Georgia-Russia conflict predicted in 2001 video game
Recent news coverage of the worrying ground war between Russia and Georgia could well leave gamers with a sense of deja vu.
The South Ossetia war, which began on August 7, bears a close resemblance to events portrayed in the 2001 Xbox and Playstation 2 game "Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon," the first level of which takes place against the backdrop of a struggle between Georgian rebel forces and the legitimate Georgian government in the South Ossetian region. Government spent £10k on consoles and games for inmates last year
The Prison Service in England and Wales is banning 18-rated games from September 30.
Currently, prisoners demonstrating good behaviour and those at risk of suicide are allowed access to games.
However under new rules, not only will 18-rated games be banned, but prisoners will have to buy their own consoles and games - previously bought by the prisons.
Yes, you read correctly. Last year the government spent over £10,000 on games hardware and software for people behind bars. Ain't that justice for you?
"For those prisoners permitted to use games consoles in cell, the cost of purchasing consoles and games will rest solely upon the prisoner and will not be met by the taxpayer," said a spokesperson for the Prison Service.
About time too. The Prison Service in England and Wales is banning 18-rated games from September 30. ... more -

Microsoft: Marketplace design "not our smartest moment"
The current 360 dashboard doesn't make "all the things it could do" clear to Xbox owners, and with the current Marketplace design it's "too hard to find content", said Xbox Live boss Marc Witten.
Advertisement:
Speaking to Xbox 360: The Official Magazine, Witten said that many Xbox owners "didn't know all the things it could do".
"They might not have known they could look at photos. They might not know they could plug in their iPods or watch movies. We found out that when they did know, they were much happier and felt like they were getting more value. The current 360 dashboard doesn't make "all the things it could do" clear to Xbox owners, and with the current Marketpl... more -

Microsoft's Shane Kim fine with no Xboy
In an interview with Eurogamer, Microsoft Game Studios VP Shane Kim says he's "happy" the company never got into the handheld market, explaining the division has plenty on its plate with the Xbox 360 and Xbox Live. He goes pretty deep into the issue, almost shutting down the idea of the Xboy entirely by expressing Microsoft is happy to let Sony and Nintendo fight it out.
Kim believes mobile is more important for MS and Windows Mobile is a really "compelling opportunity" for the company. He explains that it's a way for the company to get into the arena without having to worry about creating more hardware. Microsoft has certainly learned that making good hardware isn't easy and can be hazardous.

Grand Theft Auto IV
When Grand Theft Auto III first hit the PS2, the gaming world’s jaws collectively dropped in awe. Never had there been a game that had was so deep and all encompassing. Never had there been a game that featured a living, breathing city that you could roam and do as you please. This was the “it” moment for gamers. Each edition that followed featured excellent improvements in all areas. Vice City had a brilliant retro 80s theme while San Andreas got very gangster and kept gamers with huge smiles on their faces. But the crown jewel was the long awaited debut of the GTA series on both the PS3 and Xbox 360. With so much hype going into a single game, it’s damn near impossible to come close to the hype and blasphemous to exceed it. But if there was ever a game that blew the doors off the gaming world. Grand Theft Auto IV is it.

Using Infra-red sensors, hacked xbox 360 video game controllers, and a customized version of Half-Life 2 and the Source SDK, this interactive art installation explores pyscho-geography and how virtual spaces affect us as human beings. A virtual space is created of the physical location of the installation and viewers are able to explore the space without having to actually travel.
As we move through space and time, there is a tension between our physical bodies, the exterior forces of the world, and the virtual space we hold in our minds. Are space and time relative to the individual?
According to how we operate our bodies, light comes into the retina of our eyes which move as electrochemical impulses to the brain. We interpret these impulses as the scenery we are walking through and don't even see the impulses which make them up. The same is true for our other senses as well. This interaction between the world and our bodies is the ultimate computer, and our muscles provide the controls. Using Infra-red sensors, hacked xbox 360 video game controllers, and a customized version of Half-Life 2 and the Source SDK, this inter... more -
