Apparently the new macbooks, announced by Apple yesterday, now come fitted with special 'submersion sensors', which will know if your unlucky macbook has been subjected to untoward humidity - such as a quick plunge in the bath or down the toilet. Apparenly mobile phones have been fitted with these things for ages, and are used to catch people who try to lie about their damage claims for broken gadgets. • Austrian rightist Haider dead at 58

Austrian politician Joerg Haider, whose far-right rhetoric at times cast a negative light on the Alpine republic, has died in a car accident at age 58.

Police said the accident happened early Saturday morning in the south of the country when his car veered off the road near the city of Klagenfurt and overturned. He suffered severe injuries to his face and chest. It was not immediately clear if he died at the scene or in a hospital.

Haider, who was born Jan. 26, 1950 in Upper Austria, was governor of Carinthia and leader of the far-right Alliance for the Future of Austria at the time of his death.

"For us, it's like the end of the world," Haider's spokesman, Stefan Petzner, told the Austria Press Agency.

Austrian President Heinz Fischer described Haider's death as a "human tragedy."

In 1999, Haider received 27 percent of the vote in national elections as leader of the Freedom Party. The party's subsequent inclusion in the government led to months of European Union sanctions over Haider's statements, which were seen as anti-Semitic or sympathetic to Adolf Hitler's labor policies.

Haider had since significantly toned down his rhetoric. Over the summer, he staged a comeback in national politics and helped his Alliance for the Future of Austria significantly improve their standing in Sept. 28 national elections.

Haider and his supporters broke away from the Freedom Party in 2005 to form the new movement meant to reflect a turn toward relative moderation.

In particular, Haider wanted to distance himself from his rightist past, which included a comment in 1991 that the Third Reich had an "orderly employment policy" and a 1995 reference to concentration camps as "the punishment camps of National Socialism."

Haider, known for his charisma and intelligence, enjoyed tremendous popularity in Carinthia.

He is survived by a wife, two daughters and his mother, whose 90th birthday he and his family had planned to celebrate over the weekend.

    • Boar War: Wild hog kills hunter near berlin

An enraged and hungry wild boar attacked a hunter, who then bled to death.

In recent months wild boars, whom zoologists consider to be Germany's "most dangerous animal", have expanded their comfort zones with city centers now also falling under their reign of destruction. This year alone, boars chased a pair of policemen onto a balcony in a suburb of Frankfurt, sent a pensioner to the emergency room in Berlin, and broke into a home improvement store before being shot to death at the checkout counter in North Rhine-Westphalia.

Now the stakes are even higher as an unlucky hunter, a married 72-year-old man from Berlin, lost his life when trying to dispatch a wild beast spotted feasting on maize in a cornfield 70 kilometers outside Berlin.

By the time other hunters found the man, he was lying on the ground bleeding heavily from his knee. They called an ambulance but it was too late. The boar warrior had punctured a major artery and the 72-year-old sportsman bled to death.

    • 'Podestrians' pose new threat to road safety

A UK insurance firm has expressed concern over the rising number of 'Podestrians', or people who wander around wearing noise-cancelling headphones and MP3 players without paying attention to oncoming vehicles. Apparently these people account for 9% of minor accidents, with 62% of them being identified as kids or teenagers.

The image above comes from an Australian road safety campaign aimed at bringing awareness to music-loving pedestrians.

I certainly agree that not being able to hear oncoming traffic increases the chances of an accident, though I don't think listening to MP3 players is neccesarily dangerous - just if the volume's too loud or headphones block out all noise. All if it's a particularly engrossing album.

    • World's first double arm transplant patient

The world's only transplant patient who received two full arms said the feeling of being whole again was "indescribable".

Karl Merk, a German dairy farmer whose arms had been amputated after an accident involving a farm maize threshing machine, said he felt like a "whole man" again as he spoke for the first time since the operation in July.

When Merk lost his arms six years ago, he was found by a colleague as he lay bleeding to death, screaming: "Kill me, kill me!" But the man saved his life instead. Doctors at the teaching hospital of the Technical University in Munich then planned a world first: to transplant two arms at once.

The difficult operation was conducted over two days in July and involved a team of 40 surgeons and nurses working in two operating rooms removing the arms from the donor, who had died only hours before, and transplanting them to Merk, who had only been left with small stumps just below his shoulders following his amputations.

The medical team said that hand and lower arm transplants were still rare and that the Munich operation, by attaching an elbow joint as well as an upper arm, posed a greater challenge for the immune and circulatory systems.

    • Sawed off arm saved by sausage rolls

A gardener sawed off his arm in a freak chainsaw accident, but was fortunate enough to have a neighbour who saved the severed limb by putting it in a bag of sausage rolls.

John Stirling, 59, was cutting off branches in a tree in his garden in East Sussex, when he is thought to have slipped and sliced off his arm. Mr Stirling knocked on neighbour Steve Francis' door and told him: "Please help I've cut off my arm."

Shocked Steve, 49, said: "He wasn't screaming, he was as relaxed as can be. I didn't realise anything was wrong until I looked down and saw his arm was missing. I ran inside to call the ambulance and he sat outside on a stool. I came out and tied his arm up with a belt and towels, the ambulance people talked me through it. But through it all he sat there talking away like it was normal."

While paramedics were working on him Mr Francis put the arm in a plastic Tesco shopping bag. "I then put it in another bag with frozen pastries in to keep it cold," he added. The arm was cut off from below the elbow but surgeons may now be able to re-attach the limb.

    • Texting teen struck and killed by car in Polk County

POLK COUNTY — A teenager texting on his cell phone was struck and killed by an oncoming car Sunday.

Polk deputies say 18-year-old Christopher Cepeda and three friends were trying to cross US 27 shortly before 8 p.m., just south of the intersection on Legacy Park Boulevard.

His three friends saw a tan, 1998 Buick 4-Door traveling in the inside lane and stopped. Cepeda, who was texting on his phone, did not see the car and stepped into the roadway. The car’s bumper struck the victim, throwing him over the hood and into the windshield.

The driver, Denise Sottilaro, stopped immediately and called 911.

The victim was taken to Heart of Florida Hospital and later flown to Arnold Palmer Hospital where he died Monday afternoon.

An autopsy will be conducted by the Orange County Medical Examiner’s Office. Charges are not expected in this ongoing investigation.

    • Surgeons Reattach 6-Year-Old Girls Hand After Accident With Jump Rope

Surgeons were able to reattach the hand of a six-year-old girl from South Bay, Calif., after a freak accident involving a jump rope cut it off, nbc11.com reported Monday.

Erica Rix was riding in the back of her mother’s SUV and dangling her jump rope out of the window with the rope's slip knot around her wrist. The other end of the rope became tangled in the car’s axle, and as the rope tightened around Erica’s left hand, it eventually sliced the hand off.

"She was screaming and screaming, so I got out of the car and out the window that was cracked, (was) the remaining part of her hand," Erica’s mother, Allison Rix told the TV station. "I screamed and said, 'Where's her hand?'"

A nearby woman found the hand with the rope still attached.

A driver stopped and used his belt to create a tourniquet around the young girl’s arm before she was rushed to the hospital. Four surgeons spent 10 hours reattaching the hand.

    • 14 near death experiences: is this Britain's luckiest man?

Alec Alder, 90, might just be Britain's luckiest man! He has survived car crashes, war-time bombing and has even walked away after a fighter jet smashed into the side of his house.

The list of Alder's near death experiences is incredible:

1926 - Fell 15ft from an elm tree and landed on his stomach.

1929 - Collided head on with a car while cycling and landed on the bonnet.

1939 - Narrowly avoided certain death in Dunkirk when his company was changed at the last minute due to his wedding.

1940 - Bombed as he guarded an airfield in Kent during the battle of Britain.

1940 - Bombed again as he guarded a cable works in Gravesend.

1942 - A runaway gun carrier's engine stalled seconds before crushing him to death.

1942 - Almost hit by a low-flying fighter plane that crashed into his room inches above his head.

1943 - Avoided being destroyed in an area of sea riddled by German U-Boats after the engine on his ship cut out.

1944 - Threatened with being shot by a soldier in his platoon in Burma

1944 - Avoided being killed by the enemy in Burma after his leg was broken during a football match and he had to be taken to hospital.

1945 - Nearly sunk by a ferocious storm off Gibraltar when returning home from war.

1947 - Avoided being crushed in his car by a lorry in a journey to Blackpool after dashing clear just in time.

1977 - Survived a head-on road collision because the other clipped the kerb.

1997 - Nearly hit by doors that swung open on the lorry in front of him while driving from Wales to Stroud.

The grandfather of six, from Stroud, Glos, says he must be the "luckiest fella alive" and is amazed he has made it to such a ripe old age.

    • Texting Caused Deadly L.A. Train Crash?

Federal officials investigating a commuter rail collision that killed 26 people said they want to review cell phone records to determine if an engineer blamed for running a stop signal before the crash may have been text messaging at the time.

Coroner's assistant chief Ed Winter said a 26th death was reported to his office on Monday, of a man who died at County-USC Medical Center. His name was withheld pending notification of relatives.

With no answer on the cause of Friday's crash, a smaller number of commuters than normal returned to the rails Monday morning.

Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa boarded one of the morning's earliest trains.

"I want to dispel any fears about taking the train," the mayor said. "Safety has to be our number one concern, and while accidents can and do happen, taking the train is still one of the safest and fastest options for commuters."

The National Transportation Safety Board confirmed on Sunday that the engineer, who was killed in the crash, had failed to stop at the final red signal.
CBS Station KCAL correspondent Kristine Lazar reported exclusively that one minute before the crash, a teenager received a text message on his cell phone from the engineer, whom friends identified as Robert Sanchez.

The text message received told where Sanchez would be meeting another passenger train.

But train enthusiasts who knew Sanchez well doubt that he was to blame. They called their friend professional and caring. To a man, they said he would "never" have been reckless or unprofessional.

Another of Sanchez's friends, teenager Evan Morrison, told Lazar that Sanchez "was not the kind of guy who would run a red light."

When asked by KCAL to comment on the report, Metrolink spokesperson Denise Tyrell said, "I can't believe someone could be texting while driving a train."

KCAL said the teen was among a group of youths who befriended the engineer and asked him questions about his work.

      . . . . .

It was the deadliest passenger train crash since Sept. 22, 1993, when Amtrak's Sunset Limited plunged off a trestle into a bayou near Mobile, Ala., moments after the trestle was damaged by a towboat; 47 people were killed.

    • Cupid's Arrow Blinds Woman Driver

IN LOVE WITH A MAN IN UNIFORM - A woman who was stopped after nearly running over two people in her car said she couldn't concentrate because she was head over heels in love with an elusive police officer. A woman driver who almost ran over a pedestrian, narrowly avoided hitting a cyclist and then unwittingly drove onto a footpath told police it was all because of love. She said she couldn't concentrate because she was besotted with a mystery policeman she had been trying to locate ever since laying eyes on him weeks before.

Stopped by police after her string of traffic violations, the 29-year-old woman said she had fallen in love with an officer she had met, and could think of nothing but him. "The woman had approached the police for help five weeks before saying she had met a policeman and had fallen 'head over heels' in eternal love with him," police in the western city of Münster said in a statement. The police station tried to help her find him by putting a notice in the local police newsletter, which was published on Thursday.

"She immediately came and fetched it. When she was stopped she pulled it out and checked if either of the officers was her 'prince.'" They weren't. "The officers told her to regain a more earthly view of things and to leave her quest for love up to cupid and the police," the statement said. The woman was fined.

    • Road hog: Vegetarian driver suffers pig nightmare on motorway

The sight of a truckload of pigs headed for the sausage factory proved too much to bear for a German vegetarian woman who lost control of her vehicle as a result. Unfortunately, she crashed into another truck carrying pigs.

A vegetarian woman driving down a motorway in Germany was so traumatized at the sight of a truck loaded with pigs that she lost control of her vehicle and careered into another truck, which was also filled with pigs, police said.

"The woman found herself driving next to a large pig transport truck and the sight of the pitiful animals made her feel so sick that she jerked her steering wheel and started swerving," police in the western town of Gütersloh said in a statement released on Thursday.

"The result of her swerving was that the woman's van struck the side of another truck … which was also loaded with live pigs. The woman suffered little more than a fright but we were unable to ascertain anything about the state of the pig's health," police said.
