family is preparing to jettison the firm it has owned since 1896. Carnage is expected soon as dozens of what were once the safest jobs in journalism are axed, since too few of the staff have accepted a generous offer of voluntary redundancy.

Stop Killing Children: Newspaper Launches Citywide Campaign
The Chicago Sun-Times featured a front cover with all backwards lettering and an image of a caucasian group of residents with their backs turned to the camera, in what they call a start of a campaign to stop the killing of children in inner city Chicago. This came after a weekend in which 26 shooting incidences resulted in 9 deaths and dozens of injuries. As with everything else, this should have started earlier because children have been killing each other worldwide for the past 55 years, but other American newspapers should follow the lead of the Sun-Times and the Baltimore Sun.
