    • Stop limiting electric vehicles

A group spearheaded by the local automobile dealership EnVironmental Motors in Glendale, California is petitioning the Federal government to create a new vehicle classification. The Medium Speed Vehicle (MSV) Classification. Currently, the federal government limits electric cars capable of going 35-40mph to 25mph. Help us create the MSV class so these cars can be driven on more roads by more people to help offset the tons of carbon released into the air by gasoline vehicles.

While more Americans are seeking new transportation technology that is clean, green and electric, this new category could result in a five- to ten-fold increase of affordable (under $20K) zero-emission vehicles being driven on our nation's roads today.

Modern Electric Vehicles capable of going 35 to 40 miles per hour are currently available for sale, yet they are limited by Federal low speed vehicle (LSV) regulations to 25 miles per hour. People driving in Montana and Washington have modified these zero-emission vehicles to travel at 35 miles per hour under new state laws that permit a faster speed. That speed is opening up the market in those states as people find the new speed works for local trips and their second car uses.

As a recognized business offering consumers the option of driving 100% electric cars, EnVironmental Motors has become the lead sponsor to help formulate a new Medium Speed Electric Vehicle (MSEV) classification. As part of a joint effort with The MSEV Coalition consisting of at least eleven Electric Vehicle manufacturers and numerous advocates, the group recently submitted letters of request to The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration for rulemaking review.

These same vehicles are available throughout America, although our federal law has not been updated to reflect the latest innovations in transportation technology. Many customers are happy to have this choice available to them for all their local driving, as the actual energy costs are about 2-3 cents per mile.

Per Santa Monica Fleet Superintendent Rick Sikes, "We could replace more than 10% of our fleet with MSEVs, limited to 35 mph, without a decrease in service or operator acceptance."

EnVironmental Motors sells the ZENN luxury Neighborhood Electric Vehicle (NEV) which comes equipped with a solid aluminum alloy frame used for highway cars in Europe, along with a robust AC drive motor, heater and option for air conditioning. The ZENN is one of several cars that can satisfy the need for a zero emission 35mph second car right away - once the Federal Government removes the legal obstacles.

This is the natural progression for electric vehicles from golf carts at 15 mph to NEVs at 25 to around town cars at 35 mph. This would be easiest, fastest and most affordable way to get zero emissions vehicle on our streets says Russell Sydney, Coordinator for the Coalition.

To join the efforts and support the greening of our city streets, or for more information about the Medium Speed Electric Vehicle Coalition, call 310.450.7419 or email: Main@sustainableclub.org. For anyone who would like to learn more or enjoy a truly ZENN experience (the name ZENN is an acronym for Zero Emission No Noise), visit www.EnVironmentalMotors.com or contact EnVironmental Motors directly at 818.244.MYEV to schedule a test drive appointment.

PLEASE sign this and PASS IT ON. It's another step in the right direction, even if it was prompted by business.

    • Fuel Cell Powered Electronics | A New Use for Methanol

"As a source of power for cars, fuel cells have been a disappointment. For laptops and mobile phones, they are just about to take off

METHANOL is nasty stuff. Careless distillation in many a backwoods still has caused it to blind the imbibers of “alternative” alcoholic drinks. Yet it has its uses, and one of them may be to restore fuel cells to their oft-vaunted role as the power packs of the future—but with a twist. The main role that has been discussed for fuel cells over the past few decades is as replacements for the internal-combustion engine. Their actual use may turn out to be to provide power for portable electronic devices."

    • Obama addresses US mayors in Miami

Democratic nominee Senator Barack Obama was the keynote speaker at the luncheon for the US Conference of Mayors June 21st in Miami, FL. While the Mayors' issues and Obama's address were the issues and highlight of the day, there was a special group in attendance by invitation for whom the Senator's messages truly hit home. In the back of the luncheon hall was a gathering of high school students from Miami's Young Women's Preparatory Academy, the first single sex public school in the County.

While the Mayors listened intently to Obama's proposals to help their cities and towns with problems ranging from high energy costs brought on by Washington catering to Big Oil, to the effects of unchecked immigration, this attentive and polite group of young women focused on his comments related to issues they felt had a direct impact on them. Specifically, they were impressed with his dedication to education and commitment to expanding wireless access for all.

Isis Gottlieb-Guidance Counselor to the girls encouraged them to speak about what Obama's proposals meant to them. The girls said that his plans for helping schools and teachers suffering from budget shortfalls would have a direct impact on them. When schools are forced to reduce the number of textbooks to keep their buses on the road, education suffers. They also were most impressed with the Senator's focus on the Internet and wireless access. Many politicians today aren't of the "Tech Generation" and perhaps don't realize the potential of opportunities for learning and growth when wireless is more accessible. Senator Obama said that "surely the country that invented the Internet should be able to make access more widely available." He envisioned a time when all cities and towns would be able to offer wireless access to all schools and libraries as well as their communities.

Some highlights of Barack's speech included observations on how Washington has failed cities and towns when it comes to disaster relief, immigration problems, the effects of high energy costs on services and education and said that "neglect is not a policy. Communities should not be succeeding despite Washington but with a helping hand from Washington."

Obama added that while he respected and admired his opponent's service to his country, he would not be the partner to communities that is necessary going forward. He said McCain has different priorities than the average American. For example, he said, "McCain wants to give $2-trillion in tax breaks to big corporations and wealthy individuals at the same time that he opposes expanding funding to the COPS program and community development programs. That's just more of the same in Washington," he said.

    • EU to open anti-dumping probe into US biodiesel imports

BRUSSELS (AFP) — The European Union will on Friday open anti-dumping and anti-subsidy investigations into imports of biofuel from the United States, European sources said.

The move came after the European Commission investigated industry complaints that the US action was hitting Europe's biodiesel industry.

The European Biodiesel Board called for the investigation in April, complaining that the European market was being flooded with US exports of a 99-percent biodiesel blend, which can receive a subsidy of 300 dollars (192 euros) per tonne.

On top of the US aid, exports of the so-called B99 blend are also eligible for a subsidy in Europe as well.

    • The marvelous chicken-powered car

Who needs a tiger in their tank? Harold Bate, chicken farmer and inventor from Devonshire, England says that you can power your motor vehicles with droppings from chickens, pigs or any other animal of your choice... even with your own waste! To prove his statement is no idle boast, Harold has been operating a 1953 Hillman and a five-ton truck on methane gas generated by decomposing pig and chicken manure for years. He claims that the equivalent of a gallon of high-test gasoline costs him only about 3d and that the low-cost methane makes his vehicles run faster, cleaner and better than they operate on "store bought" fuel.

Detroit and the large petroleum interests keep saying it can't be done but a 62-year-old English inventor has already done it. Harold Bate, British chicken farmer and experimenter, has developed a small conversion unit that makes any ordinary automobile virtually pollution-free. What's more (and hang on to your hat for this one) the Bate converter can also cut your fuel, oil, sparkplug and other miscellaneous automobile operating expenses by a factor of ten! The Bate system accomplishes these amazing feats as naturally as a compost pile by recycling animal droppings and sewage into methane: a Colorless, odorless, flammable gas. This means that, as a bonus, Harold Bate's development just may go a long way toward safely and naturally reclaiming the mountains of waste with which "civilized man " seems determined to bury the planet.

Gasification Lecture and Demo: Thurs, June 12, 7:30-9:30PM
      Build Days: 4 Saturdays (June 14, 21, 28 and July 5), 11am - 7pm

Location: The Shipyard - 1010 Murray St, Berkeley, CA 94710

The main group project will be using the GEK kit to convert a Honda Accord to run on walnut shells. The goal is a polished and automated installation that is acceptable as a daily driver. Maybe even something that's more interesting to look at than the previous effort . Towards this goal, we will be developing air/syngas mixture automation mechatronics, condensate/steam reinjection systems and other automated sensing and control devices.

Along side the Honda Accord project, participants are encouraged to build their own GEK for personal projects. Maybe you want to convert a vehicle, generator, forge, lawnmover, hot water heater, or fire art project. Or maybe a racer for the Escape from Berkeley (by any non-petroleum means) rally. Now's your chance. All tools and help needed to assemble the kits will be provided during the weekend build days. You will need to buy at least the Level II form of the kit, but not any of the assemly options. The workshop is FREE for anyone who purchases the material kit.

The workshop begins with an evening talk and discussion on the science of gasification a survey of its design and social history. Both beginning and expert reactor assemblies will be presented, with pointers to further reading and current issues and opportunities in the field. Also included is a basic introduction to biochar / Terra Preta and the related pyrolysis reactors.

    • Airbus and Other Aviation Heavies Team Up to Develop Altenative Fuel

Airbus is jumping into the alternative fuel fray, partnering with Honeywell, International Aero Engines, UOP, and JetBlue to develop technology that would turn algae and vegetable oils into alternative fuel. Airbus is thinking/hoping that this technology could provide up to 30 percent of all jet fuel by 2030.

Each of the project's partners bring something to the table. Airbus is one of the world's largest commercial jet makers , so its involvement will help drive acceptance of the initiative. UOP, a gas and chemical processing company, already has some jet fuel expertise -- they've developed technology to convert natural gasses and oils to military jet fuel as part of a project funded by the US Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) -- and they say this technology could be modified for commercial jets.

As for the other partners in the project, International Aero Engines builds the engines that power many of Airbus' planes, Honeywell is providing its engine technology expertise, and Jetblue will be the ones that actually test potential fuels on the ground and in-flight.

The announcement from Airbus and friends is just the latest in a string of recent big-aviation-goes-green type news: a Boeing-produced biofuel was recently tested on a highly publicized Virgin Atlantic flight, and a Boeing/GE/Continental Airlines alternative jet fuel test is also forthcoming.

There's no denying that any effort to sink time and money into new fuel development is a good thing, but some environmentalists see the recent Virgin test as nothing more than a big publicity stunt designed to make the airline look good. They point out that any benefits generated by the use of jet biofuels would be completely offset by just one year of aviation growth at its current rates.

And it does seem that these types of announcements give the industry a chance to regurgitate the same set of environment-friendly soundbites. "Biofuels are the future, reducing greenhouse gas emissions, contrail formation, retc., etc.," says Airbus of the new partnership. “We believe this joint effort...has the potential to significantly decrease pollutants,” crows Honeywell. But for sheer loquaciousness, JetBlue's take on the project takes the cake, with the airline's CEO saying: "This has the potential to benefit every world citizen beyond those involved in our business."

That's a big promise. You guys better get on it.

Leave it to Honda, when American Car companies can't get their act together.

I did everything in my power to buy American for years. Finally one day I said enough is enough and I went out and got a HONDA.

Three years later. Three new ACCORDS later.

I am sold on the company.

Not one service visit. Not one problem. Great gas mileage and the 4 cylinders will flat out GO.

Will be buying another one and that is saying a great deal coming from me.

Would I rather buy a CHEVY, SATURN, FORD, YOU BET.

A Hydrogen fuel cell TRUCK maybe.

Agrichar is the term not for the biomass fuel, but for what is left over after the energy is removed: a charcoal-based soil amendment. In simple terms, the agrichar process takes dry biomass of any kind and bakes it in a kiln to produce charcoal. The process is called pyrolysis. Various gases and bio-oils are driven off the material and collected to use in heat or power generation. The charcoal is buried in the ground, sequestering the carbon that the growing plants had pulled out of the atmosphere. The end result is increased soil fertility and an energy source with negative carbon emissions. • Light an affordable commodity in off-grid areas ?

About 1.6 billion people worldwide depend on "fuel-based lighting" because they do not have access to the electric grid, usually burning kerosene for light in different types of lanterns. Besides being a very inefficient light source, kerosene lighting is expensive, dangerous and poses a health hazard for its users.

The first step in establishing a viable global solution for off-grid lighting is a pilot project. OSRAM has started this pilot around eastern Africa's Lake Victoria, addressing local fishermen and their communities. In April 2008, the first O-HUB in Mbita, Kenya, was inaugurated. Lake Victoria was chosen because the local fishermen fishing for sardines at night use kerosene lanterns.

The fishermen spend up to 70% of their income on kerosene, so they have a strong interest in efficient lighting.
