    • 37 injured in Iowa 4th of July fireworks misfire

A Fourth of July fireworks shell misfired in a northern Iowa town, sending a fireball skidding down a street into a crowd of spectators and injuring 37 people.

Most of the people treated after the Friday night accident in Charles City suffered minor injuries.

It appears there was a misfire involving 13 racks of firework tubes during the finale of the city-sponsored show, Assistant Fire Chief Dave Boehmer said Saturday.

The city of about 7,800 people is 125 miles northeast of Des Moines, near the Minnesota state line.

In other news, in Riverside, Ohio, a man lost part of his leg when fireworks went off inside his parked sport-utility vehicle, blowing the windows out.

    • No fireworks for 4th of July?!?!?

Those seeking the oohs and aahs of traditional Fourth of July fireworks could be sadly disappointed this year: Public displays and sales of boxed firecrackers are being canceled or scaled back across the nation, victims of a sluggish economy, wildfire fears and product shortages caused by a warehouse fire in China.

With Northern California already battling a string of wildfires, fire officials in Scotts Valley, south of San Jose, concluded that going ahead with the annual show would send the wrong message when residents have been asked to refrain from setting off even tiny sparklers in their backyards.

Fire Chief Mike McMurry, who has worked in Scotts Valley for 31 years, could not recall another time when dry weather snuffed out the show. "It's all about the severity of the conditions right now," he said.

Aside from the fire danger, local governments are also short of money because of the slumping economy. Fireworks supplies are petering out, too, because China is running short of ports from which to ship the dangerous cargoes abroad.

In Texas, four parched counties obtained emergency declarations prohibiting the sale of personal fireworks. In Massachusetts, several towns said fewer donations from corporate sponsors made it too expensive to mount local celebrations.

The average aerial display lasts about 15 minutes and costs $10,000. Larger cities spend about $100,000 for bigger shows.

    • Firework boss charged over deaths

A firework depot owner and his son have been charged with manslaughter over the deaths of two firefighters.

Geoffrey Wicker, 49, and Brian Wembridge, 63, died tackling a blaze at Festival Fireworks near Ringmer, East Sussex, on 3 December 2006.

Twelve other people were injured in the explosions and blaze, including nine firefighters and a police officer.

Martin Winter, 50, and Nathan Winter, 23, have been bailed to appear at Lewes Magistrates' Court on 18 June

,,,,,,,,,It is a shame this happened especially to such an award winning firm. They provided the fireworks to Sydney for the millenium celebrations. They have supplied the various Lewes Bonfire societies one of which Cliffe has won international awards. But it seems that sloppy storage and slack procedure led to an event where firefighters lost their lives.
