Shoot 'Em Up poster banned for glamorising gun violence
The Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) has banned a poster for the film Shoot 'Em Up after agreeing that Clive Owen's expression in the poster "suggested a direct aggression that could be seen to glamorise the use of guns and violence".
The poster - which showed the actor with guns in both hands pointed towards the viewer - was found to be in breach of advertising rules relating to social responsibility and violence.
A second poster showing the actor Paul Giamatti holding a gun also broke the same advertising rules.
The ASA told Entertainment Film Distributors Ltd that the two posters should not be shown again.
It received 55 complaints about the set of posters, but it rejected objections to the third one which showed Owen holding a gun by his side.
Eight of the complaints said the campaign would be directly offensive to the families of Rhys Jones, the 11-year-old shot dead in Liverpool, and 15-year-old Jessie James who was shot dead in Manchester.
Also among the complainants was a member of the Kensal Green Community Safety Forum in London an area which has seen a spate of shootings.
Entertainment Film Distributors Ltd disagreed that the posters glamorised gun violence. It said it had sent out all the advertising work to poster site contractors and had been in close contact with local councils, which "usually provided a safe guideline" as to whether campaigns would be acceptable.
The ASA noted the irony of some of the ad straplines used such as "just another family man making a living" - as well as the fact that the guns were not pointing directly at viewers.
So... what does everyone think? Was the ASA right to ban this poster? Should film posters be censored? Or is this poster harmless fun and we are just giving in to an oversensitive and hysterical minority? Hollywood Produces Pollution
Not just some bad movies, but actual environmental damage. Ever think about the amount of energy it takes to run all those big-budget productions?
"A study into the environmental impact of film-making in Hollywood, conducted by the University of California, showed that, in the Los Angeles region, it made a larger contribution, in relation to its size, to air pollution than most major industries, including aerospace manufacturing, clothing, and the hotel industry. Only fuel refining belched more emissions."
I think the industry should take some initiative on this one... stop making huge action films about the planet's demise and start doing their part to prevent it. American Gangster-A Must See
I saw American Gangster with Denzel Washington and Russell Crowe yesterday, and recommend it. It is a factual and real depiction of the life of Frank Lucas, the drug kingpin who started out as the driver for Harlem mob boss Bumpy Johnson (Clarence Williams III,) and his ascension to millionaire due to selling heroin straight from the Golden Triangle in Thailand during the VIetnam War which he had delivered in the coffins of dead soldiers, and the inner workings of his own organization that bypassed even the mob. It also depicts the life of Richie Roberts, the cop from NJ who finally brings him down and then works with him to expose foreign nationals and cops on the take dealing confiscated drugs. It was real to me, because I lived through the seventies and felt like I was back again watching this film, and yes, the music is good too. I would say if Denzel Washington is not given a nod for an Oscar nomination as well as Russell Crowe, it would be a crime (pardon the pun.)
