Parthenon frieze will be recreated in New Acropolis museum
LONDON. The long-awaited formal opening of the New Acropolis Museum in Athens has now been scheduled for September, after a series of delays. The gallery housing the Parthenon marbles, at the top of the museum, with a view towards the actual Parthenon 300m away, will be finally unveiled, although many of the other displays are not expected to be completed until next year.
After years of discussions, the museum has now decided how it will present the marbles. The originals are being displayed alongside plaster casts of the pieces removed from Greece, most of which are in the British Museum in London.
An earlier plan was to place gauze curtains in front of the casts, to make it obvious they are not originals. The museum has now opted for a simpler solution. The casts will be lighter in colour than the museum’s originals, which have a patina.

Christians, We Have A Problem With Our "Good" News
I have always believed that God is love and a loving God does not tortue people eternally. Serious bible study shows how certain words chosen in the New Testament to translate the texts into Greek, added Greek mythology concepts that the Old Testament doesn't support-namely the hellfire doctrine.

Xeriscape, the Art of Water Conserving Landscaping
Garden centres in countries affected by drought, like Spain for example, are promoting Xeriscaping (or Xeroscaping) in order to motivate people to help save water. This technique of water conserving landscaping doesn’t refer to cactus gardens or those that are all tiled up and plantless. The possibilities of Xeriscaping are plentiful, resulting in lush and flowery garden designs. This concept of gardening has been around since the 80ies in the US. As climate patterns shift, xeriscaping is catching on in other areas and has been very popular here in Spain for the last few years. The term itself derives from the Greek word ‘xeros’, meaning dry, and the word ‘landscape’.
The idea behind Xeriscapes is to create gardens with a rational water use, to avoid any waste of water, especially in Mediterranean and warm temperate climates. Saving water however is not the only objective of Xeriscaping. It also intends to eliminate the amount of chemical fertilizers and pesticides as well as petrol-driven machinery to keep the garden in shape. Plus is saves you money and maintenance.
How does it work? When designing the landscape, plants whose natural requirements are appropriate to the local climate should be chosen. They don’t necessary have to be all local plants, but they should originate from the same climate. Furthermore, water loss through evaporation and run-off should be avoided.
Examples for common plants used in Western xeriscaping are agave, cactus, lavender, juniper, sedum and thyme, according to Wikipedia. Important factors are how to group plats together when planting, according to their water need and the shelter they give/take from other plants. Instead of the typical lawn that needs a lot of water and maintenance (hence more negative impacts due to the machinery), there are special drought-tolerant turf grasses that can be combined with other, less water needing plants to reduce the lawn area. The most efficient watering system is drip irrigation because no water is lost through evaporation. Garden centres in countries affected by drought, like Spain for example, are promoting Xeriscaping (or Xeroscaping) in order to motiva... more -

Traditional Jewelry Making: Cypriot Filigree Designs
In this short documentary, we see the making of fully handmade filigree jewelry. Filigree is a method which includes the twisting of very fine wires of gold or silver. An important aspect of the artistic and cultural heritage of Cyprus and one which reveals Greek, Etruscan and Middle-Eastern influences, all connected with the history of the island and the many conquerors who passed by through the centuries. However for multiple reasons, this is a dying form of art.
As an independent filmmaker, I wanted to showcase this unique art form as I think its one of my country's cultural traditions that should not die away. Within this effort I am showcasing some of the very few artists who continue to practice this art in the hopes of raising awareness and appreciation toward the talent and workmanship that goes into each one of these pieces. In this short documentary, we see the making of fully handmade filigree jewelry. Filigree is a method which includes the twisting of v... more -

Critical Decision Time for Humans: Earth's Kyros Moment, learn focus through jubil...
The founders of the Turtle Island Project believe residents of Earth are facing a Kyros moment because of the abuse of the environment.
Kairos is Greek for seizing the moment.
The Turtle Island Project promotes respect for the planet, nature, wildlife and fellow humans.
Turtle Island Project founders say we can learn a lot from Earth-based cultures like the Celts and Native Americans.
Dr. Cairns said a former of chanting called jubilation (that he demonstrates in this video) helps him focus on the problems he wants to tackle - plus demonstrates the interconnection between humans and the Earth.

Showcasing 10,000 years of civilization.
The Cyprus exhibits at the 'Metropolitan Museum' in New York, the 'British Museum' in London and the other museums across the world, are only but a few places where one can begin to understand the incredible history that this small island of the Mediterranean has to exhibit. Also it is perhaps a way in which one may begin to understand why it has been an island which all the major powers in history wanted to have under their command. From the Acheans and Ancient Greeks, to the Roman Empire, the Crusaders and up to today where half of its territory is still occupied by the Turkish army.
This short documentary, featuring the 'Pierides Museum' in Larnaca, showcases from the very heart of Cyprus, a sample of this history and civilization for a different view of Cyprus. Not the one of drunken summer parties with young holiday goers, but one of art and culture. The Cyprus exhibits at the 'Metropolitan Museum' in New York, the 'British Museum' in London and the other museums across the world, a... more -
Looted Sculptures to be sent home
Two ancient sculptures of Greek goddesses dug up by looters in Sicily in 1978 are to be returned.
The statues were donated in 2002 to the University of Virginia which agreed to hand them back to Italy.
They were found outside the Sicilian city of Aidone, at the site of Morgantina, an ancient Greek settlement where they were displayed in a temple.
The sculptures are thought to represent Persephone and Demeter and date back to around 525BC. Two ancient sculptures of Greek goddesses dug up by looters in Sicily in 1978 are to be returned. ... more -
