    • Denver Depending Upon Less Lethal Weaponry at Democratic Convention

WOW...the Denver Police Department ordered pepper spray guns and extended-range tasers and weapons that incapacitate people with high-intensity sound?

Hmmm...extremely interesting to me that they chose these less lethal weapons when it comes to incapacitating an aggresive person. Appears that a message is being sent here that they're good enough to stop an attacker in their tracks.

    • Obama says he'll work for Mideast peace

Democratic presidential contender Barack Obama stepped into the thicket of Mideast politics Wednesday, declaring that neither the Israelis nor the Palestinians are strong enough internally to make the bold concessions necessary for peace.

Obama said he would work to bring the two sides together "starting from the minute I'm sworn into office." But he cautioned it is "unrealistic to expect that a U.S. president alone can suddenly snap his fingers and bring about peace in this region."

I had a gut feeling that this guy would be better than better and do this!

    • Dignity and Prosperity for Peace

"La Sicilia" newspaper, July 2, 2008

Prem Rawat at the Massimo theater raised a call for world peace and brotherhood

“I have 6.7 billion reasons to want peace on Earth, as many as the people living in this planet.” That’s how Prem Rawat, Indian messenger of peace, also known with the honorary title of Maharaji, opened his speech at the Massimo theater. The Indian master, founder of the TPRF (The Prem Rawat Foundation), a no profit organization promoting many humanitarian initiatives worldwide, spoke for the first time in Palermo, Sicily, after bringing his message of peace and human dignity to over 10 million people in more than 250 cities of 50 nations around the world.

His speech was simple, but extremely profound, rich of considerations which have been disarming and sometimes moving for the audience of the Massimo theater, filled to its extreme capacity. That was in occasion of the event called “Peace, a message without borders”, organized by the association ‘Percorsi’, and patronized, among others, by the president of the Republic, Mr. Giorgio Napolitano.

Before Rawat’s arrival on stage a video told the audience about his life and the activities of his foundation. He spoke immediately after: “Peace is like water, like air: it is something you cannot do without, something you cannot miss. It is inside every person’s heart, and it transcends every boundary, whether they are religious, racial, ethnic or national. Without it everything is out of balance.”

And then an invitation to find an innate need inside each person. “If you want peace – went on Rawat – it is inside of you, it is close to you. Open your heart, and you’ll discover it.”

Rawat strongly condemned wars, especially those fought in the name of God. “The wars happening in the world have no excuses. There are more educated people today than ever, but the need for peace is even greater.”

The address of the Indian ‘guru’ was dotted by many small examples: a way to exemplify peace meant to break thorough to the hearts of the people attending, whatever their culture, nationality, language, religion, as the attendees at the Massimo theater were really heterogeneous. Above all, the example of the lights illuminating a soccer field. “Can you consider the lighting system in a soccer field? – explained Rawat - People do not really realize that without those lights they could not see the players in the field, because everybody is watching the game so attentively. Well, those big lights are composed of small light bulbs. Each one of us should be like a light bulb: we must bring our small contribution to peace, so we can lighten the entire soccer field, which for us human beings is like the entire planet.”

Prem Rawat extended his call for peace not only to individuals, but to the great nations of Earth:

“If a nation is strong – underlined the master, using sentences borrowed by other speakers he met around the world – it should be kind; if it is smart it should be simple; if it is wealthy it should be humble.” But he then pointed: “Every effort institutions and governments make towards peace, every effort for justice among human beings cannot be really successful if it is not have deeply rooted in every human being.”

According to Rawat, peace must go along with dignity for every human being and with prosperity, which, in his words, “you can have when a person is rich within”.

The Indian master concluded his speech expressing his certainty that the future generations will carry on the work for peace: ”This voice is not only Prem Rawat’s voice, but the voice of 6.7 billion people on the face of this earth. And it will be there also when I am not there any more.”

    • Gore: can do more for environment as private citizen, but lobbyists block policy m...

Former U.S. Vice President Al Gore said he can do more to fight global warming as a private citizen than he could working as a government official even if Barack Obama wins the presidency.

``My own best role is to try to bring about a sea change in public opinion,'' Gore said today on NBC's ``Meet the Press.'' ``Policy makers who know the right thing to do run up against a wall set up all around them by the lobbyists and the special interests,'' he said.

This is what's destroying democracy and putting roadblocks into World Peace as well, it's the fact that lobbyists can change what the popular vote/majority really want and really think what is good for them, the nation and the world.

Lets take a look at some actual scenarios:

Food industry lobbyists are crawling about the Executive Office of Management & Budget to stop approval of new regulations that would give consumers the right to know which retail outlets were supplied tainted meat that’s subject to recall. http://www.madcowblog.com/2008/04/articles/mad-cow-upda...

Why are they "blocking" consumers the "right to know" law? Well, of course its about the money..they would lose business for their alleged breaking of laws to get food to the public and it would cost a ton to get back their good standing. So, bring in the Lobbyist. They hound the lawmakers, steeling their rare and precious time and furthermore, they spend big bucks on these lawmakers (remember Abrahamhoff?) one way or another and can go to jail doing it, but that doesn't stop them, they have lots of bucks backing them! They can even get an outta jail card real easy..check Abrahamoff's partner recently getting his sentence cut in half!!! What bank thief is going to get that?!!?? http://ap.google.com/article/ALeqM5i9Zn601MMJ052ccjowQX...

All the above are real examples of what a lobbyist does. Now take the Jewish Lobby...why is America backing Israel despite their breaking International laws AND committing war crimes http://www.boston.com/news/world/middleeast/articles/20...
      http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worldnews/1557613/Israe... many others..

The Jewish lobby, or AIPAC http://www.aipac.org/) lobbys Americas lawmakers and shapes policy toward Israel every day. To see what influence they have check out this site: http://www.stopaipac.org/ (AIPAC, or the American Israel Public Affairs Committee, describes itself as the most important organization affecting the U.S. relationship with Israel. With a budget of $65 million, and membership now standing at over 100,000, it is no wonder that congressional staffers consider it one of the most powerful and effective lobbies on Capitol Hill.)

So, lobbyists are the evil do-ers in our society. Just out for themselves and not in the public interest. So why do we have them still? Greed, money, power.

Better laws are needed to keep these thieves at home watching tv or playing some video games. Better yet, in prison where they belong.

      What are we waiting for?

    • Israeli filmed shooting prisoner

If this hadn't been filmed and released internationally...what's the likelihood the IDF would care??

"An Israeli human rights group has released a video that shows an Israeli soldier shooting a blindfolded Palestinian man with a rubber coated steel bullet at close range.

BTselem released the video on Sunday, saying it had forwarded a copy to the Israeli military police and was demanding an investigation be opened.

The video shows a Palestinian man, whom BTselem named as Ashraf Abu Rahma, handcuffed and blindfolded standing by a group of Israeli soldiers.

One soldier aims his weapon at the Abu Rahma's legs, from about 1.5 metres away, and appears to fire at him.

Everytime I hear about how monstrous and barbaric Hamas or Hezbollah is, I remind myself that the only reason people think this way is because the mainstream mediafails to report on how horrible Israel is. This is in kind with the recent waves of attacks on journalists by the IDF and there overall lack of concern for arabs. It was also kicked out of the Lebanon by Hezbollah. Is the IDF falling apart internally, is this a sign that morale among the Israelis is falling?...let's hope so (because maybe they'll be forced to work out peace then)

    • British pm Demands end to Israel settlements >It's about Time<

British Prime Minister Gordon Brown on Sunday demanded that Israel cease settlement construction and promised more money to jump-start the battered Palestinian economy.
Gordon Brown, left, shakes hands with Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas.
      >It's about time<
In his first trip to Israel and the Palestinian territories as Britain's leader, Brown repeatedly stressed that economics are key to Mideast peace, and said Israel should ease travel restrictions in the West Bank that have hindered commerce.
      >especially medical supplies to innocent people<
But his strongest comments were reserved for the settlements: "I think the whole European Union is very clear on this matter: We want to see a freeze on settlements."
      >No Sh*t Sherlock...its illegal to begin with<
"Settlement expansion has made peace harder to achieve. It erodes trust, it heightens Palestinian suffering, it makes the compromises Israel needs to make for peace more difficult," Brown said at a news conference with Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas in the West Bank town of Bethlehem.
      >DITTO<
Israeli government spokesman Mark Regev said he would reserve comment on Brown's remarks until the British leader meets with Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert in Jerusalem later Sunday.
      >guess he can't believe a western leader has finally spoke up for the Palestinians<
Abbas went further in his criticism of Israel's construction in disputed east Jerusalem and the adjacent West Bank, telling Brown that Israel lacks commitment to the "principles and spirit" of Mideast peace efforts. He singled out stepped-up construction of homes for Jews in areas of Jerusalem the Palestinians claim for their capital.
      >The Israeli government sees an and to their candy store of steeling land from innocent, unarmed people, so their grabbing as much as they can<

    • Al-Qaeda: Winning or losing?

Nearly seven years into America’s “global war on terror”, the result remains inconclusive. Al-Qaeda lost a safe haven in Afghanistan, but is rebuilding another one in Pakistan; Mr bin Laden is at large, but Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, who masterminded September 11th, has gone on trial in Guantánamo Bay; many leaders have been captured or killed, but others have taken their place; al-Qaeda faces an ideological backlash, but young Muslims still volunteer to blow themselves up.

True, America has not been struck since 2001, but European capitals have been bombed. A number of plots have been averted on both sides of the Atlantic. Al-Qaeda and its nebula of like-minded groups still pose the most direct threat to the security of Western countries, and of many others besides. Western intelligence agencies are convinced al-Qaeda still wants to develop non-conventional weapons, whether chemical or biological agents or “dirty bombs” that create a cloud of radioactivity. In Iraq bombs are already mixed with chlorine gas. Even a rudimentary nuclear bomb, say the spooks, might not be beyond the reach of terrorists.

Not a bad writing if you want to finish it by clinking the link....but....

Maybe when America elects a new and intelligent president, and this new president modifies Israeli policy and furthermore helps Palestine build a state and rebuild its infrastructure, just maybe the world will see a great reduction in the attacks from Al-Qaeda. Americas policy in Israel is the backbone of the violence. Personally, I can understand, but can the new president?

    • Betancourt in plea to FARC rebels at massive Paris rally

The recently freed French-Colombian politician, Ingrid Betancourt, has urged her former captors, the Marxist FARC rebels, to release all hostages.

Ms Betancourt was leading a rally in the French capital, Paris - one in a series of global demonstrations calling for an end to kidnapping and for peace.

Colombia is preparing for what is expected to be one of the biggest protest marches in its history.

The FARC has waged a 44-year civil war there and still holds 700 captives.

In Paris, thousands gathered near the Eiffel Tower to hear Ms Betancourt, who was freed in a daring military rescue earlier this month after six years in captivity.

She read out a list of names of those still held by the FARC and called for their release.

"We want freedom for everyone," said Ms Betancourt, speaking in Spanish amid applause and chants from the crowd of "Libertad", or Freedom.

Her speech was also broadcast in Colombia, where marches are expected to take place in most of the country's more than 1,000 municipalities.

Pop star Shakira is to lead the biggest demonstration, in Bogota, where people will walk along six different routes around the capital.

But the BBC's Jeremy McDermott in Bogata says the question is whether the rebels of the FARC group are going to listen.

      'Impervious'

A previous demonstration in February this year saw almost a million people take to the streets in Bogota alone.

Now, after the successful rescue of 15 hostages earlier this month from the FARC (Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia), the best-known of whom was Ms Betancourt, the turnout is expected to be even greater, with concerts and events being held in more than 40 countries.

It looks like Ms Betancourt is going to lead the peace movement world wide..she would be a perfect person for this.

Officers were dispatched to the area of 28th Street and Iris Avenue at about 10:30 p.m. Wednesday on a report of a nude man who was rolling around in the street. When they arrived, they found Christopher Dornfield crawling on a nearby patch of grass, police said.
When Dornfield refused to comply with officers’ orders to hold still, he was shot with a Taser. He was shocked twice more after he tried to get back on his feet and advanced toward officers, police said.
The incident began Wednesday when Dornfield split a hit of acid with one of his friends, 22-year-old Boulder resident Brian Skutch, and went “out of control,” another one of his friends told police.

According to the report, Dornfield’s friends tried to calm him down by taking him for a drive after he became agitated. When Dornfield jumped out of the car and took off his shoes and pants, his friends wrestled him back inside.

A short while later, according to police, Dornfield hit Jacob Ottenstein, his roommate, in the face. At that point, the group decided to call police and kick Dornfield back out of the car, leaving him alone at about 28th Street and Iris Avenue.

One officer was dragged to the ground and kicked while the other was bitten by a girl who jumped on his back.

Up to 30 people took part in the attack, which happened in North End, Croydon, on Wednesday afternoon.

Trouble flared when the 15-year-old threw her food wrapper back on to the ground and became aggressive. The two officers are currently on sick leave.

One eyewitness said he saw two police officers struggling with a girl before a group of youths joined in and began pushing and shoving the officers.

"The police - there were only two of them - they were really outnumbered and all these yobs were just pushing them out of the way.

Hey all you Liberals and peaceful people,

I think it's time we stand up for our beliefs, and stop pandering to the false Patriotism that the Right Wing continually uses to beat us up.

Frankly, the war in Iraq is illegal and immoral, and I am against both the war, and the troops that are fighting there. There is no reason why we should support a volunteer armed forces, regardless of whether or not the soldiers are pro-war or not. For too long Democrats and liberals have been painted un-patriotic because they don't often believe military force is necessary.

If the Democrats in Congress had more of a backbone, they'd stand up against war, and not be pigeon-holed into a corner for being anti-war and pro-troops.

I'm against them both. Does that anger you? Am I anti-American? No, I'm not. I just use my brain.

    • Birthday wishes pour in for Mandela

Messages of congratulations, tributes and good wishes are pouring in from home and abroad, from ordinary people and influential leaders alike for former South African president Nelson Mandela on his 90th birthday.

President Thabo Mbeki extended his message on behalf of the entire nation to the internationally revered statesman and former political prisoner on Friday.

"We are proud as South Africans that Mr Mandela and his generation of fighters embraced with both passion and reason the mission that history imposed on them and more than met the demands that it enjoined them to fulfil," he said in Pretoria on Friday.

Mbeki said South Africans glowed in the light of fame because the country stood on the shoulders of icons such as Mandela.
      Harmony and equality

He recalled Mandela's statement at the opening of the defence case in the Rivonia Trial in the Pretoria Supreme Court on 20 April 1964: "I have cherished the ideal of a democratic and free society in which all persons live together in harmony and with equal opportunities," Mandela said back then.

"It is an ideal which I hope to live for and to achieve. But if needs be, it is an ideal for which I am prepared to die."

Mbeki urged the current generation to return to the question of their mission and how to fulfil it, as conditions and circumstances evolved, much in the same way that Mandela's generation had to discover and fulfil its mission.

"Finding answers to this question simultaneously as we celebrate his birthday is perhaps the biggest present we can give to Nelson Mandela," said Mbeki. "Many happy returns - ukhule ukhokhobe!"

    • Pope calls on religions to unite for Peace and against terrorism

Pope Benedict called for all religions to unite against terrorism and resolve conflicts peacefully on Friday and heard an Islamic leader urge Christians to overcome "misconceptions and prejudices" of Muslims.

"In a world threatened by sinister and indiscriminate forms of violence, the unified voice of religious people urges nations and communities to resolve conflict through peaceful means and with full regard for human dignity," Benedict told an inter-religious meeting.

The pope, in Australia for the Church's World Youth Day, also said the Catholic Church was open to learn from other religions, a comment seen in the context of moves to improve relations with other religions, particularly Islam.

"The Church eagerly seeks opportunities to listen to the spiritual experience of other religions," he said.

Catholic-Muslim relations nosedived in 2006 after Benedict delivered a lecture in Regensburg, Germany, that was taken by Muslims to imply that Islam was violent and irrational.

Muslims around the world protested and the pope sought to make amends when he visited Turkey's Blue Mosque and prayed towards Mecca with its Imam.

Sheikh Mohamadu Saleem, executive member of the Australian National Imams Council, told the pope:

"Muslims should become more inclusive and universal in their understanding of their religions. At the same time, significant segments of the Christian and other religious communities should overcome their misconceptions and prejudices of Islam and Muslims."

"If Muslims, Christians and other faith communities reach out to one another and build bridges rather than erect barriers, the whole of humanity will rejoice forever," Saleem said.

This would be the foundation of Peace if this could happen. Communication is the key and understanding that we are all on this planet together and made of the same flesh and blood.

    • What does 'Jihad' really mean?

After years of using the word "jihadist" to describe terrorists who carry out attacks against civilians and the U.S. military, the Bush administration has finally realized that doing so actually pays those groups a compliment in the eyes of some Muslims.

Since the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, the Bush administration has relied on terms like "jihadist" and "Islamic extremists." But jihad has very positive connotations in the Islamic world. It is akin to religious duty: when someone wants to better themselves, they embark on a jihad. Whether it's to quit smoking, pray more, and in some cases, fight off anyone preventing them from practicing their religion.

"Just like you wouldn't call Josef Stalin a hero of the revolution, you don't want to call Osama bin Laden a jihadist. He loves it," says Duncan MacInnes, a spokesman for the State Department's Counterterrorism Communication Center.

I must say, I was a bit railroaded one time into thinking it was a bad thing. But after reading much about the faith and the extreme faith I came to realise that it wasn't meant to be a WAR or VIOLENCE, but a struggle, thats another meaning for Jihad.
