Sex with trafficked women to be criminalised
A clampdown on kerbcrawlers and men who pay for sex with women who have been the victim of trafficking was launched today by Jacqui Smith.
Announcing at the Labour Party conference the Home Secretary aims to make it an offence to pay prostitutes who have been forced into the sex trade.
She went on to pledge new police powers to close brothels for three months. At present they can only shut them if there is evidence of drug abuse or anti-social behaviour. She also signalled that ministers would tighten regulations for lap-dancing clubs amid fears that local authorities have too little power to restrict where they open and how they operate.

Brothel Story Gets Spanish Politician In Hot Water
MADRID (Reuters) - A Spanish politician's public description of how he lost his virginity in a brothel has angered his female counterparts, who accused him of encouraging prostitution.
Miguel Angel Revilla, head of the government of the northern region of Cantabria, told a television interviewer earlier this week that he had paid the first time he had sex at the age of 18.
Female members of the regional parliament from the opposition conservative Popular Party were outraged. "As the head of the regional government, he should be an example for the young people of Cantabria," they said in a communique.
"Instead he encourages them to pay for their first sexual experience."
Thursday, Revilla, a member of a regional party, accused his critics of hypocrisy and said they were unable to find matters of substance on which to attack him.
"There are major problems which need to be addressed now, not what a poor 18-year-old did," said Revilla, who is now 65, adding: " Ninety-nine percent of Spanish men did it back then." County dims red light, shuts last legal brothel
Authorities in central Taiwan have turned off the red light at the county's last legal brothel after the death of its pimp aged 87, newspapers said on Friday.
Ai-Le was the last legal brothel in Nantou county in central Taiwan, and police revoked its permit because the 48-year-old business could not be transferred, the Liberty Times reported.
Prostitution has been illegal in Taiwan since 1997, and licensing of new brothels stopped in 1974, but isolated illegal brothels can be found all over the island. Brothels licensed prior to 1974 were allowed to keep operating.
The closure effectively leaves Ai-Le's two prostitutes, aged 40 and 50, jobless, the paper added.
A photo in the newspaper shows Ai-Le as a building with a pink flower-print facade, rimmed by a tattered roof.
"Actually, with this sort of thing, there's no real loss," township government Secretary-General Liang Wen-teh told Reuters. "The brothels may have legal permits, but that doesn't mean all the people inside are legal." Spend $300 at the brothel, get a $50 gas voucher!
Clients of the Shady Lady Ranch will get a $50 gas voucher if they fork out $300 at the brothel in Beatty, Nevada, 130 miles northwest of Las Vegas. The $50 rebate would roughly cover the cost of a round trip drive from Las Vegas to the ranch.

Sydney brothels see boom during Pope's visit
As Sydney prepares for a visit by Pope Benedict XVI and 225,000 young pilgrims, the city's brothels are readying themselves for an expected surge in demand for sex.
"The World Council of Churches, when they had their congress in Canberra back in the 1990s, was the best business period ever", says Sydney brothel manager.
The Eros Association, Australia's adult industry group, said sex shops and brothels across Sydney are expecting "huge turnover" during World Youth Day.
"We know the kind of people who visit prostitutes and adult shops, many of them do it because of their own personal repression," Eros spokesman Robbie Swan told AFP. "And often it's because of religion. Our industry is the forbidden fruit industry."

"Brothel bus" makes last stop in Miami Beach
A "brothel bus" that detectives said cruised Miami Beach offering lap dances and drinks has taken its last ride, police said on Wednesday.
Riders were offered oral sex for $100, according to Miami Beach police who impounded the limousine bus and arrested its operator early on Sunday.
The sleek black bus cruised the South Beach neighborhood popular among tourists and club-goers, offering rides and unlimited drinks for $40. Aboard, undercover detectives said they found a fully stocked bar and several young women who stripped down to reveal G-strings stuffed with cash and offered to perform sex acts.
Suspected operator Christine Morteh, 29, was arrested on charges of offering to commit prostitution, transportation for the purpose of prostitution and operating a business without a license. She was released from jail on $5,000 bond.
