Internet security researchers on Thursday warned that hackers have caught on to a "critical" flaw that lets them control traffic on the Internet.
An elite squad of computer industry engineers that labored in secret to solve the problem released a software "patch" two weeks ago and sought to keep details of the vulnerability hidden at least a month to give people time to protect computers from attacks.

EPA to ban carbofuran
"Today, the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) announced that the residues of the pesticide carbofuran that end up on our food and in our drinking water are too high, and may be unsafe. Thus, after first registering the chemical for agriculture use in 1969, and estimating that about 1 million pounds are used annually in the U.S., EPA is now proposing to cancel all uses of the pesticide.
EPA found in their review of the pesticide that the acute dietary risk from food alone is about 2.5-fold above acceptable levels for the general population, and almost 5-fold above acceptable levels for toddlers, the age group with the highest estimated dietary exposure.
The EPA is now proposing to also prevent carbofuran residues to contaminate imported sugarcane, rice, bananas, and coffee, something that EPA had earlier proposed to allow and NRDC and others had strenuously objected to." Northern lights mystery exposed
Scientists have exposed some of the mystery behind the northern lights.
On Thursday, NASA released findings that indicate magnetic explosions about one-third of the way to the moon cause the northern lights, or aurora borealis, to burst in spectacular shapes and colors, and dance across the sky.
The findings should help scientists better understand the more powerful but less common geomagnetic storms that can knock out satellites, harm astronauts in orbit and disrupt power and communications on Earth, scientists said.
A fleet of five small satellites, called Themis, observed the beginning of a geomagnetic storm in February, while ground observatories in Canada and Alaska recorded the brightening of the northern lights. The southern lights — aurora australis — also brightened and darted across the sky at the same time.
These auroral flare-ups occur every two or three days, on average. Scientists have exposed some of the mystery behind the northern lights. ... more -
Ex-cop: Widow tried to hire me to kill hubby No. 4
A former police officer and a neighbor said Wednesday that a Georgia grandmother who now has five dead spouses tried to hire them to kill her fourth husband more than two decades ago.
Former police officer Allen Lawrence said he warned North Carolina authorities repeatedly for two months before Harold Gentry was shot to death in 1986 that Betty Gentry -- now Betty Neumar -- wanted her husband dead.
Neumar was desperate for money and wanted to collect on her husband's $20,000 life insurance policy, according to an indictment issued Tuesday.
"I've been living with this for 22 years, wondering if there was anything else I could have done," Lawrence said. "It's always bothered me. I know I did everything I could. But it still keeps me up at night."
Neumar, 76, is charged with three counts of solicitation to commit first-degree murder. She was first arrested and charged in May with one solicitation count, but authorities now say she tried to hire three people to kill Gentry in the six weeks before his bullet-riddled body was found in his rural North Carolina home.
Since her arrest, authorities in Georgia, Ohio and Florida have started to re-examine the deaths of her first child and four of the five men she married.
Neumar's attorney, Charles Parnell, did not return messages left Wednesday seeking comment. His client remains in Stanly County jail in lieu of $500,000 bail. 2 million folks in Nevada could be affected by the drought.
Temperature changes are being attributed to the drought:
"The reduction in water levels due to drought on Lake Mead can be seen by the white ring around the shore at Hoover Dam in Boulder City. Climate changes and a growing population could conspire to dry up two key water resources, Lake Mead and Lake Powell, within 13 years, scientists warn."
