McCain-Palin rally brings out the ignorant
This video is really sad. If you ever wondered why the USA is in trouble, it's not entirely Palin-McCain's fault. It's people like this.
If you want to vote for Palin-McCain, I suppose that's fine (I guess you like higher taxes and wars) but that's your opinion. However, the plethora of morons on this video show that people still judge others by the most superficial methods (such as their names) which is a step backwards.
Here I thought we were moving past judging people by their skin color, but these folks have actually regressed.
Witness the disdain the one lady unleashes on the horrific concept of helping the poor. I guess Jesus was a terrorist too. This video is really sad. If you ever wondered why the USA is in trouble, it's not entirely Palin-McCain's fault. It's ... more -

Kerry faces off with O’Reilly over bailout bill
“Many of us have been warning about these problems,” Senator John Kerry told Fox’s Bill O’Reilly during a discussion of Monday’s failed $700 billion Wall Street bailout vote in the House of Representatives. “And, if you go back and look at the record, you’ll see it very clearly. In 2004, as a presidential candidate, I personally talked about how we needed to have stronger oversight on [Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac], about the housing market, about deregulation and the excess of deregulation.” Senator Kerry also said that efforts to prosecute predatory lending have been blocked since the turn of the century.
While 61% of House Democrats voted for the legislation, 66% of Republicans voted against it, with a total tally of 205-228. “And just because their feelings were hurt by something that [House Speaker] Nancy Pelosi said, is not an excuse to screw the guy on Main Street and his savings account, to screw small businesses, to screw companies across the country. It was an act of cowardice and selfishness and pure politics.”
“This is not a rescue of Wall Street, this is a rescue of Main Street,” Kerry closed.

Fox Doesn’t Want You to Know About McCain’s Role in Keating Five
‘Cut his mike,’ producer suggests
The Keating Five scandal, and John McCain’s role in it, has received relatively little mention in presidential campaign coverage, and at least one Fox News host seems dedicated to keeping it that way.
Appearing Thursday morning on Fox & Friends, radio host Mike Papatino tried to remind viewers about McCain’s intervention with federal regulators on behalf of real estate mogul Charles Keating, who was trying to avoid regulations of a savings and loan he owned during the S&L crisis of the 1980s.
F&F’s Steve Doocy told Papatonio to "pipe down," called him "rude" and demanded he "cut it out." A show producer could be overheard saying "cut his mike."
As Papatonio tries one last time to explain the details of the Keating Five scandal, Doocy again cuts him off.
"This is not the History Channel," he says.
Papatonio’s apparent crime was interrupting fellow guest Michael Reagan, the conservative radio host, who was arguing that it would be unfair to judge McCain based on his actions 20 years ago.
"It has everything to do with what’s happening today," Papatonio said before being told to pipe down.
Regardless of whether Papatonio was being rude, preserving an orderly debate certainly could not have been Doocy’s goal in silencing the guest. Not two minutes before his admonition that Papatonio was "being rude," Doocy repeatedly interrupted his guest to deliver talking points that might as well have been written by the McCain campaign.
At least three times Doocy interrupted Papatonio as he argued that McCain’s political gambit to "suspend" his campaign and delay Friday’s debate was more a response to his flagging poll numbers than an attempt to fix the economic crisis. Doocy wasn’t buying it.
"If Barack Obama wants to do so much for the economy, why doesn’t he go to his day job and work in the us senate?" he asked Reagan, cutting off Papatino’s argument. ‘Cut his mike,’ producer suggests ... more -
Does ideology trump facts? Studies say it often does
We like to think that people will be well informed before making important decisions, such as who to vote for, but the truth is that's not always the case. Being uninformed is one thing, but having a population that's actively misinformed presents problems when it comes to participating in the national debate, or the democratic process. If the findings of some political scientists are right, attempting to correct misinformation might do nothing more than reinforce the false belief.
This sort of misinformation isn't hypothetical; in 2003 a study found that viewers of Fox News were significantly more misinformed about the Iraq war, with far greater percentages of viewers erroneously believing that Iraq possessed WMDs or that there was a credible link between the 9/11 attack and Saddam Hussein than those who got their news from other outlets like NPR and PBS. This has lead to the rise of websites like FactCheck and SourceWatch.
Saying that correcting misinformation does little more than reinforce a false believe is a pretty controversial proposal, but the claim is based on a number of studies that examine the effect of political or ideological bias on fact correction. In the studies, volunteers were shown news items or political adverts that contained misinformation, followed by a correction. For example, a study by John Bullock of Yale showed volunteers a political ad created by NARAL that linked Justice John Roberts to a violent anti-abortion group, followed by news that the ad had been withdrawn. Interestingly, Democratic participants had a worse opinion of Roberts after being shown the ad, even after they were told it was false.
Over half (56 percent) of Democratic subjects disapproved of Roberts before the misinformation. That rose to 80 percent afterward, but even after correcting the misinformation, 72 percent of Democratic subjects still had a negative opinion. Republican volunteers, on the other hand, only showed a small increase in disapproval after watching the misinformation (11 percent vs 14 peercent).
Along those lines, a pair of political scientists, Brendan Nyhan of Duke and Jason Reifler of Georgia State, have shown a similar effect, this time concerning misinformation surrounding the presence of WMDs in Iraq, tax cuts, or stem cell research. Participants were shown news reports that contained inaccuracies, followed by a correction. The news reports were not real, but were presented to the volunteers as coming from either the New York Times or Fox News. Again, the findings suggest that facts that contradicted political ideology were simply not taken in; if anything, challenging misbelief with fact checking has the counterintuitive effect of reinforcing that misbelief.
Unlike the Bullock study, Nyhan and Reifler only demonstrate this effect of congitive dissonance on Republican volunteers, and acknowledge that follow-up studies are needed with liberal or Democratic volunteers.
These findings, if true, have worrying implications. Cognitive dissonance won't help people make rational decisions, but it also suggests that there's little point in arguing with someone who holds an opposing belief. Could this response be why, despite being repeatedly refuted in the media, the percentage of Americans who believe Sen. Obama to be a Muslim continues to grow? The research might also apply beyond the political to other attitudes—I'm thinking of the constant flame wars between fans of the PS3 and Xbox 360, or Mac and PC users. Is all that time spent in the Battlefront or the Soap Box wasted?

Fox host doesn't try to 'hide his racism'
When Fox's Neil Cavuto garnered the coveted "Worst Person in the World Title" from MSNBC's Keith Olbermann on Monday it wasn't the first time, but Cavuto's latest misstep exceeds even his own previous appearance in the slot.
In an attempt to blame the Democrats in Congress for the current economic meltdown, Cavuto told Rep. Xavier Becerra (D-CA) last week that he should have warned bankers about possible problems with Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac.
"I'm just saying," Cavuto insisted, "I don't remember a clarion call that said, 'Fannie and Freddie are a disaster. Loaning to minorities and risky folks is a disaster.'"
"Wow," commented Olbermann. "Usually they hide their racism a little bit better at Fox."
The two runners-up to Cavuto for Monday's Worst Person title were Fox's Steve Doocy -- for claiming comedian-turned-politician Al Franken must have broken some law by giving Saturday Night Live the idea for a tv sketch lampooning John McCain -- and a South Carolina GOP official who suggested that Sarah Palin's family problems might make his own drunk driving arrests less of an issue with the voters. Raw Story reported on both incidents yesterday.

Conservative commentator Bill O'Reilly's website hacked
DAN GOODWIN (The Register)
Two days after someone broke into the email account of vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin, unknown intruders have hacked the website of conservative commentator Bill O'Reilly and posted personal details of more than 200 of its subscribers.
The breach into BillOreilly.com came as retaliation for remarks O'Reilly made on Fox News condemning the attack on Palin's Yahoo email account, according to Wikileaks, a site that makes it easy for whistleblowers, hackers and anyone else to leak documents.
As proof, Wikileaks posted a screenshot of the BillOreilly.com administrative interface that showed the names, email addresses, passwords, and home town of 20 subscribers of the website. In all, information belonging to 205 subscribers was intercepted, according to Eric Marston, CTO of Nox Solutions, the company that maintained the website.
The hack came in response to comments O'Reilly made on Fox News about the posting of contents of Palin's email account, including pictures of her daughter and her contact list.
"I'm not going to mention the website that posted this, but it's one of those despicable, slimy, scummy websites," O'Reilly said, according to this snippet from YouTube. "Everybody knows where this stuff is, OK, and they know the people who run the website, so why can't they go there tonight to the guy's house who runs it, put him in cuffs and take him down and book him?"
It's evident from the remark that no one bothered to tell O'Reilly that Wikileaks is a multi-national, bulletproof organization that has successfully withstood serious take-down efforts before. He's not the first conservative to have his lack of tech credentials exposed. Republican presidential candidate John McCain is said to be email-challenged.
According to Marston, the hackers were able to access the list by trying a large number of variations of the website's administrative URL. He said all affected members have received an email and a phone call informing them of the breach and urging them to change their password. The site has since been completely locked down, Marston said.
While the information exposed on Wikileaks may seem minimal, it has the potential to imperil the BillOreilly.com subscribers listed in ways they may not have anticipated. A case in point is Carolyn Carpenter, 68, of Henderson, Nevada. The list showed she used a six-letter word from the English language to access her account. Early Friday evening, when told she should change all accounts that used the password, she replied: "Oh damn, I use it all over the place."
