MySpace's suicide case?
"The lawyer for a Missouri mother accused of creating a fake MySpace page to harass a 13-year-old girl is arguing that charges should be tossed out of court because 'if she is guilty, then so are millions of Internet users every day.'
Lori Drew became the focus of national outrage after the girl committed suicide. Court papers filed yesterday seize on a possible weakness in the prosecution case that has been noted by several legal experts since the May indictment: While Drew's alleged behavior may have been wrong, there is no legal sanction against it.
In charging Drew, prosecutors relied on their belief that she, like countless others on social networks such as MySpace, created a fake identity -- in this case, a 16-year-old boy, "Josh Evans," who flirted with and then rejected 13-year-old Megan Meier.
"The government, in its zeal to charge Lori Drew with something, anything, has tried to criminalize everyday, ordinary conduct: the wayward or misuse of a social-network website," defense attorney H. Dean Steward wrote in a motion to dismiss that was filed yesterday.
Prosecutors say Drew created the "Josh Evans" identity in order to strike up a flirty conversation with Meier, who had been friends with her daughter. After a few weeks of chatting, "Josh Evans" began to send Megan nasty messages. Finally, her father said, one suggested that "the world would be a better place'' without her.
In October 2006, soon after allegedly receiving the message, Meier hanged herself in her bedroom. "

F8: Zuckerberg insults underlings, Al Gore and audience at developer conference
The only word to describe Facebook cofounder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg's keynote at the company's second annual F8 developer conference.? Awkward. In this clip, Zuckerberg tries to demonstrate how useful Facebook platform applications are by comparing iLike to MySpace, Zynga to Las Vegas and Causes to — wait for it — Al Gore. Clearly, Zuck's speechwriters meant the whole thing as a kind of joke — the kind they should have known Zuck wouldn't be able to deliver. As usual, Zuck throws his employees under the bus for his inability to speak in public: "Not sure where the team came up with these examples. They're pretty funny." Yes, Mark, we're not cringing at you, we're cringing with you! Don't drink and drive, then post on Facebook
Two weeks after Joshua Lipton was charged in a drunken driving crash that seriously injured a woman, the 20-year-old college junior attended a Halloween party dressed as a prisoner. Pictures from the party showed him in a black-and-white striped shirt and an orange jumpsuit labeled "Jail Bird."
In the age of the Internet, it might not be hard to guess what happened to those pictures: Someone posted them on the social networking site Facebook. And that offered remarkable evidence for Jay Sullivan, the prosecutor handling Lipton's drunken-driving case.
Sullivan used the pictures to paint Lipton as an unrepentant partier who lived it up while his victim recovered in the hospital. A judge agreed, calling the pictures depraved when sentencing Lipton to two years in prison.

MySpace Confirms OpenID Support, Launches Data Availability On Flixster and Eventf...
MySpace is rolling out a couple of announcements this morning a day ahead of Facebook’s F8 developer conference.
The first is confirmation of our story that they are supporting OpenID, although they aren’t releasing any details (It’s our belief that they will first issue OpenID IDs, and possibly become a relying party later).
The company is also announcing the launch of two new Data Availability integrations: Flixster and Eventful (we built what we believe is the first Data Availability app last month).
MySpace is also making a core policy change to Data Availability. Previously third party services were not allowed to store any MySpace user profile information at all - they simply requested it from MySpace, used it to create a web page and then dumped it. Now MySpace is allowing 24-hour caches of profile information, and permanent caches of certain “core elements” of a user profile. DUI killer's Myspace used against him?
In short, this dude ran a red light after drinking and hit two people, standard DUI homicide case ... but the "accident investigation division" found out through this guy's Myspace profile, that he lives a (wannabe) money, sex, drugs lifestyle ... so ... they are using his profile against him, they have searched his house and seized his computer ...
This guy is guilty, no doubt, for driving while being drunk ... but should they be using his Myspace as proof of this? Or for anything for that matter?

American Poverty Includes Internet Access!
"Ten years ago, MySpace didn’t exist. Neither did Facebook. Just one site, called SixDegrees.com, dominated the online social networking market. But soon a bunch of sites sprouted up: LiveJournal, Friendster, LinkedIn, MySpace, and in 2004, Facebook. Back then, Facebook was just for Harvard kids.
But a new study from the University of Minnesota says these days even the least privileged kids have profiles on MySpace and Facebook. And they’re on the internet all the time. That finding goes against past studies that have found a ‘digital divide’ between rich and poor kids.
The researchers surveyed 600 urban teens from families making less than $25,000 a year. Nearly all the kids said they go online, usually from home. And more than three quarters of them have pages on MySpace or Facebook. The students say they’ve learned valuable technology skills in the process: they edit and upload photos, videos and music, and some of them even mess with html to personalize their pages. The researchers say teachers might want to build on that experience. Slipping a little MySpace between reading and ‘rithmetic could be really rewarding."

Facebook agrees child safety plan
Facebook is to add a slew of new safeguards to protect young users from sexual predators and cyber bullies.
At the heart of the changes are efforts to ban convicted sex offenders from the site and finding better ways to verify users' ages and identities.
The agreement was announced by Connecticut Attorney General Richard Blumenthal in a deal along with other attorneys general around America.
"This marks another watershed towards social networking safety," he said.
It will "protect kids from online predators and inappropriate content," he added.
It comes on the heels of a similar comprehensive agreement that 49 states and Washington, DC, made with MySpace last January.
Seeking a gold standard
Mr Blumenthal, who co-chairs a working group of state attorneys general seeking to make social networking safer, said: "We are raising the safety bar, first with MySpace and now Facebook, and soon for other sites as we fight for an industry gold standard."
"Facebook and MySpace are showing how to aim higher and keep kids safer."
The world's second largest online networking site will build in more than 40 measures.
They include more automatic warning messages when underage members are in danger of giving out personal information to an unknown adult.
Facebook will also restrict the ability of users to change their listed ages to less than 18.
Facebook will also monitor a list of pornographic websites and links to such sites, aggressively remove inappropriate images and content, and increase efforts to remove groups for incest, paedophilia, cyber bullying and expel from the site individual violators.
Trawling sites
With MySpace's 200 million users and Facebook's 70 million, there has been a growing concern that such social networking sites are being used by predators to find and groom victims.
This agreement is the latest attempt by law enforcement officers to shield children, following a wave of high-profile cases in which adults have been charged with trawling these sites to meet young members.
"Social networks that encourage kids to come to their sites have a responsibility to keep those kids safe," said North Carolina Attorney General Roy Cooper.
Facebook found itself in the firing line last October when New York State Attorney General Andrew Cuomo subpoenaed the company, saying an undercover operation found the site responded too slowly to complaints of harassment and inappropriate conduct.
Facebook's chief privacy officer Chris Kelly said the site already had many safety features in place to protect users and that this was another step to enhance privacy.
"We have invested a great deal of effort to build a safer, more trusted environment," Mr Kelly said.
The only state not to sign on is Texas, which also had problems with January's MySpace pact.
"Texas continues to have concerns in the area in general, but we do continue our dialogue with the state of Texas," said Mr Kelly.
Officials said the safeguards in the Facebook and MySpace agreements could be extended to smaller sites as well.

Mother sues newspapers over Bebo defamation
A mother is suing six national newspapers for defamation and breach of privacy after they ran stories and photos taken from Bebo about a 'drunken party' that turned out to be false, reports the Independent.
On her Bebo page, Jodie Hudson described a riot of sex and wanton damage fuelled by under-age drinking that only ended when the police arrived. Newspapers leapt on the story and published photos from her Bebo site alongside their reports.
But Hudson's lurid description of the party, subsequently carried in a number of national newspapers, turned out to be fantasy. The media stories, and the accompanying pictures taken from Bebo, are now the subject of a landmark legal case that could redraw the boundaries of the use of information published on social networking sites including Bebo, Facebook and MySpace.
Should newspapers be able to access and - if deemed newsworthy enough - publish your photos and writings from social networking sites, without your permission? Surely its a journalist's reponsbility to corroborate stories like this *before* they publish them?

Younger bosses think Facebook is good
The attitude of bosses to Facebook and similar sites is changing, with many now embracing social networks rather than fearing them.
More than one in four managers now embrace the use of MySpace and Facebook as "untapped'' business opportunities, research revealed today.
Younger bosses were heading the cyber charge after initial scepticism about lost work productivity, while older managers were less likely to enlist their staff as Facebook friends, Mx reports.
The survey part of the "Konica Minolta Innovation: Mind The Gap" seminar series found about 33 per cent of managers in their 20s and 30s embraced the networks, compared with just 16 per cent of those over 40. One in three workers said the sites had a place in the office. 'Mental risk' of Facebook teens
Children growing up alongside the rise of social networking websites may have a "potentially dangerous" view of the world, says a leading psychiatrist.Dr Himanshu Tyagi said sites such as Facebook and MySpace may be harmful. He told the Royal College of Psychiatrists annual meeting people with active online identities might place less value on their real lives. And the West London Mental Health NHS Trust expert added this could raise the risk of impulsive acts or even suicide. Dr Tyagi said that people born after 1990 did not know a world without the widespread use of the internet.
He warned that the current crop of psychiatrists were perhaps not fully prepared to help young people with internet-related problems.
While social networking sites offered great benefits, he said, there were potential pitfalls. everything moves fast and changes all the time, where relationships are quickly disposed at the click of a mouse, where you can delete your profile if you don't like it, and swap an unacceptable identity in the blink of an eye for one that is more acceptable." "People used to the quick pace of online social networking may soon find the real world boring and unstimulating."It may be possible that young people who have no experience of a world without online societies put less value on their real world identities and can therefore be at risk in their real lives, perhaps more vulnerable to impulsive behaviour or even suicide."
He called for more investigation and research into the issue.
However, Graham Jones, a psychologist with an interest in the impact of the internet, said that while over-use of social networking sites could lead to problems, the risks posed by them had been overplayed Children growing up alongside the rise of social networking websites may have a "potentially dangerous" view of the world, says a lead... more -
Courtney Love, A Dose of Crazy
No one does crazy better than Courtney Love. We saw her strapped to a stretcher well before Brittany (copy cat) and who could forget the notorious compact throwing incident at MTV's Music Awards in 1995 when she decided to stand in the middle of Madonna's spot light. We LOVED it.
Sadly, you don't see much of Court in the pages of US Weekly but we want to assure you she is just as batty as ever. Subscribe now to Love's Myspace blog so you to can receive random updates on her mental and physical condition (oh yeah and she mentions her music too). Today she is pissed because she broke two toes (kicked someone's ass?)...thinks Perez is in danger (of heart disease?) and tongue lashed those meanies who "stole all her child's money" (are we still picking on Dave Grohl still?)
Below is an excerpt from today's blog entry. Misspelling and bad grammar are courtesy of Miss Love.

Facebook, Myspace users 'a danger to the world and themselves'
Online social networking site users are more likely to carry out extreme actions and develop a warped sense of their own identity, according to an expert at the West London Mental Health Trust.
Dr Himanshu Tyagi also suggested the sites may explain the recent Bridgend suicides, in which 17 young people from the same small town all killed themselves, and added:
""People used to the quick pace of online social networking may soon find the real world boring and unstimulating, potentially leading to more extreme behaviour to get that sense.
"Young people who have no experience of a world without online societies put less value on their real world identities and can therefore be at risk in their real lives, perhaps more vulnerable to impulsive behaviour or even suicide."
So is this there truth in this or is this sensational nonsense, akin to the claim that all emos class 'flirting with death' as a hobby? Is this an expert warning of the valid cons of the ever-expanding world of social networks or a man out of touch with today's modern communication methods?
