Xbox 360 Price Cuts Take Effect Friday
Microsoft (NSDQ: MSFT) has slashed the price of its Xbox 360 video game console by almost 30% for some models.
The new prices, which take effect Friday, will see the price of the entry-level Xbox 360 Arcade system fall from $279 to $199. The basic Xbox 360 model, which features a 60GB hard drive, drops to $299 from $349. The high-end Xbox 360 Elite, which includes a 120GB hard drive, will sell for $399—down from $449. Gamer's Bill of Rights
It's not only for congress but for gamers as well. PC game publisher Stardock today released the "Gamer's Bill of Rights" at PAX that includes the following privileges gamers should have:
Gamers shall have the right to return games that don’t work with their computers for a full refund.
Gamers shall have the right to demand that games be released in a finished state.
Gamers shall have the right to expect meaningful updates after a game’s release.
Gamers shall have the right to demand that download managers and updaters not force themselves to run or be forced to load in order to play a game.
Gamers shall have the right to expect that the minimum requirements for a game will mean that the game will play adequately on that computer.

Microsoft try to steal limelight with yucky green Xbox controller
Apparently Microsoft didn't want Sony stealing all the limelight at the Leipzig Games Convention this week and have announced that the Xbox 360 is getting a new 'limited-edition' controller!
But don't get all excited, there's a problem, in that there isn't really that much new about it, apart from it been a rather puke-inducing green colour and having an 'improved' d-pad.
"The new limited-edition green wireless controller offers enhancements to d-Pad functionality, which will add to the experience of playing games where the d-Pad is the primary control mechanism. Microsoft supports Blu-ray mastering in Windows; is Xbox 360 next? Let's hope...
Finally giving up the last vestiges of its exclusive support for the HD DVD format, Microsoft has quietly launched a beta test of Windows-based mastering software for Blu-Ray discs.
Microsoft's new Image Mastering API update for Blu-Ray media is now available for download from the Microsoft Connect Web site as part of Windows Feature Pack for Storage, a software package in pre-release for Windows Vista, Windows XP, and Windows Server platforms.
The Blu-ray update offers the ability to do master-style optical burning on Blu-Ray media on Windows without the use of third-party software, according to information posted on the site.
The downloadable feature pack also contains pre-release editions of two other programs: a Smart Card Driver, with support for new form factors such as ICCD/CCID; and Active Storage Platform, for restricting access to portable devices such as USB Flash cards through certificate or password authentication.
But there's no clear indication yet, either on the site or elsewhere, as to whether the release of the Mastering API for Windows platforms might also signal a shift toward the Blu-ray bandwagon for Microsoft's Xbox 360 game console, which uses its own embedded OS.
Microsoft spokespersons who deal with these sorts of issues were temporarily unavailable today to answer that question. The company does note on its Connect site, though, that some of the technologies in the feature pack "require new hardware that may not be available."
According to information on the developers' site, Microsoft is releasing the beta "in order to get coverage on any legacy scenarios and install/uninstall scenarios."

4:05 pm EST August 19, 2008 - Minutes after the publication of this story today, Microsoft issued a statement to BetaNews continuing the company's policy of denying any plans to support Blu-Ray in the Xbox 360 game console. The company is still refuting any such intentions, despite the recent release of beta software from Microsoft supporting Blu-Ray disc mastering on Windows platforms.
"As we have stated, we have no plans to introduce a Blu-Ray drive for Xbox 360," a Microsoft spokesperson told BetaNews this afternoon. "Games are what drive consumers to purchase game consoles and we remain focused on providing the largest library of blockbuster games available."

Dad nails Xbox to tree
A father who was annoyed at his three sons' behaviour while playing on their Xbox has reportedly nailed it to a tree to teach his kids a lesson.
A statement from the mother:
"My husband had repeatedly warned our 3 boys about their behavior while playing the XBOX. Tuesday, after I arrived home from work, our oldest son told me to look in the backyard at "Dad's artwork". Well, I wasn't surprised to see the XBOX proudly displayed on the nearest tree..."

Microsoft: Marketplace design "not our smartest moment"
The current 360 dashboard doesn't make "all the things it could do" clear to Xbox owners, and with the current Marketplace design it's "too hard to find content", said Xbox Live boss Marc Witten.

Using video games to kill in real life
The American defence contractor Raytheon which has just won a huge contract to build a military training base in Wales, has announced that it is now going to use video game technology to control unmanned aerial vehicles in combat.
Instead of the standard joysticks being used to remotely fly the aircraft over the Middle East from as far a field as Arizona, more conventional input devices similar to the Xbox 360 and Playstation 3 controllers may be used. With such a powerful simulation system available for £200-£300 it is thought that this move could save plenty of money by training pilots in ultra realistic simulations but at a much discounted price. The newly trained pilots will then fly the UAV's for real with an identical set up to playing a standard Xbox!

Kotaku has revealed the complete 64 song “Set List” for Rock Band II.
It includes new stuff from Silversun Pickups, Paramore, Rise Against and older hits from bands like AC/DC, Duran Duran, Pearl Jam, The Who and Survivor… that’s right, we’ll soon be able to rock out to “Eye of the Tiger” on Rock Band!

EA DICE's upcoming first person parkour influenced game for PS3 and 360 that puts you in control of Faith as she runs, jumps, and fights her way to free her sister. The gameplay looks to focus less on combat and more on using the main character's acrobatic skills to evade enemies. Aside from just looking amazing, if the trailers are any indication, this game will have an amazing soundtrack!
