Vanity Fair satirizes McCain
When the New Yorker came out with a cartoon on its cover of the Obamas as fist-bumping militants (complete with a burning flag), the blogosphere wondered if the magazine or someone else would come up with a satirical cover of John McCain. Well, Vanity Fair did just now.
The magazine posted a cartoon on its website featuring John McCain holding a walker with one hand and giving the fist bump to a pill-popping (well pill-holding) Cindy McCain. The Constitution burns in the fireplace of the Oval Office while a painting of George W. Bush hangs on the wall.
In a short accompanying article, Vanity Fair speaks of it's "affectionate rivalry" with the New Yorker. (They share a building and play softball against eachother).
"We had our own presidential campaign cover in the works, which explored a different facet of the Politics of Fear, but we shelved it when The New Yorker's became the "It Girl" of the blogosphere," Vanity Fair writes. "Now, however, in a selfless act of solidarity with our downstairs neighbors here at the Condé Nast building, we'd like to share it with you. Confidentially, of course." When the New Yorker came out with a cartoon on its cover of the Obamas as fist-bumping militants (complete with a burning flag), the b... more -

On the Waterboard

Chris Hitchens submits himself to torture
Author and journalist Chris Hitchens had in the past declared that waterboarding, the practice of pouring water into the breathing passageways of a person, might not be classed as torture but as "extreme interrogation" so Vanity Fair editor-in-chief Graydon Carter challenged him to undergo the process. He is now very much convinced it is torture.
The "official lie" about waterboarding, Hitchens says, is that it "simulates the feeling of drowning". In fact, "you are drowning - or rather, being drowned". Author and journalist Chris Hitchens had in the past declared that waterboarding, the practice of pouring water into the breathing pas... more -

Bill Clinton losing it again
MILBANK, S.D. -- Former President Bill Clinton today unleashed a salty stream of epithets to describe former New York Times reporter and current Vanity Fair writer Todd Purdum, calling him "sleazy," "dishonest," "slimy" and a "scumbag."
****************************************************************************
There's one thing I've noticed watching both Gore and Clinton over the years.
Gore can show anger in public over things that affect other people, like Bush's war, his refusal to do anything about GHG emission or Abu Ghraib. At the same time I've never seen him out of control over something that was done to him even while he would have had plenty of reasons to trash the media after their "amazing" performance in 2000.
But Bill Clinton loses it only when it's about him. I've never seen him behave like this when it was about some kind of policy. Only when he was the target.
Now why is that? MILBANK, S.D. -- Former President Bill Clinton today unleashed a salty stream of epithets to describe former New York Times reporter a... more -

Calm down, everyone: Miley's just following the script
I can't believe this even made the news this week. I don't get it. Have we become so puritanical that we can't accept a semi-nude (look! No boobies showing!) photo taken by a fantastic photographer? I mean, look at the expression on her face, the way Leibovitz had her posed... sure she's topless, but she's keeping herself hidden. And I think if you want to read into the photo as a piece of art work, you might find there's a lot more to think about here than, for instance, Britney on her back on the cover of Rolling Stone.
