    • Sir Paul McCartney: "Smoke the Pipes of Peace!"

"He spoke out after artists and politicians questioned his involvement in the 400th anniversary celebrations of French-speaking Quebec City.

They say his presence is inappropriate because of Britain's conquest of New France - including Quebec - in 1760.

His comments, made on Radio Canada, refer to his 1983 hit "Pipes of Peace."

"I think it's time to smoke the pipes of peace and to just, you know, put away your hatchet because I think it's a show of friendship," the former Beatle said, ahead of the open-air concert on Saturday. "

Like, you know, smoke the pipes of peace man. (The original song was about "playing" the pipes of peace- but smoking weed is like, totally better than playing the flute, man.

Also: Who turns down Paul McCartney because Britain conquered them- IN 1760?!? He was a BEATLE, damn it!

    • TELEVISION > Forgotten People

Canada's CBC last week broadcast this story about one Inuit community in Puvirnituq, a village on Hudson Bay in northern Quebec's Nunavik region. Although Canada marked National Aboriginal Day on June 21, CBC's Justin Hayward filed this news story about how change has marked this community. The Inuit in the area had formerly cultivated a nomadic life now live established and rooted in small towns like Puvirnituq. Dog teams have been replaced with the skidoo or snowmobile. Cultural traditions are vulnerable to change. Young people and adolescents, having lost their cultural compass, have experimented with drugs, and suicide has soared in this remote outpost. Check out video from Hayward's broadcast on CBC about how Puvirnituq is struggling to adapt to changes in culture and community. • Court ruling on parental discipline stuns, raises questions of right to raise chil...

If you deny your children access to TV or withhold their allowance, can they take you to court? And win?

That implausible scenario emerged after a judge in Gatineau sided with a 12-year-old girl who challenged her father after he refused to let her go on a school trip for disobeying his orders to stay off the Internet.

Experts in family law and child welfare say they were dumbfounded by last Friday's ruling by Superior Court Justice Suzanne Tessier.

    • The World According to Monsanto Premieres in Montreal, Quebec City and Toronto

Documentary filmmaker Marie-Monique Robin's film "Le Monde selon Monsanto" ("The World According to Monsanto") explores the history and future direction of chemical and so-called "life sciences" industrial company Monsanto. Based in St. Louis, Missouri, Monsanto was founded in 1901 to manufacture the synthetic sweetener saccharin. The multinational biotech company in the intervening decades has produced styrene and PCBs; became the leading producer of Agent Orange used in the Vietnam War; manufactures Roundup, the best-selling herbicide; and has advanced the development of genetically engineered seeds and bovine growth hormone. The company has also had a history of mergers and spin-offs, and in 2000 merged with Pharmacia and Upjohn.

"Le Monde selon Monsanto" aired on the French-German television network ARTE earlier this year, and had its premiere in Switzlerland in February. Marie-Monique Robin's film -- based on her book "Le Monde selon Monsanto" -- is the result of three years of research and interviews from around the world, and explores the biotech giant's legal battles and controversies in the manufacture of toxic herbicides and the production of genetically modified organisms. Monsanto currently markets its brand as a "life sciences" company emphasizing its green image.

"Le Monde selon Monsanto" will have public screenings at Ex-Centris in Montreal on Friday, May 23; at Cinéma Le Clap in Quebec City starting Friday, May 23; and at the Toronto Mediatheque on Monday, May 26.

    • Kart Vader VS Rendez Vous, a contrast in Street Racing Styles

People always talk about Rendez Vous as the ultimate street race video, but Kart Vader is the real deal! No fake audio or mystery cars.

Kart Vader is out of his mind and I love it. Lucky he survived!

The real question is, why do both these segments take place in French-speaking parts of the world?

Rendez Vous was filmed in Paris in the 1970s, and Kart Vader is filmed in Quebec in around 2004. I will admit that the Parisian version does have a more artistic appearance, almost Hitchcockian in feel. Kart Vader, being a Quebecois home video, has more of a “Jackass”, lo-fi, Guerrila quality.

There must be a genetic link to why the French come up with this crazy stuff. I do not think this is a coincidence.
