    • Obama Lies About Signing Up for the Draft

Barack Obama told another whopper about his storied life on ABC’s “This Week” with George Stephanopoulos.

In one segment Stephanopoulos asked Obama if he ever considered joining the U.S. military as a youngster. Obama then goes on to say that he did when he was required to sign up for selective service in 1979 when he graduated high school.

One little problem… there wasn’t any requirement to sign up for Selective Service in 1979!

As Tom Blumer of NewsBusters.org and BizzyBlog.com notes, “Obama could not have registered upon graduation from high school as he claimed. His actually registered occurred roughly 45 days after… registrations took place in 1980. Obama’s statement, that ‘I had to sign up for Selective Service when I graduated from high school,’ is inarguably false.”

As any look into the facts will note, President Gerald Ford terminated the registration requirements on March 25, 1975 and Jimmy Carter didn’t reinstate the registration requirement until July 2 of 1980. Obama graduated from the private college prep school, Punahou School, in 1979.

The timing doesn’t quite work to make truth of what Obama told Stephanopoulos.

GEORGE STEPHANOPOULOS: One of our viewers wrote in—you talk about service—and asked, Brenda Godfrey Bryan, Marietta, Georgia: did you ever consider joining the armed services to protect and serve our country? If not, why?

BARACK OBAMA: You know, I actually did.

      STEPHANOPOULOS: When?

BARACK OBAMA: You know, I had to sign up for Selective Service when I graduated from high school. And I was growing up in Hawaii, and I had friend whose parents were in the military, there were a lot of Army, military bases there. And I always actually thought of the military as some ennobling and honorable option. But keep in mind: I graduated in 1979. The Vietnam War had come to an end. We weren’t engaged in an active military conflict at that point. So it’s not an option that I ever decided to pursue.

      Facts are stubborn things, eh?

    • McCain opposes gay adoption... we think?

From "This Week with George Stephanopoulos": In an interview with Senator McCain, regarding the senator's recent comments to the New York Times, Stephanopoulos asks, point-blank, whether McCain opposes gay adoption. So much for a straight answer.

For those of you who like to read quickly, rather than watch videos, I did my best to type out a transcript of the full exchange.

GS: What is your position on gay adoption? You told the New York Times you were against it -- even in cases where the children couldn't find another home -- but then your staff backtracked a bit. What IS your position?

JM: My position is, it's not the reason why I'm running for President of the United States. And I think that TWO-parent families are best for America.

GS: What do you mean by that, "it's not the reason why I'm running for President of the United States"?

JM: Well, I think that it's, uh, it is important for us to emphasize family values, but I think it's very important that we understand we have other challenges, too. I'm running for President of the United States because I want to help with family values. And I think family values are important, when we have two-parent families that are, uh, parents that are the traditional family.

GS: But there are several hundred thousand children in the country who don't have a home. And if a gay couple wants to adopt them, what's wrong with that?

JM: I am for the values that two-parent families, the traditional family, represents.

GS: So you're against gay adoption.

JM: I am for the values and principles that two-parent families represent. And I also do point out that many of these decisions are made by the states, as we all know. And I will do everything I can to encourage adoption, to encourage all of the things that keeps families together, including educational opportunities, including a better economy, job creation, and, and I'm running for president because I want to HELP families in America. And one of my positions is that I believe that, uh, that family values and family traditions are [protected? preserved?].

on ABC's This Week, with George Stephanopoulos, Stephanopoulos asked Sen. Graham if McCain's tax and healthcare policies are essentially "an extension or maybe an enhancement of the Bush policies." Sen. Graham answered, "Yeah, absolutely."

So much for distancing himself from Bush....

    • Massive backlash against ABC News' Pennsylvania debate marks a turning point

"Modern journalism’s lowest moment," noted one viewer online.

ABC News' April 16th Pennsylvania democratic debate was the most-watched contest to date with 10.7 million TV viewers. But here's what's fascinating: ABC News has received almost 20,000 (!) online comments about their handling of the debate as of Monday, April 21st. Most of them are high quality, coherent arguments, not YouTube scatology, and the vast majority are negative, critiquing Stephanopoulos and Gibson. Will we look back on this as one of the key moments that mainstream media fell apart?

      Some choice excerpts:

"The debate was a debacle for ABC news...Charlie and George's National Enquirer version of journalism is even more pathetic...they all assume that the "complainers" are Obama supporters. I, for one, am/was undecided. Aren't journalists suppose to refrain from making assumptions?”

"It was just plain insulting to voters who actually care about life and death issues, such as American troops dying abroad, veterans not receiving adequate care, the state of our planet, and our rapidly deteriorating economy...Everyone involved in staging this farce this should be ashamed. It was a disservice to the voters, the candidates, and frankly, to journalism itself."

"This debate was an utter embarrassment to the ABC news division and will continue to haunt you for many years to come...As a past avid viewer of your news programs, I will be boycotting the entire ABC news division and advise others to boycott them and Disney, as well as the news program's advertisers until substantial change is made to fix this situation."

"After watching that sorry display of a debate you might as well plan on having Charlie Gibson and George Sthephanopolus on Dancing with the Stars."

How is George Stephanopoulos an objective journalist when he tells a candidate he won't win while interviewing him? You don't see Tim Russert or Bob Schieffer doing that.
