Michael Moore to release new movie for FREE!
Inspired by Neil Young and Radiohead, Michael Moore will release his new film online and for free.
The film, "Slacker Uprising," follows Moore's 62-city tour during the 2004 election to rally young voters. It will be available for three weeks as a free download to North American residents, beginning Sept. 23. An official announcement of the film is planned for Friday.
Moore said he considered releasing "Slacker Uprising" theatrically as "Michael Moore's big election year movie" as he did with 2004's "Fahrenheit 9/11," which was highly critical of President Bush.
Instead, Moore opted for a symbol of gratitude to his fans as he approaches the 20th anniversary of his first film, 1989's "Roger & Me."
"I thought it'd be a nice way to celebrate my 20th year of doing this," Moore said. "And also help get out the vote for November. I've been thinking about what I want to do to help with the election this year."
The 97-minute long "Slacker Uprising" will be the first major film to be released in such a way. Last December, "Jackass 2.5" was streamed online and for free, but that was only a collection of left over material from "Jackass 2." Companies like ClickStar, which Morgan Freeman co-founded, have made films still in theaters _ such as 2006's "10 Items or Less" _ digitally available for purchase or rental.
Experimentation in distribution has been more common in the music industry, where the Internet has significantly damaged traditional business models. Moore took notice when Radiohead last year released their seventh album, "In Rainbows," online with optional pricing. In 2006, Neil Young streamed his anti-war album "Living With War" for free before its standard release _ now a more common practice.
If history is any measure, "Slacker Uprising" could have made a decent sum in theaters. His last two films, "Sicko" ($24 million) and "Fahrenheit 9/11" ($119 million) are two of the three highest grossing documentaries ever. For now, Moore hopes "Slacker Uprising" will help spur young people to vote in November. After more than 20 million 18- to 29-year-olds cast ballots in 2004 (an 11 percent increase from 2000), he's hoping even greater numbers of "slackers" vote this year.
Moore readily acknowledges that this a film for Democrats.
"This film really isn't for anybody other than the choir," said Moore. "But that's because I believe the choir needs a song to sing every now and then." Inspired by Neil Young and Radiohead, Michael Moore will release his new film online and for free. ... more -

Donna Smith to Obama and McCain: You don't speak for this SiCKO
During every national election cycle at about this time in the big races, I start to want to scream into the great abyss of political hype flying around. "You don't speak for me. You haven't seen what it's like to live in America's real middle class for a long time," I want to thunder as loudly as they do their messages of kinship with me.
I am a middle class grandmother. I grew up in Illinois. I was raised to care about God and country. I may not have achieved a great level of renown, but I think I have just as much right to weigh in on this nation's future as those who claim to know me but just don't.
[...]
Let's talk healthcare, for example. And let's talk reality for middle class folks like me. This issue permeates so many different parts of my life. From where I work to where I shop, rising costs for healthcare invade not only my bottom line in wages and benefits but also every business and every product and every service I use.
I know gas prices matter too, but any wonk who claims to speak for me is lying if he or she fails to talk about what the costs of healthcare are doing in a much more insidious way. If today's price for a night in the hospital or an "extended" visit with my doctor was posted on every street corner like gas prices are, I dare say the conversation might shift. And while we're at it, let's post the cost each business paid for health insurance coverage for its employees. [...]
I watch my country's infrastructure crumble -- the potholes, the traffic jams, the weakened and old bridges. I worry about the gun violence our young people live with -- and I am married to a hunter, a man who loves guns used for sporting purposes. When I do get to fly, I am herded onto airplanes that may or may not take off on time or at all -- and I have no recourse for time lost, bosses angered or family members inconvenienced. I wonder if any of this will matter if the global warming issues overtake any of the momentary concerns and the planet does not survive our abuse.
And finally, I do love my country and our troops and my freedom. I am sad about our current world situation as I think about what World War II vets like my dad fought for and believed in. Are there times when war must be waged? Yes. But I am afraid we've completely screwed up our set of priorities and really do not like our warring for oil and world dominance while we send mosquito nets and missionaries into areas where tens of millions die enduring conditions we will not fight. That is not my middle class realty nor my values at work.
I am not safe in my homeland. I am bombarded by conditions over which I have no control that threaten my personal safety daily. Healthcare costs and all the deaths related to that crisis right here on American soil are evidence enough for me -- my personal safely is not being protected by anyone.
There are plenty of people in the middle class who could and should speak up during these troubled times. I just want those in the upper classes who claim they speak for me to stop it... tell me the truth for a change. You speak for whatever interest you find potentially profitable at the moment. But you do not speak for me.
I will speak for myself. You will not define which issues to rant about and impose on me. My daily life defines the issues for me. And as one of the middle class reality wonks in this nation, I can tell you I am pretty angry and pretty disgusted with all who claim to know better than I do what the world I live in is like. During every national election cycle at about this time in the big races, I start to want to scream into the great abyss of political ... more -
Madonna brings movie to Michigan
Pop singer Madonna has presented I Am Because We Are, her documentary about Malawi orphans, at the Traverse City film festival in northern Michigan.
The musician turned film producer was met at the screening by director and fellow Michigan native, Michael Moore. Madonna, who was born in Bay City in 1958, said it was "great bringing my movie to a place that I feel familiar".
"There's something poetic about coming back to the place where I used to come for holidays," she continued. Madonna was accompanied by her 11-year-old daughter, Lourdes, and the film's director, Nathan Rissman. Her husband, British filmmaker Guy Ritchie, was not present.
'Generous spirit'
Moore, who co-founded the film festival in 2005, said Madonna had "such an incredible heart and such a generous spirit".
"She does so much out of the glare of the lights to make the world a better place," the Bowling for Columbine director continued. The singer returned the compliment, saying she needed people like Moore in her life. "There aren't a lot of role models for us in the world," she said.
She also said the event in Traverse City was better than the Cannes Film Festival, "where nobody's speaking English". Pop singer Madonna has presented I Am Because We Are, her documentary about Malawi orphans, at the Traverse City film festival in nort... more -
With gas at $4-plus, some catch the bus and others miss the point entirely
With pump prices acting as strong a deterrent, Americans are putting the breaks on their driving habits. DOT Federal Highway Administration mileage figures released earlier this month show, "the sharpest yearly drop for any month in FHWA history."
Estimated vehicle miles on public roads in March 2008 fell 4.3% when compared to the same month last year, with Americans driving 11 billion fewer miles in total. It was the first time that March driving figure had declined since 1979.
With gas prices like daylight robbery, commuters are choosing to skip the pump and run –– to the nearest bus stop. The American Public Transportation Association reports that last year ridership reached levels not seen in 50 years, with 10.3 billion bus, trolley and train trips taken in 2007. Furthermore, they report that a staggering 35% of summer travelers say they are likely to use public transit to save on driving costs when visiting other cities.
All this is good news for the environment, but extremely bad news for car makers. New car sales dropped by 7 % in April; the seasonally adjusted sales total of 14.4 million vehicles was the worst in 13 years.
With car sales plummeting, car dealers are resorting to desperate measures to move vehicles. One Butler, MO dealer is offering a choice of $250 in gas or a free semi-automatic handgun with purchase. We're not sure why the handgun needs to be semi-automatic (how many people do Missouri drivers need to shoot in one go?), but so far it's by far the preferred option, with 80% of customers opting for a coupon which they can exchange for a gun once they've passed the require background check.
"It's a choice –– protection or gas," said Walter Moore of Max Motors. "We got high gas prices, theft, carjackings, innocent people getting hurt."
We could be wrong, but it seems like Walter’s customers aren’t the Prius-buying type. It's attitudes like these that make Walter's namesake Michael Moore so proud –– of Canadians. We're figuring Walter skipped Michael's anti-firearm flick Bowling for Columbine when it came out in theaters, but would like to think he might catch up with it on DVD since it notoriously features a bank which offered a similar bonus for new customers. Ultimately, the film showed that guns are about as bad for people as fossil fuels are for the planet. Again, we could be wrong, but we thought the end-game was to get rid of both.

Michael Moore announces new film
He says the film is really about what's happened inside the U.S. while the Bush administration has been "asleep at the wheel", busy waging war in Iraq. It sounds like vintage Moore and promises more of the kind of thing he delivered in Roger & Me as he is sure to go after some corporations he believes have had a free ride in the last eight years. Obviously he doesn't want to give too much away at this point as he is just getting into production and knows these companies will be warning employees to stay away from him. Fahrenheit 9/11: The sequel?
With his follow-up to "Fahrenheit 9/11," Michael Moore wants to examine America as an empire, study its standing since the Sept. 11 attacks and present revelations to surprise audiences as much as the first film did.
But he doesn't want to make a sequel.
"To just say it's a sequel is so wrong," Moore told The Associated Press on Friday at the Cannes Film Festival, where he met with potential international distributors for the film, due out in 2009.
The documentary announced this week at Cannes will be a broader chronicle than "Fahrenheit 9/11," which took President Bush to task over the terrorist attacks and the Iraq war.
"It would be easier and safer to make a sequel, if that's all it was, but this isn't about Bush. We all know this. Regardless of who the president is come November, we have a big mess, a big, big mess to be cleaned up, and I don't know whether it can be cleaned up," Moore said. "The toxicity of the spill may be so great that there's nothing we can do about it. If that's the case, where are we now as America and as Americans?"
"Fahrenheit 9/11" won the top prize at Cannes in 2004 and went on to top $100 million at the domestic box office, the only documentary to hit that mark.
Moore plans to keep details of the film to himself, saying he regretted talking too early about his health-care documentary "Sicko." Health insurers were able to mobilize against him, which "made it impossible for me to get in anywhere" for interviews, he said.
The new film, which doesn't yet have a title, is being financed by Overture Films, which is handling the U.S. release, and Paramount Vantage, which is overseeing international distribution. Michael Moore plans 'Fahrenheit 9/11' follow-up
Paramount Vantage and Overture films are teaming with Michael Moore for a sequel to his blockbuster documentary "Fahrenheit 9/11."
The companies will co-finance the project, with Overture getting domestic distribution and Paramount Vantage taking the film around the world.
"We are thrilled to be working with Michael again," say Chris McGurk and Danny Rosett, CEO and COO of Overture. "His fearless filmmaking has become an important catalyst for challenging mainstream thoughts and values regarding the important critical issues facing this country and the world. Everyone on the Overture team is delighted to be involved with Michael's exciting new film."
Paramount Vantage President Nick Meyer adds, "Michael is one of the most inspiring, innovative and thought-provoking filmmakers of our generation. With his unquestionable mark on our culture and politics, Moore is renowned and iconic within the international marketplace and we could not be more enthusiastic about this partnership."
While the industry trade papers are treating the new Moore film as a direct sequel to "Fahrenheit 9/11," which shattered all documentary box office records with its $119 million domestic take, the official press release says that the specifics of the film are being kept under wraps.
Moore's most recent film, 2007's health care doc "Sicko," failed to strike the same chord as "Fahrenheit," but its $24.5 million gross still has it placed as the third highest grossing documentary ever. Moore's "Bowling for Columbine" gives the director a third film on the list of the Top Five highest grossing docs.
Paramount Vantage will be launching the new unmade film into the international marketplace at this week's Cannes Film Festival.

Michael Moore lies again?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yVjP7Ems7rc
MOORE: That's right, most of Europe pays less than we do. That's not the way we're told in this country. We're told, oh, they pay all these horrible taxes; 40 percent of their income goes to income taxes. Actually, the French federal income tax is around 10 percent. That 10 percent covers everything, the road, the cops, the military.
Well He is only telling half the truth. My friend, John, sought out this flaw and informed me. I Googled "French pay 10% in taxes" and came to this site.
http://newsbusters.org/blogs/d-s-hube/2008/05/01/michae...
Michael Moore is only telling a half truth BIG SHOCKER there. But he wasn't lying. This is politics and this happens all the time. I myself have done this more and more when I debate.
For example:
I said in Mr. Martin's class (during my abortion debate) it can cost up to $30 thousand plus for adoption. That's only half true, even though I had all the stats. sitting behind me. I emphasized that little bit and no one challenged me on it. Even with Day and I, our license plate bill (for youth in government) I only gave one figure on the cost of license plates. Basically you're on a side and you say what's most effective to your side. If people are too stupid to "check the facts" and go with what you say then well you have pretty much beat them on something.
What do you think? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yVjP7Ems7rc ... more -
Film-maker Moore endorses Obama
The outspoken film-maker Michael Moore endorsed Barack Obama for the Democratic nomination on the eve of the Pennsylvania primary tomorrow, accusing Hillary Clinton of cynically trying to inject race into the contest.
In an angry posting on his website, Moore said he had intended to stay neutral in the Democratic contest but was led to speak out after last week's debate in Philadelphia when Obama was questioned about his pastor, the Reverend Jeremiah Wright.
Moore, who became famous for his cinematic rants against the gun industry, the Bush administration, and the US health care system, said he was disgusted when Clinton followed up on the moderators' line of questioning to Obama by mentioning Wright's contacts with the Nation of Islam leader, Louis Farrakhan.
The remarks, said Moore, were the final straw.
"I've watched Senator Clinton and her husband play this game of appealing to the worst side of white people, but last Wednesday, when she hurled the name "Farrakhan" out of nowhere, well that's when the silly season came to an early end for me. She said the "F" word to scare white people, pure and simple."
He goes on to even stronger language against Clinton. "Yes, Senator Clinton, that's how you sounded. Like you were nuts. Like you were a bigot stoking the fires of stupidity."
