Couple get married for less than £500
The credit crunch is closing in, and already there seems to be fringe adaptations to the tightening of the belt. Odette Fenwick, 19, and 21-year-old Chris May got married this week, and their special day set them back just £480.
"The price tag does not matter, it is the meaning of the day which is important,"
The wedding dress was bought on eBay for £52, and the groom hired a suit for £90, the wedding reception for the couple and 20 guests was held at an engineering plant in Barnstaple, where the groom works.
Is this a trend that you can see catching on? The credit crunch is closing in, and already there seems to be fringe adaptations to the tightening of the belt. Odette Fenwick, 19, a... more -

Peaches Geldof weds in Las Vegas
Peaches Geldof, daughter of Bob Geldof, has married her American boyfriend in a Las Vegas ceremony.
The 19-year-old's publicist issued a statement saying the TV presenter and DJ had wed singer Max Drummey, 23, of indie band Chester French, last week. Geldof, whose mother was the late Paula Yates, said the marriage had the "full support of their family". The relationship is reported to have developed in July when Drummey played at a festival Geldof presented. However, the pair said they first met two years ago.
Geldof married Drummey, a Harvard anthropology graduate, in a low-key ceremony in Las Vegas while they were on holiday in the US. Chester French played at the ITV iTunes festival in London this summer, which Geldof co-presented. "Peaches and Max did not want unnecessary publicity, but following growing media speculation, have decided to set out the facts," a statement issued by Geldof's publicist said.
It added that Geldof's father had been told of the wedding shortly before it took place and had given the union his blessing despite not being able to walk his daughter down the aisle. Peaches Geldof, daughter of Bob Geldof, has married her American boyfriend in a Las Vegas ceremony. ... more -

Lesbian wedding ad 'disturbs' readers
The marriage announcement of a lesbian couple published in a US newspaper in Utah has apparently hit some nerves.
Since the newspaper published the wedding ad announcing the upcoming union of Kresta Spencer and Carrie Taylor, it has received two letters to the editor (one for and one against), 10 e-mails, several phone calls and four subscription cancellations over publication of the announcement.
Narayne Rougeau, a North Logan resident, complained: "Same-sex marriages are not recognized by the State of Utah and cannot be performed here. I would also suggest that you change the name of the section of the paper to 'weddings, engagements and live-ins or other relationships' since you obviously seem content to publish out-of-wedlock living arrangements as actual marriages."
Neither Spencer nor Taylor could be reached for comment, however, in one of the online responses to Rougeau's letter, Spencer said the couple was forced to use the paper's wedding form because that's the only one available: "The announcement we sent to our friends and family did not include the words 'marriage' or 'commitment ceremony.' We were very specific and said please join us in a 'celebration of our love.'" Botox for bridesmaids: wedding guests given cosmetic surgery for photo perfection
The New York Times reports on growing numbers of brides who are showering their bridesmaids, family members and guests with cosmetic surgery and invasive beauty treatments, in order to make everything literally perfect for their big day.
Justifying her 'gift' of chemical peels, wrinkle-filler injections, laser treatments and tooth whitening to her bridesmaids, one nutbar bride said, “As you get older, everyone is more conscientious about their skin and appearance. Giving them something for themselves — as opposed to something that they’ll never wear again — is more meaningful.”
There is that. OR, you could appreciate how gorgeous your loved ones are *without* any surgical enhacement and not freak out that your pictures will pop up on Facebook after the wedding, so you don't actually have to show the world how perfect you (and your friends and relatives) have become. That spiteful girl from Year 3 probably doesn't think about you much any more anyway, so your Photo Bucket of Hollywood-style wedding pics that screams 'I've made it! Me and my perfect teeth have made it!' probably won't impress her that much.
What do you think? Have bridezillas taken it a step too far, or is the pursuit of perfection on a wedding day completely justified, however long your aunt Dora has to spend in the spa or under the knife to make her presentable? Just how far will we go in pursuit of prettiness? The New York Times reports on growing numbers of brides who are showering their bridesmaids, family members and guests with cosmetic s... more -
Planning an Earth-friendly wedding
Green gowns
Beth Daruszka of Bridal Chateau in Williamsville keeps an eye on trends in the wedding industry. Bridal gowns of hemp or ahimsa silk (harvested without harming silkworms and available by the yard at www.organicavenue.com ) may be environmentally correct, she said, but they exceed the price that many local brides-to-be are willing to spend. “We carry gowns that cost up to $1,500,” said Daruszka of her family-operated bridal shop. “Many of the organic gowns (by eco-couture designers including Adele Wechsler and Deborah Lindquist) cost double that.”
One alternative is to go vintage.
“It’s still relatively rare to find an off-the-rack ‘green’ wedding dress,” said Richmond, of Natural Health. “Go vintage and have it tailored. Ask family members if they have a dress you can tailor to suit your style, or visit a consignment shop, where you can find discount designer gowns.
“Eco-friendly fabrics — like hemp and linen — are grown in a sustainable way,” Richmond noted. “They are grown without the amount of pesticides used with conventional cotton. Raw silk can be sustainable.” Green gowns ... more -

Green bride and groom go by Tube
An environmentally-friendly couple in London have had a green wedding by travelling to their ceremony by Tube.
Stefanie Schmiedel, Robert Gray and their wedding guests went from Dollis Hill underground station in north-west London to Marylebone register office.
"We thought about going on our bikes but this was a compromise," he said.
Her dress was made from reusable material, her engagement ring was second-hand and the menus and order of service were printed on recycled paper.
To ensure the event was as environmentally-friendly as possible, catering at their reception used local produce and the wedding cake was organic.
Ms Schmiedel said: "If in everyday life we try to be as environmentally friendly as we can, why should we change on our wedding day?"
Mr Gray added: "We didn't feel that we needed a stretch limo to get to their register office when we have got an Oyster card and the Tube."

Israeli weddings introduce ATMs
A new device at one Israeli wedding hall gives new meaning to the Hebrew expression 'Mazel Tov', meaning 'good fortune'.
Guests can now insert a credit card into a machine at the entrance of the Gan Oranim wedding hall, tap in a sum and leave a gift for the bride and groom.
'It's new in Israel and the world,' said the hall's Aya Alon Kaufman. 'It's very convenient... guests can give a gift even if they forget their chequebooks.'
She said couples pay 500 shekels (€95) to rent the ATM-like device and the recorded funds are transferred into their bank account the next day.
The machine prints out a 'deposit' slip with the guest's name, which can be put into an envelope along with a congratulatory note and inserted into a slot in the device for the couple to retrieve.
Rather than bring boxed gifts, guests at Israeli weddings usually leave cash or cheques in envelopes they slip into a safe placed at the reception hall's door. A new device at one Israeli wedding hall gives new meaning to the Hebrew expression 'Mazel Tov', meaning 'good fortune&... more -

Bum wedding: Bride sues designer after wedding dress unravels at altar
An Italian woman is suing the designer of her wedding dress for "moral and financial damages" after the garment unravelled in church, exposing her bottom to the guests.
It was meant to be the happiest day of her life. But for one Italian bride her dream wedding turned into a nightmare when her designer dress came apart at the altar, exposing her backside to the entire congregation.
The unfortunate woman is now suing the designer of the dress, British newspaper The Daily Telegraph reported. Despite the embarrassing wardrobe malfunction, the bride soldiered on, the paper said, but could not have proper photographs taken of the ceremony as she was half-naked.
"This was supposed to be the biggest day of my client's life but it turned out to be the worst, her wedding was ruined," the woman's lawyer, Alberto Figone, said. "She was left extremely embarrassed because the stitching of her dress came apart at the altar, slid down and revealed her bottom to the whole congregation."
The 30-year-old woman, who cannot be named because of Italian privacy laws, claims the €2,514 ($3,953) dress came apart because of poor stitching. She is now suing the designer of the dress, a shop in the town of Rapallo, for €23,000 ($36,167).
Although the woman got married in 2006, the case has only now come to court. Her lawyer Figone said his client was suing the dress maker "for moral damages as well as financial damages."
Unfortunately, the woman's bad luck didn't end there: She has since separated from her husband. An Italian woman is suing the designer of her wedding dress for "moral and financial damages" after the garment unravelled i... more -
