Mayweather puts HBO commentators on blast
"Even a guy like Jim Lampley, he praises Kelly Pavlik -- who has won some good fights, he beat Jermain Taylor twice, we have to give him credit for that -- but they talk about Kelly Pavlik, a white fighter, like he's the second coming Or they go crazy over Manny Pacquiao. But I'm a black fighter," Mayweather said. "Is it racial? Absolutely. They praise white fighters, they praise Hispanic fighters, whatever. But black fighters, they never praise.
"I've noticed it for a long time but I couldn't say anything because I had to do business with them. I'll still do business with them, but I'm done holding my tongue. I think HBO is great. But their announcers are full of s--t."

Hearings for the West Memphis 3 Scheduled for September 2008
Jessie Misskelley, Jr., Damien Echols, and Jason Baldwin, subjects of the 1996 "Paradise Lost: The Child Murders at Robin Hood Hills" and 2000 "Paradise Lost 2: Revelations" HBO documentaries, have a new court date in September 2008.
The hearing will likely cover new DNA evidence that Jessie Misskelley, Jr., Damien Echols, and Jason Baldwin DNA did not match.
Both HBO documentaries focused on the lack of evidence connecting the 3 16 year old boys to the murders and the possibility that profiling led to their arrest.
Case overview from wm3.org
"Shortly after three eight-year-old boys were found mutilated and murdered in West Memphis, Arkansas, local newspapers stated the killers had been caught. The police assured the public that the three teenagers in custody were definitely responsible for these horrible crimes. Evidence?
The same police officers coerced an error-filled "confession" from Jessie Misskelley Jr., who is mentally handicapped. They subjected him to 12 hours of questioning without counsel or parental consent, audio-taping only two fragments totaling 46 minutes. Jessie recanted it that evening, but it was too late— Misskelley, Jason Baldwin and Damien Echols were all arrested on June 3, 1993, and convicted of murder in early 1994."
Although there was no physical evidence, murder weapon, motive, or connection to the victims, the prosecution pathetically resorted to presenting black hair and clothing, heavy metal t-shirts, and Stephen King novels as proof that the boys were sacrificed in a satanic cult ritual. Unfathomably, Echols was sentenced to death, Baldwin received life without parole, and Misskelley got life plus 40.
For over 14 years, The West Memphis Three have been imprisoned for crimes they didn’t commit. Echols waits in solitary confinement for the lethal injection our tax dollars will pay for. They were all condemned by their poverty, incompetent defense, satanic panic and a rush to judgment. Finally, HBO to Distribute Shows on iTunes!
This is going to cost me a lot of money...
"Time Warner Inc.'s HBO and Apple Inc. are close to announcing a deal to make HBO series available for download on Apple's iTunes service, according to people familiar with the matter. The announcement could come as early as Tuesday, one of those people said.
The service marks an evolution in strategy for both HBO and Apple. It's the first time HBO has agreed to sell downloads of individual episodes of its shows. And Apple, in a departure, has agreed to charge more than its uniform price of $1.99 per television episode; HBO's shows will be more expensive, and their prices may vary on a sliding scale.
The HBO episodes won't be available immediately after they air. Instead, the pay-TV channel will make them available on iTunes when the shows are released on DVD, the people said. Both the higher prices and delayed release were important to HBO, which has avoided online sales for fear of cannibalizing its lucrative subscriber base.
HBO has been experimenting with online distribution in recent months. It made episodes of its psychiatrist drama "In Treatment" available free on various online services. It has been testing a subscription service, HBO on Broadband, that allows HBO subscribers to download a broad selection of shows to watch on their computers." Source: Apple, HBO Content Deal Imminent
Apple is close to announcing it has signed a deal to sell HBO programs and movies on the iTunes website, according to HBO employees involved in executing the agreement.
The deal marks the first time that Apple has agreed to a separate price structure for a content provider, one of the employees said.
The HBO insiders said that the new service would be launched and announced simultaneously, most likely in a week or two.
Details of the agreement are not yet known, but it is clear that HBO was able to secure better terms from Apple than other content providers, they said.
One possibility is that HBO programming will have a higher retail price than the flat $1.99 fee Apple currently charges for video content; another is that HBO will receive a larger cut of the same flat rate than other iTunes content providers receive.
Apple and HBO spokespeople did not return calls for comment on the deal.
NBC pulled its programming from iTunes last summer after Apple refused to charge more than $1.99 for that network's shows. In May, NBC struck a deal with Microsoft to sell its shows on the Zune website.
The HBO-Apple agreement is a strategic coup for both companies. Apple is trying to increase sales and awareness of its new Apple TV, a device that allows viewers to rent movies and buy content from your television. HBO wants to profit from its archive by letting fans buy old episodes of shows like Deadwood and The Larry Sanders Show.
The terms of this new deal could open a Pandora's box for iTunes. With the advent of pricing variation, movie studios and musicians will want to charge more for their big hits. Apple could be pressured to accept variable pricing for other content, a change it has resisted in the past.
HBO started an online download service earlier this year. It lets HBO subscribers watch 400 hours of programming a month and stream HBO's main channel. The service, called HBO on Broadband, is currently being tested in Wisconsin and will soon spread to other markets.
The deal with Apple is a more dramatic move for HBO, since the broadband service only allows current HBO subscribers to access the content. Selling through iTunes would let HBO tap everyone else.
In the past, HBO has been notoriously slow to offer content through new media, and the deal with Apple is a result of pressure from HBO's parent company, Time Warner, according to HBO employees. Apple is close to announcing it has signed a deal to sell HBO programs and movies on the iTunes website, according to HBO employees in... more -

Thomas Jefferson's Anarchist Sentiment
From the HBO Miniseries, John Adams. John Adams (Paul Giamatti,) Ben Franklin (Tom Wilkinson,) and Thomas Jefferson (Steven Dillane,) discuss the Constitution. Jefferson's sentiments are truly those of a freethinker. Which is why I have always loved his writings and agree wholeheartedly with his sentiments. Which is more than likely why the Constitution is open ended in that it gives the American people the opportunity to change their form of government if it should not suit the needs of the people or turn towards tyranny... that is, if they are not too distracted or fearful to notice. Why can't Americans stand up like our Founders did?
Where has that spirit of liberty gone? Where has the sustained fire and passion for Democracy gone? In this clip from HBO's magnificent miniseries John Adams, the president of the Continental Congress reads off King George III 's letter of disdain to the members calling them traitors and vowing to have them hanged for disserting their allegiance to the crown. Yet, did they cower? No, they stood up to the first King George, stared him down, and beat his empire with a passionate group of farmers, doctors and the like. Citizens just like you and me who stood up and gave their lives and all they had because this country and freedom were more important than the fear and apprehension of the future and the feigned stature of a King.
Yet today, we sit and cower waiting for a subservient Congress to do what it will never do in upholding its oath... Impeach the second King George with the same spirit that birthed this nation. We wait for them to stand up and face down the same threats and usurpations that brought these Founding Fathers to Philadelphia and dare to call ourselves free while allowing it to continue. I watch clips like this and weep for what we have become. Fearful, distracted, comfortable enablers who talk about the crimes and misdemeanors of these people but who don't on the whole seem to have the guts to do what is necessary to preserve the Declaration of Independence these men put everything they had on the line to sign.
And now, our elections are nothing more than popularity contests wrapped up in dollar bills. Words, promises, platitudes and jockeying to be the "most powerful" ruler in the world, when what we originally set out to do was to be a free country that was benevolent to all, not a money hungry empire maker. We have become that which that Declaration spoke out against.
So why is it that we Americans for all of our talk really cannot stand up as our Founders did? Are we on the whole truly too distracted to care? Or is that even a viable excuse anymore?Voting alone will not bring it back. One person will not bring it back. One election will not bring it back. Personally, I would love to see a new Continental Congress meet in Philadelphia to put the ineffective one we have on notice that if they don't do their job we have many here who will. Where has that spirit of liberty gone? Where has the sustained fire and passion for Democracy gone? In this clip from HBO's magnificen... more
