    • How to Fish, Deep Sea Fishing, and Sport Fishing

Leah D'Emilio gets her sea legs on board the New Del Mar in today's deep sea fishing episode, where she learns the basics of sport fishing from fishing expert and New Del Mar deckhand, Victor. Leah also talks to Captain Danny Ericson about the problem of overfishing, how fishing regulations work, and using sonar to find shoals of fish. With her newfound skills, Leah manages to reel in a salmon grouper by the end of the shoot, which made for a tasty supper that evening.

    • Monster Lake Produces Rare Giants

Standing on the shores of Thailand's Lake Monster, angler Brendan O'Sullivan knew there were endangered giants lurking near his baited hook—and that conservationists were happy to have him score a rare catch.

The 7-acre (2.8-hectare) lake is one of several created in recent years near Bangkok for anglers who want to hook some of the world's most exotic fish.

Lake Monster alone boasts roughly two dozen types of freshwater fish, many of them threatened with extinction.

While this might seem like a conservationist's nightmare, some praise the operation as an example of a burgeoning partnership between anglers and biologists who hope that catch-and-release sportfishing could help save at-risk animals.

"This is allowing anglers to catch rare species without having to go into the wild and try to remove a very rare fish from its natural habitat," said Zeb Hogan, a fisheries biologist at the University of Reno in Nevada.

As head of the National Geographic Society's Megafishes Project, Hogan is leading efforts to find, study, and preserve the world's largest freshwater fish, some of which are highly endangered but poorly understood, compared to ocean going behemoths. • The Food Chain - As Price of Grain Rises, Catfish Farms Dry Up -

Catfish farmers across the South, unable to cope with the soaring cost of corn and soybean feed, are draining their ponds.

“It’s a dead business,” said John Dillard, who pioneered the commercial farming of catfish in the late 1960s. Last year Dillard & Company raised 11 million fish. Next year it will raise none. People can eat imported fish, Mr. Dillard said, just as they use imported oil.

    • Stolen Ocean: The true cost of illegal fishing!

"There is a kind of theft that happens every day in a majority of the world's poor countries - and in many of the richer ones too...Yet many people would turn their noses up if they chanced upon a trove of this treasure.

      Because these jewels are fish.

The amount that Africa is losing, if new figures from David Agnew of Imperial College London are right, is about $1bn per year - the cost of licences that illegal fishers should have paid to catch what they are catching.

The ecological cost may, in the long run, be much higher.

"The immediate ecological impact is damage to habitat, because they are using trawls, and trawls are not always good for the ecosystems - they damage habitat for fish," says Dr Diallo.

"The second thing is pollution, because they are discharging at sea, and they can do anything they want."

This week, ministers from southern African nations are meeting in Namibia to discuss what they can do, and what assistance they need."

    • Urban Aquaculture: Professor Martin Schreibman wants to bring fish farms into the ...

"Professor Martin Schreibman says our oceans have been overfished beyond repair. If we're going to keep eating fish and chips, tuna tartare, and all those omega-3 fatty acids, we may have to rely on aquaculture. Schreibman is working to bring those fish farms into the city. Urban aquaculture? We'll bite."

    • tens of thousands of Spanish truck drivers went on strike to protest high fuel pri...

Nearly half of the gasoline stations in the northern province of Catalonia were out of fuel Tuesday morning, and the regional government sent an emergency convoy of 20 trucks to replenish their tanks.

Three automotive plants - one each operated by Nissan, Mercedes Benz and SEAT - said they were suspending operations because of a lack of spare parts. Vendors warned of shortages in fruit, vegetables and meat at the sprawling wholesale market in Madrid - Mercamadrid - if the strike continued.

Around major cities Tuesday, traffic continued to crawl behind the so-called "snail protests" of slow-moving trucks.

Television news reports showed ships in the Balearic Islands marooned in port for lack of fuel and cargo. In the northern province of Galicia and southern ports of Andalucía, the truckers' strike, coupled with a fishing strike, left docks and fish stalls barren. Wholesale markets were surrounded by protesters. And shoppers were hoarding staples.

So far the administration of Prime Minister José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero has offered a package of measures to ease the impact of higher fuel prices on small businesses, including lower social security contributions and subsidies of €55 million, or $87 million, to older truckers who choose to abandon the industry. But Somoza said the truckers considered those measures insufficient. They are seeking government regulations guaranteeing a minimum price for their services, above fuel costs.

The picture is not supposed to go with this link. Sorry about that.

    • Which industries need to shape up?

Forget Leonardo DiCaprio and his Prius. The true face of Hollywood is one of waste and environmental malaise. According to a UCLA report, Tinseltown is a strange mix of green forward thinkers and those entrenched in the old ways. Studios build and tear down tons of set materials without recycling, use thousands of diesel generators, and the industry as a whole emits almost eight million tons of carbon dioxide. Many studios have begun greening programs, but it’s going to take more than a couple eco-celebs to make up for a century of waste.

    • High oil prices make fishing unprofitable

Sushi is in danger of falling victim to high oil prices after fishing industry groups warned that a third of the world’s long-line tuna fleet – the ships that catch the high-grade tuna used in the Japanese dish – could remain docked this year as soaring fuel costs make fishing unprofitable.

The business is already in decline because of dwindling fish stocks. Japan Tuna, an industry group, said the cost of heavy fuel for long-range tuna ships had doubled over the past year to Y120,000 ($1,137, €733, £576) a kilolitre.

    • French fishermen blockade ports and fuel depots

"The French fishing dispute over rising fuel prices continues as fishermen ignore government calls to lift the blockade.

French fishermen ignored all calls made by the government to lift the blockades on ports and fuel depots, even though the administration had promised to provide the industry with 110 million euros in aid.

The fishermen claim that they will go out of business unless they can buy fuel at 40 cents a liter as opposed to the current market price of 80 cents, EuroNews reported.

The dispute is also spreading to other European countries. As the French disrupted fishing lanes and raided fish wholesalers, their Belgian counterparts came together in Zeebrugge to hand out free fish to the general public.

This resulted in hundreds of people gathering at the dockside to pick up their fresh plaice for free. This is while similar demonstrations were building up in Spain and Portugal.

The price of marine diesel has surged by 30 percent in the past four months."

Isn't it time the British got off their arses and took similar action about fuel prices or as usual do we just sit and whinge?!
