Mariah Carey in a Bikini, Before and After Photoshop
Here’s a classic case of before and after Photoshop: the pic on the left was taken some weeks ago, while Mariah was posing in for a magazine and the picture on the right appears to be the final result of that same photo shoot. How so? Well, Mariah has the same belly necklace on, the same hairstyle, same bikini with a little editing on the bra (probably to improve the aesthetics of the cleavage) and obviously, some photoshopping around Mariah’s body.
What’s been edited on Mariah’s body? Well, first of all, the Photoshop managed to fix what a possible tummy tuck caused: the belly button, which from long and big became tiny and cute. Moreover, the entire aspect and definition of the abdomen and waist have been transformed in this surreal and impossibly flat stomach.
Secondly, the...

Fox News airs altered photos of NY Times reporters?
On the July 2 edition of Fox News' Fox & Friends, co-hosts Steve Doocy and Brian Kilmeade labeled New York Times reporter Jacques Steinberg and editor Steven Reddicliffe "attack dogs," claiming that Steinberg's June 28 article on the "ominous trend" in Fox News' ratings was a "hit piece." During the segment, however, Fox News featured photos of Steinberg and Reddicliffe that appeared to have been digitally altered -- the journalists' teeth had been yellowed, their facial features exaggerated, and portions of Reddicliffe's hair moved further back on his head. Fox News gave no indication that the photos had been altered.
After putting up the photos of Steinberg and Reddicliffe, Fox & Friends also featured a photograph of Steinberg's face superimposed over that of a poodle, while Reddicliffe's face was superimposed over that of the man holding the poodle's leash.

Fan Demand Resuscitates You Suck at Photoshop
The humorously bitter video series You Suck at Photoshop will return June 27 after a fan backlash erupted following the show's abrupt ending earlier this year.
Show co-creators Matt Bledsoe and Troy Hitch will revisit their deliriously demented video tutorials, which feature miserable office drone (and photo-editing expert) Donnie Hoyle delivering caustic, bite-size lessons in layering effects, clone stamping and the quickest route to getting fired.
"Once fans began to realize this was the end of Donnie Hoyle, there was a sudden outcry of anger and confusion," said Hitch, who voices the tutorials, in a phone interview. "People were sending hate mail ... posting [threatening] comments and generally doing everything in their individual web 2.0 power to get us to bring Donnie back."
"It was truly the will of the people that took us down this path," added Bledsoe, who said the duo was motivated to bring the show back after seeing "hundreds of people submitting Photoshop tributes" in Donnie's memory. Tallying more than 9 million pageviews over the 10-episode run and picking up two Webby wins (for "Best How-to" and "Best Comedy Series -- People's Voice") didn't hurt either.
Bledsoe and Hitch, partners at ad agency Big Fat Institute, said they think You Suck at Photoshop's desperately dorky and spastic lead character resonated so strongly with viewers because it wasn't immediately evident that Donnie was fictional.
"Donnie can out-Photoshop 90 percent of the population, but that's the only thing he has going for him," said Hitch. "So [he] was born of a lot of people we've met working in advertising, people like him with chips on their shoulders."
"We used eBay auctions, Facebook accounts and fake websites to dimensionalize Donnie," said Bledsoe. "And hundreds of people could call in and talk to [Donnie's hardcore World of Warcraft guildmate] Sn4tchbuckl3r on his Skype account. It all went way past the typical viewing experience." How to spot a Photoshop job
Scientific American has a nice article listing the top five mistakes that photo-fakers make when they use Photoshop to doctor piccies.
Surrounding lights reflect in eyes to form small white dots called specular highlights. The shape, color and location of these highlights tell us quite a bit about the lighting.
In 2006 a photo editor contacted me about a picture of American Idol stars that was scheduled for publication in his magazine (above). The specular highlights were quite different (insets).
The highlight position indicates where the light source is located (above left). As the direction to the light source (yellow arrow) moves from left to right, so do the specular highlights.
The highlights in the American Idol picture are so inconsistent that visual inspection is enough to infer the photograph has been doctored. Many cases, however, require a mathematical analysis. To determine light position precisely requires taking into account the shape of the eye and the relative orientation between the eye, camera and light. The orientation matters because eyes are not perfect spheres: the clear covering of the iris, or cornea, protrudes, which we model in software as a sphere whose center is offset from the center of the whites of the eye, or sclera (above right).
