    • Horse banned from pub

      Peggy, a 12-year-old mare, who has been a regular visitor at a pub for several years has been barred after the landlady bought new carpets.

      Peggy used to enjoy a pint of John Smith's bitter and a packet of pickled onion crisps alongside owner Peter Dolan, but when landlady Jackie Gray had the pub refitted, she had to bar Peggy.

      Mr Dolan said that Peggy began drinking in the pub when one day, instead of staying outside on the grass when he went inside, she followed him in and became a regular ever since. He said: "No-one even took any notice of her. Everyone just saw her as one of the locals."

      Mrs Gray had only just taken over the pub, said she was shocked to find one of her new regulars was a horse. She said: "Although she is probably cleaner than some of my customers, I had to put my foot down and show her the door."

    • How to serve absinthe.

      Always wanted to know how to serve it:

      You've heard Marilyn Manson sing its praises and seen Trent Reznor pour it in the video for "The Perfect Drug” and Kylie Minogue portray "the Green Fairy" (a.k.a. absinthe) in Moulin Rouge. But, what the hell is absinthe? It's a green, sometimes red or black, anise-flavored liquor made with herbs and wormwood that gives you a fuzzier feeling than your average alcoholic beverage. And, this is how you serve it:

      The Traditional French Ritual:
      Step 1: Pour two shots of absinthe into the glass.
      Step 2: Rest the absinthe spoon on top of the glass.
      Step 3: Place one to two sugar cubes (to taste) on top of the spoon.
      Step 4: Pour another shot of absinthe over the sugar, soaking the cubes with the liqueur.
      Step 5: Light the absinthe-soaked sugar on fire and let the sugar burn until it caramelizes and starts melting into the glass. Be careful here: The blue flame is sometimes hard to see. Don't stick your finger in it see if it's on fire - it is!
      Step 6: Pour a shot of ice-cold water over the fired up sugar to put the fire out.
      Step 7: Stir any sugar that remains on the spoon into your absinthe. Once the water and sugar are stirred in, the absinthe will "louche," which means to turn a milky white-green shade. And, it's time to drink!

    • Heather Locklear locked up for alleged DUI in California

      actress Heather Locklear was arrested Saturday on suspicion of driving while impaired, TMZ.com reported.

      The 47-year-old star was pulled over by California Highway Patrol in the Santa Barbara area after a resident reported seeing the actress leave a parking lot and “driving erratically,” CHP spokesman Tom Marshall told the Associated Press.

      The officer then noticed Locklears car parked on a state highway, blocking a lane in Montecito, a city 90 miles northwest of Los Angeles. The actress was believed to be alone in the car, Marshall said.

      "In talking with her, (the officer) determines that she seems to be under the influence of something," Marshall said.

      Locklear was taken to the police station, where she was tested for alcohol and drugs.

      She was booked on suspicion of driving under the influence of prescription medication and was later released from custody.

      Calls to her publicists were not immediately returned.

      Locklear checked into a medical clinic in June to seek treatment for anxiety and depression.

      Last year, she got a divorce from Bon Jovi guitarist Richie Sambora after 11 years of marriage. They have a daughter, Ava Elizabeth.

    • Whisky Auction Defies Finance Crunch

      Swedish state monopoly alcohol retailer Systembolaget announced on Friday that Sweden's first whisky auction will be held on October 7th.

      Among the 400 bottles on offer include a Macallan from 1946 with a starting price of 24,000 kronor ($3,620).

      The organisers of the auction, which will be held by the Stockholm auctioneer's office, are not overly concerned that financial turbulence and the dire economic climate will dissuade potential buyers.

      "It remains to be seen. But demand for whisky is substantial and, with the emergence of clubs and whisky tasting, has become something of a people's movement," said Sören Nylund at Systembolaget.

      Further items on offer at the auction, which will beheld in Frihamnen on October 7th, include a Very Very Old Fitzgerald Original Sour Mash from 1953, a Highland Park 1964 and a Glenury Royal 29 Years Old.

    • Scots drinkers down more spirits

      People in Scotland drank almost two litres more pure alcohol last year than those living in other parts of Britain, according to new research.

      The figures from Scottish Health Action on Alcohol Problems (Shaap) were based on alcohol sales data. They showed an average Scot over the age of 16 consumed 11.8 litres compared to 9.9 litres in England and Wales. The higher level north of the border was due to the fact that Scots drinkers consumed more spirits. In total, almost eight million more litres of pure alcohol were consumed in Scotland in 2007.

      Shaap, an independent medical advocacy group, said basing the research on sales figures gave a more accurate picture than other surveys because people often under-report how much they drink. For most types of drinks, the amounts purchased were similar across Britain. However, there was a notable difference in the level of spirits bought in Scotland - an average figure of 3.5 litres per person, compared to 1.8 litres in England and Wales.

    • States sue MillerCoors over alcoholic energy drink

      Twenty-five states and interest groups have asked MillerCoors to cancel the release of an alcohol-infused energy drink, Sparks Red. Authorities are concerned that the drink’s colorful packaging and apparent parallel to popular energy drinks like Red Bull will appeal to teens and college-age drinkers.

      According to MillerCoors’ official Sparks Web site, current versions of Sparks contain 6–7 percent alcohol by volume, as compared to Miller High Life and Coors beers, which contain less than 5 percent alcohol by volume.

      State attorneys general claim that the new beverage will contain nearly eight percent alcohol by volume. State and interest groups are also concerned that mixing alcohol with the stimulants in Sparks, which include caffeine and guarana, can have dangerous effects.

      The Center for Science in the Public Interest (CSPI) filed suit against MillerCoors Brewing Company over the production of Sparks, noting that “Sparks’ appeal to young people is enhanced by its sweet citrusy taste, redolent of SweeTarts candy,” said CSPI litigation director Steve Gardner. “MillerCoors is trying to hook teens and ’tweens on a dangerous drink.”

      According to a study performed at Wake Forest School of Medicine, college students who mix alcohol and energy drinks have twice as many episodes of weekly drunkenness.

    • Free drinks Ladies? Show us your knickers!

      The powers that be have clamped down on a Melbourne boozer's planned "No Undie Sundie" - a promotion "urging women to remove their underwear in return for a $50 drink card"

      The Saint Hotel in St Kilda punted the intended deknickering via a newspaper and online ad with the invitation: "Free glass of champagne for first 100 ladies flash bra or undies to bar staff; for free drink hang your undies on the line above the bar for $50 drink card."

      This didn't go down at all well with Victoria's liquor licensing director Sue Maclellan, who met landlord Cameron Manning and ordered the event's cancellation "because it was likely to encourage irresponsible drinking"

      Encourage irresponsible drinking? Would that not have already occurred prior to flashing the bar staff? Is this really the only way to get women in to the pub in the first place?

      Nasty.

    • Texting worse for drivers than drink or drugs

      The UK's Transport Research Laboratory has established that taking your eyes off the road while driving to look at a tiny screen held in hands that are no longer gripping the wheel is really, really dangerous.

      *Kind of stating the obvious there.*

      The Times reports that in (simulator) tests reaction time dropped by 25 per cent for those sending text messages, while drunk people were 12 per cent slower and even the stoned only dawdled by 21 per cent.

    • UK Government identifies 9 types of problem drinkers

      Alcohol-related illnesses and accidents cost the National Health Service (NHS) in England approx £2.7billion a year, without counting the cost to police and others of excessive drinking habits.

      The government hopes that the campaign will help counter the widespread attitude that a good night out must involve getting excessively drunk.

      "This will be a tough one to crack. Research found many positive associations with alcohol among the general public -- even more so among those drinking at higher-risk levels," said a spokesman for the Department of Health.

      "For these people, alcohol is embedded in their identity and lifestyle, so much so that challenging this behaviour results in high levels of defensiveness, rejection or even outright denial."

      The nine types of problem drinker identified by the department are:

      -- "de-stress drinkers": those who use alcohol to calm down at the end of a hard day. Typically middle-class men and women;

      -- "community drinkers": driven by the need to belong. Usually lower middle-class men and women, who drink in big groups;

      -- "hedonistic drinkers": crave stimulation and want to lose control. Often divorced people with grown-up children, with exhibitionist tendencies;

      -- "macho drinkers": tend to spend most of their spare time in pubs. Mostly men of all ages;

      -- "re-bonding drinkers": use drink as a way of keeping in touch with friends;

      -- "conformist drinkers": driven by the need to belong and seek structure. Typically men aged 45-59 in clerical or manual jobs;

      -- "boredom drinkers": those who drink to pass the time and relieve monotony;

      -- "depressed drinkers": craving comfort, or feeling of safety. Can be of any age, sex or socio-economic group;

      -- "border dependents": these regard the pub as an alternative home. They visit regularly, at all times of day, weekdays and weekends. Tend to drink quickly.

      What worries me most is I have been known to be all 9 types in one evening.

    • 'Drinking is healthy for lazy smokers'

      "Drinking can be good for your heart. But you have to be a lazy smoker with an aversion to fruit and vegetables to reap the full benefits." Wahey!!

      In what the Sydney Morning Herald describe as the 'most unfair medical finding this year,' a UK scientist has apparently discovered that "smokers with the worst diets and poorest exercise habits could consume as many as 14 standard drinks a week," and still lower their risk of heart disease compared to not drinking at all.

      According to Michael Marmot, who conducted the study, the lazy, unhealthy smokers can't just increase the amount they drink in the hope it will reduce their heart-attack risk, as "Greater quantities were less beneficial, though still better for those people than being teetotal."

      The much healthier non-smokers who eat properly and drink moderately (compared to not at all) put themselves at a higher risk of heart disease, but that their 'absolute risk' was still obviously much lower.
