Ben Hoffman heads over to Six Flags to check out a sneak peek of "Nintendo's Wario Land: Shake it!" and witnesses an epic battle for the title of "Wario Land Champion."

The infoMania Tech Report is a weekly segment where technology guru Ben Hoffman takes a look at the newest tech products, gadgets and video games. It has been called “the funniest tech show on the web.” (No source for that quote is available at this time. In fact, there’s a good chance it was made up.)

infoMania is a half-hour satirical news show that airs on Current TV. The show puts a comedic spin on the 24-hour chaos and information overload brought about by the constant bombardment of the media. Hosted by Conor Knighton and co-starring Brett Erlich, Sarah Haskins, Ben Hoffman, and Sergio Cilli, the show airs on Thursdays at 10 pm Eastern and Pacific Times and can be found online at current.com/infomania.

    • New superhappyfun service: Play Wii Fit with a Japanese Maid for $25

Well it seems Japanese girls dressed as French maids are still all the rage in Japan, and now you can even play Wii Fit with one - you know, the game with the balance board that requires all that leaning back and forth..

The owner of the Akihabara's Refresh Club, which provides the, err, service, says that, "playing Wii Fit by yourself is lonely. But here, playing along with a maid makes exercising enjoyable."

Well it's certainly one of the more nerdy fetishes I've come across in a while...

    • Nintendo's Brain Training game boosts maths scores

Learning and Teaching Scotland - the main organisation for the development of the curriculum - analysed the effect of a "brain training" game.

The study involved more than 600 pupils in 32 schools across Scotland using the Brain Training from Dr Kawashima game on the Nintendo DS every day. The project followed a pilot study in Dundee last year.

LTS worked with Her Majesty's Inspectorate of Education and the University of Dundee to see if the pilot results were replicated on a wider scale.

A group of pupils played the game, which included reading tests, problem-solving exercises and memory puzzles, for 20 minutes at the start of their class for nine weeks. A control group continued their lessons in a more traditional manner.

The pupils were tested at the beginning and then the end of the study.

Researchers found that while all groups had improved their scores, the group using the game had improved by a further 50%.

The time taken to complete the tests also dropped by five minutes, from 18.5 minutes to 13.5 minutes. The improvement in the games group was double that of the control group.

Less able children were found to be more likely to improve than the highest attainers and almost all pupils had an increased perception of their own ability.

The study also found that it made no difference if the children had the game at home and noted no difference in ability between girls or boys.

It found improvements in absence and lateness in some classes.

Derek Robertson, LTS's national adviser for emerging technologies and learning, said: "Computer games help flatten out the hierarchy that exists in schools - they are in the domain of the learner as opposed to the domain of the school."

    • Nintendo DS' GTA: Chinatown Wars will feature drug-dealing minigame

Not only can you have 'sexy-time' with hookers, blow up buildings and hijack cars, but you now have to sell as much heroin, cocaine, weed, ecstasy, acid and downers to 'punters' as possible in the upcoming DS version of GTA.

According to reports, shifting the 'gear' will give you cash to spend in the game and 'up your experience of market conditions.'

The Rockstar VP Dan Houser told Edge magazine, "We wanted to have a drug-dealing mini-game in lots of the GTA games...We played with it a little in Vice City Stories, because it worked really well juxtaposed with the main story."

"It works well with what GTA is, with driving around the map, and it gives you another thing to think about - another layer or piece of the puzzle to keep you motivated... It does intersect with the main story and things you learn from it work with the story, but it mostly runs on its own."

Ha! to all those thinking they were gonna tone it down for the DS....

    • Nintendo Wii patent infringement

"The U.S. International Trade Commission has agreed to look into Hillcrest Laboratories' allegations that Nintendo infringed Hillcrest's patents in making its popular Wii video game, the ITC said on Wednesday.

Hillcrest has accused Nintendo of infringing four patents to make the top-selling Wii game console. Hillcrest made the filing to the ITC, which has the power to bar products such as the Wii from the United States if they are made with infringed technology.

Nintendo said that it respected the patents of other companies, and did not infringe on Hillcrest's intellectual property. "Nintendo intends to vigorously defend this action," it said in a statement.

      Hillcrest had no immediate comment."

    • Nintendo’s ‘worst’ console wins some new admirers

When Nintendo’s experiment with virtual reality – the Virtual Boy video game system – proved a commercial failure, the Japanese manufacturer’s critics were hardly shocked.

Thirteen years after its inauspicious debut, however, the system is suddenly attracting shoppers in the UAE.

Video game retailers emptying a warehouse in the Rashidia area of Dubai last month discovered a long-lost shipment of 100 units, which collectors believe to be the last of their kind still sealed in original factory boxes.

“This product was just left years ago and nobody knew it was in stock,” said Vijay Chandrabota, the purchasing manager for Geekay Games in Dubai. “For me, it was dead stock. I didn’t even know that this Virtual Boy existed until we found it.”

Electronic games enthusiasts such as Mohammed Omran snatched up two consoles. Like others, he had believed brand new models were impossible to locate because the system was discontinued in the 1990s; unexpectedly available, he calculated, they could be worth many times their face value.

“I was chasing it in all the shops and all the markets in Dubai Khour, but everything was always vanished,” said Mr Omran, a 38-year-old electrical engineer from Sharjah. “It’s not an easy system to find.”

Considered one of the rarest and most ill-conceived pieces of game hardware ever, the Virtual Boy was launched in 1995 but quietly shelved a year later amid reports of migraines and dizziness, apparently caused by excessive use.

Nintendo moved only 770,000 units during the machine’s brief lifetime, falling far short of projected sales of three million. When the company scrapped plans to release the product outside Japan and North America, consoles in mint condition became scarce.

Nintoaster, the latest D.I.Y rendition of the machine that had us all blowing our brains out, was constructed using a simple pop-up toaster.

An industrious engineer named Richard DaLuz (who previously created an all-in-one system with Atari 2600, NES, SNES and Genesis) recently gutted a toaster, inserted an old Nintendo’s parts (controllers, AC adaptor), orange LED lights (for the cooking effect) and made it into a fully functional system.

Watch a video of him recreating the process below.

    • New nano-chromatic iPods and improvements for the rest

Today in San Francisco, reporters and analysts gathered at Apple's "Let's Rock" event eager to hear Steve Jobs talk about the improvements to his line of iPods.

For starters today Apple is releasing a new version of iTunes. The new iTunes will have a few new features including grid browsing and the Genius function. Genius is an all new way to automatically create play lists from your library based on songs that go well together. This works with music and movies. iTunes will upload a list of your music and movies to the internet to be added to a database. This database will gather and compare information from all Genius users to develop a smart play list. The more people using Genius the smarter it will be. Kind of takes the fun out of the mix tape, but still a really cool feature. The new iTunes can be downloaded for free.

The classic iPod is being upgraded to a thinner 120GB ($249) version and the 160GB is being discontinued.

Next was the big announcement. New second gen nano iPods. The new nano's will sport a whole new look. The nano is going back to a more vertical design like the long forgotten iPod mini. Much like the macbook air they have a new curved aluminum design with a curved glass cover for the screen. This new design will make it the thinnest iPod ever. Apple has taken the accelerometer from the touch and iPhone and it does some great things. The nano now has cover flow so you can browse your music by album cover. One of the coolest things about cover flow on the nano is you to simply shake your nano to scroll through. The integration of the accelerometer also means a larger display for watching video. Some of the other nano improvements include use of Genius play list building without iTunes, built in mic, 24 hour battery life (music playback), environmentally friendly (toxics free), and they come in a wide variety of colors. My favorite is the silver with black click wheel. The new nanos will come in 8GB ($149) and 16GB ($199) models.

The rest of the updates were nowhere near as exciting. Steve announced a new set of ear buds that have both a woofer and tweeter, on cable controls, and a built in mic. You can get a pair of these for the steep price of $79.

The iPod touch also saw a few cool updates. The new touch will be thinner even though they are cramming in more features. Taking up space on the inside of the new touch is a built-in speaker, Nike + and volume controls on the side. Steve also showed a tv spot which basically promotes the touch as a hand held gaming device. With about 700 games on the App Store, Steve boasts that the touch is the "best portable device for playing games." Look out Nintendo... Some of the highlighted games are Need for Speed, Real Soccer 2009, and they even managed to get a version of the new hit game Spore for the iPod touch. The touch screen D-pad and A/B buttons that some of the games has as well as motion senor controlling makes the touch a pretty diverse gaming device. The new iPod touch will come in 8GB ($229), 16GB ($299), and a 32GB ($399) models.

The last updates of the event came for the iPhone. No new hardware, but there is a 2.1 firmware update that fixes a lot of bugs. "Fewer dropped calls, big battery life improvements. No crashes with Apps. Backing up is faster." This update is free for all iPhone owners.

With the whole arsenal of iPods improved, its time to start your Christmas shopping. Oh and F.Y.I. Jobs also mentioned that 90% of US cars offer iPod integration. So if your in the market for a new mp3 player and a new car, you can truly combine them.

Nintendo are certainly no strangers to seeing their consoles reinvented and fashioned into musical instruments,, from the SNES version of Mario Paint (which featured a composer function) to 'blipcore' made from sampling converted Game Boys.

So, they've obviously put two and two together, and have announced the company has linked with Korg, purveyors of electronic synths and general production lovliness, to create the DS-10 Synthesizer. A beat-making

Check what the UK press release had to say:
"As you compose, work your way around the synthesizer using the replication of the original KORG MS-10 interface spread across the duel screens of the Nintendo DS. Create the sound of your choice using the Touch Screen: through switching interruptors; modifying drumbeats by drawing marks; or editing the synthesizer tone colour by tweaking knobs and connecting patch cables between the jacks on the Synthesizer Patch Panel, With the ability to save up to 18 different sessions, continue to develop and build electro tunes over time and even connect to fellow musicians' consoles through the wireless connection function to work on a project together."

I'm tempted to get a DS just so I can make tunes on my way to work.

Ok, I have to admit to not being a great Starwars fan, though to me this sounds like it could be kinda cool, given what I've read of Wii MotionPlus' capabilities.

Rumours abound that there are plans to make another lightsaber game using Wii MotionPlus's proper controls. If true, this’ll be the third Star Wars title for the Wii in recent times, along with The Force Unleashed.
