Mysterious Noise haunts Couple
"Bob and Leona Ehrfurth say the noise that's been plaguing them for two years sounds something like a rumbling motor, with a subtle vibration that won't quit. Then it stops - especially when they try to show city officials or acoustic experts what they're hearing.
When they leave, the don't hear the noise, he said, so they know it's not some health problem the two share.
City officials hired a company for $1,000 worth of testing in the house this spring, but the tester came up with no noise and no significant vibration.
"Yeah, I've experienced it," Nicholson said. "It's like an engine thing, a low-frequency vibration. I think it would be an annoyance."
He had hoped the testing equipment could be used inside one of the factories in the area, but Municipal Judge Jerry Hanson wouldn't sign the inspection warrant because there was no reasonable suspicion of a violation."

Mob Excess Deterrent Using Silent Audio?
According to the New Scientist, the U.S. military has developed a non-lethal microwave weapon that creates sound inside your head.
The device – dubbed MEDUSA (Mob Excess Deterrent Using Silent Audio) – uses microwaves which interact with your ears and creates irritating noises. Such auditory effects could cause "discomfort or even incapacitation" but are heard by the recipient only.
MEDUSA is aimed for military or crowd-control applications but it is still not clear whether its employment may cause substantial neural damage.

Bringing down the volume of loud commercials
"Ever get sick of those commercials that seem to be a lot louder than the show you're watching?
Sen. Roger Wicker (R-Miss) sympathizes with you.
The senator yesterday introduced legislation that would require the Federal Communications Commission to bar commercials from being broadcast at louder volumes than the program material they accompany. It's called the Commercial Advertisement Loudness Mitigation Act, or CALM Act.
"Excessively loud television commercials are annoying and drive families away from quality programming," Wicker said in a news release. "This bill is a common sense approach to a problem that plagues individuals across the nation and will create a more enjoyable television experience. As a member of the Commerce Committee, I look forward to working with my colleagues to make this legislation a reality."
The bill has companion legislation introduced in the House by Rep. Anna Eschoo (D-CA).
Should this issue be a top priority for Congress and the FCC?"

Experts unveil 'cloak of silence'
Being woken in the dead of night by noisy neighbours blasting out music could soon be a thing of the past.
Scientists have shown off the blueprint for an "acoustic cloak", which could make objects impervious to sound waves.
The technology, outlined in the New Journal of Physics, could be used to build sound-proof homes, advanced concert halls or stealth warships.
Scientists have previously demonstrated devices that cloak objects from microwaves, making them "invisible".
"The mathematics behind cloaking has been known for several years," said Professor John Pendry of Imperial College London, UK, an expert in cloaking.
"What hasn't been available for sound is the sort of materials you need to build a cloak out of." Being woken in the dead of night by noisy neighbours blasting out music could soon be a thing of the past. ... more -

Ocean noise from oil works is killing marine wildlfe
Imagine being bombarded by a sound so loud that it overwhelms all of your senses, blinding you to the world around you; an excruciatingly painful experience from which you can’t escape.
That is exactly what happens to marine animals that are subject to the thundering roar of drilling for oil, naval sonar, seismic surveys, supertanker propellers, and other human-made noise sources.
The result?
Mass strandings of whales...dolphins and porpoises found bleeding around their brains and ears…marine mammals and fish becoming lost on their migratory routes and ending up alone and starving in alien waters…reduced growth and reproductive rates in many fish species…and much more.
Whales, dolphins, porpoises and many other marine animals use sound to “see” underwater, yet their world is becoming increasingly poisoned by painfully loud human-made noises in our oceans. It is up to us to help end the agony for these animals.
What can you do?
The UK Government has recently published a draft Marine Bill. This new draft law includes powers to protect the marine environment. The Government has begun a public consultation to find out what organisations and members of the public think about the new draft law.
Please tell the Government that the Bill must protect marine wildlife from the many threats they face, including human-made underwater noise pollution. Encourage them to create a network of protected sites in our seas as soon as possible.

Green Bay considers ordinance to clamp down on loud mufflers
Green Bay Mayor Jim Schmitt wants to send a message to people who ride motorcycles with loud, illegal mufflers. He hopes to give regular citizens a chance to help with enforcement. We only see motorcycles about six months out of the year, but to Mayor Jim Schmitt the noise resonates year-round.
"They're so loud and just obnoxious," he said of loud mufflers.
He's sick and tired of souped-up motorcycles with mufflers that aren't street legal disrupting city streets. "It's annoying. It's disrespectful," the mayor said. "It's disrespectful to your neighbor and something that we need to enforce more."

How Man-Made Noise May Be Altering Earth's Ecology
"Bernie Krause listens to nature for a living. The 69-year-old is a field recording scientist: He heads into the wilderness to document the noises made by native fauna — crickets chirping in the Amazon rain forest, frogs croaking in the Australian outback.
But Krause has noticed something alarming. The natural sound of the world is vanishing. He'll be deep inside the Amazon, recording that cricket, but when he listens carefully he also hears machinery: The distant howl of a 747 or the dull roar of a Hummer miles way.
Krause has a word for the pristine acoustics of nature: biophony. It's what the world sounds like in the absence of humans. But in 40 percent of the locations where Krause has recorded over the past 40 years, human-generated noise has infiltrated the wilderness. 'It's getting harder and harder to find places that aren't contaminated,' he says.
This isn't just a matter of aesthetics. The contamination of biophony may soon become a serious environmental issue — Krause says that man-made sounds are already wreaking havoc with animal communication. We worry about the carbon emissions from SUVs and airplanes; maybe we should be equally concerned about the racket they cause.
Krause's argument is simple. In a biophony, animals divide up the acoustic spectrum so they don't interfere with one another's voices. He shows me a spectrogram of a wilderness recording, in which all the component noises are mapped according to pitch. It looks like the musical score for an orchestra, with each instrument in its place. No two species are using the same frequency. 'That's part of how they coexist so well,' Krause says. When they issue mating calls or all-important warning cries, they aren't masked by the noises of other animals." "Bernie Krause listens to nature for a living. Thousands expected at Heathrow protest
Thousands of protesters are expected to converge today in Sipson, a village which will be demolished if plans go ahead for a third runway at Heathrow airport. People from all over the UK have descended upon Heathrow, in west London, to demonstrate against the expansion. Organizers have also planned speakers including MPs and high-profile environmentalists.
18 of Labour's 44 London-based MPs are opposed to the aggressive expansion of the airport.
The official website for the event, which is called Make a Noise Carnival, is linked to above. A warning - the site does play whooshing aircraft noises in a relentless loop, but I guess the point is nicely made - who'd want to live with that noise, 24 hours a day, seven days a week? Now you can see noise pollution
The government yesterday published online maps which allow users to enter their postcode to find out noise levels in their area. They show the level of environmental noise from airports, industry, and road and rail networks over 24-hour periods or during the night.
The environment minister, Jonathan Shaw, said: "Factors like transport and industry are a necessary part of modern life. But we need to look at what further practical steps we can take to make people's lives more tranquil. These maps provide the most comprehensive snapshot yet of noise in our country, all at the click of a mouse.
"We will use them to draw up action plans to reduce noise where practical from major roads and railways, as well as urban areas. The plans will include measures to protect designated quiet areas from any increase in noise."
But Peter Wakeham, director of the Noise Abatement Society, said: "What the maps don't have are football stadiums, nightclubs, military training ranges. If you live near Wembley it's terrible at the weekend. The maps need to be validated. At the moment they're just computer projections, not sound level recordings. At least they recognise there's a problem."
The maps cover 67,000 miles of road, 3,000 miles of railway and the areas around 18 airports. The website also includes the number of people exposed to noise levels. The areas covered are: Birkenhead, Blackpool, Bournemouth, Brighton, Bristol, Coventry, Hull, Leicester, Liverpool, London, Manchester, Nottingham, Portsmouth, Preston, Reading, Sheffield, Southampton, Southend, Teesside, the Potteries, Tyneside, West Midlands and West Yorkshire.
Do you think noise pollution is dangerous enough to warrant measures such as these noise maps? The government yesterday published online maps which allow users to enter their postcode to find out noise levels in their area. They... more -
