Myth of the Delta blues
Marybeth Hamilton's In Search of the Blues recasts the elevation of the raw, "primitive" blues sound as a form of American orientalism. Hamilton deconstructs the myth of the solitary Delta-blues drifter, but ultimately focuses on the collectors and musicologists who idealized that lonesome figure. After this year's Frankfurt Book Fair closed up shop, a reporter called Rowohlt Verlag in Hamburg to find out if a book in its catalogue called "Ich Nicht" had found an English-language publisher.
The answer was no. The woman from the foreign rights department said it was a shame.
Agreed. Published in Germany 13 months ago, "Ich Nicht" is a memoir by the late Joachim Fest, author of the best-known German study of Hitler and a co-publisher of the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung. It describes his father, his family and growing up in Nazi Germany. Free Classic Style Guide
Even though it was first published in 1918, The Elements of Style, by William Strunk, Jr., still is considered by many to be the bedrock upon which all proper writing is created. The fine folks at bartleby.com, a great resource for all of you writers out there, have it on their site--for free. It's short, sweet, and to the point, like all good writing.
Still, the number one rule in my book is to write in a way that will make sense to your audience. Clarity trumps the rules. Take Winston Churchill's legendary response to being called out for ending a sentence with a preposition. As one version goes, he wrote, "This is the sort of English up with which I will not put."
