    • An Inconvenient Truth; The Opera

Al Gore's famous keynote presentation is already a book, Oscar-winning movie and popular topic of debate. So what more could Gore want? Jeeez, the presidency?

Following in the footsteps of such epic films as The Lion King, The Little Mermaid and Legally Blonde The Musical, An Inconvenient Truth will soon "hit the boards." And we're not talking the dregs of off-Broadway. According to The New York Times, Milan's legendary opera house, La Scala, is in contracts to mastermind a masterful production: An Inconvenient Truth The Opera.

Humph? Opera? That's a great way to spread the message to the masses . . .

Alas, opening night is not until 2011, but here's a little teaser of what the opera might look like--just to tide us over.

Please watch! I guarantee you'll get a good chuckle, especially from the last scene which features a very sweet polar bear, group of skeptical scientists and that infamous cherry picker.

    • Web Browsers: Speed Testing the Latest Web Browsers

"Read the hype on every new web browser released or due out this year, and you'll see claims that every one of them is "faster" than all the others. You could compare super-specific tests and decipher all the code-brain terminology, and you'd still be left wondering which browser starts quicker, uses less memory, and slides through dynamic interfaces like Gmail the fastest. Since our squadron of independent analysts had the week off, we ran the latest editions of Firefox, Internet Explorer, Opera 9.5, and Safari for Windows through some unscientific but highly geeky tests ourselves on a plain old Windows computer. Take a look at the full (and somewhat unexpected) results after the jump." • An Inconvenient Truth: The Opera!?

"First it was the film and the book. Now the next stop for Al Gore's "An Inconvenient Truth" is opera.

La Scala officials say the Italian composer Giorgio Battistelli has been commissioned to produce an opera on the international multiformat hit for the 2011 season at the Milan opera house. The composer is currently artistic director of the Arena in Verona.

La Scala also announced Thursday that Daniele Gatti will conduct next season's gala premiere of Verdi's "Don Carlo" on Dec. 7."

    • Conductor steps in to save opera

An opera conductor stepped in to save a tenor who lost his voice by taking over his singing part whilst continuing to lead the orchestra.

Antony Walker took over Vladimir Kusmenko's role during a performance of Aida in Pittsburgh in the US as the ailing singer lip-synched on stage.

Walker said it was "an amazing experience" but hopes to "never have to do that again".

He explained, as a trained vocalist, he often sings during rehearsals.

"I do that with every opera I prepare," he said. "I find you can empathize with the singers better."

Kusmenko told artistic director Christopher Hahn that he was ill the afternoon before the performance so a substitute tenor, Eduardo Villa, was called in to replace him.

He was scheduled to arrive halfway through the performance, but his flight was delayed.
