Messages from Earth sent to distant planet by Bebo
Messages from Earth – including a photo of George W Bush chosen to illustrate evil - have been sent to a distant planet that could be home to intelligent life.
The 501 notes, pictures and drawings were chosen by members of Bebo, the youth-orientated social networking site.
A digital time capsule was beamed in a high-powered radio wave in the direction of Gliese 581c, an "Earth-like" planet 20.5 light years away, from Ukraine's National Space Agency on Thursday morning.
The message flew past Mars within four minutes of being broadcast from the gigantic RT-70 radio telescope, but won't reach its destination until 2029.
It includes images of landmarks such as the London Eye and Edinburgh Castle, along with pictures of famous faces including Hillary Clinton and television presenters Richard and Judy.
There are also hundreds of notes written by Bebo members about their lives, ambitions and views of Earth. The messages included in the digital capsule were selected by an online vote.
One reads: "I wish I could be alive to see the day contact between the two worlds is made, I've been born way too early."
Others took a less serious approach, with many using their messages to pay tribute to their favourite celebrities. One message simply reads: "Best thing about Earth. George Sampson", in reference to the Britain's Got Talent winner.
The image of Mr Bush was chosen by Gillian Anderson, the X-Files star who was one of several celebrities involved in the project. She selected a picture of Barack Obama to illustrate goodness.
Pop band McFly chose to send a message praising singer Cheryl Cole's "perfect body".
Oli Madgett, who has been running the A Message From Earth project for Bebo, said he hoped that any aliens living on Gliese 581c would be impressed with the the notes
"We've spent years developing this, and I'm really pleased we've reached this stage," he said.
"Over half a million people have got involved and been really enthusiastic about uploading their messages onto Bebo, which has been great to see.
"I think it has really captured people's imaginations and made them think about our own planet Earth and humanity's impact upon it. I hope whoever's out there is impressed by what Earth has to offer."
Gliese 581c, which was discovered last year, has a radius that is 1.5 times the Earth's. Scientists have estimated that its average temperature is between 0 and 40 C, meaning that water would exist in a liquid state – one of the essential ingredients for life as we know it. Messages intended for intelligent alien life have been sent to a planet 20 light years from Earth.
Some 501 photos, drawings and text messages, collected through a competition by social networking site Bebo, were transmitted on Thursday by a giant radio-telescope in Ukraine normally used to track asteroids. The beamed messages will be sent 120 trillion miles into space to a target planet chosen as it is thought capable of supporting life. Topics submitted ranged from the environment, politics and world peace to family relationships and the sender's first kiss.

UFOs 'have been here since 1947', expert claims
Philip Mantle, editor of UFO Data Magazine, is set to unveil findings at an international conference this month that allegedly prove that UFOs exist and have been on Earth since 1947.
He investigated the site in Roswell, New Mexico where many people believe there was an alien crash landing, analysing rock, earth and vegetation. The area is surrounded by charred trees and bushes and a mysterious blue substance that dribbles down rocks.US physician Dr Ronald Rau said in the 1940s high levels of radiation pointed to a ship landing there in the 1940s.
Mr Mantle said: "A good friend of mine Ed Gerham first found the site and I flew over as soon as I could. It was a real find and as soon as I arrived there I knew what a special and peculiar place it was. There is nothing around it for around 70 miles, it is literally in the middle of nowhere. Us Brits really have beaten the Americans at their own game and it is really great that we have done that. It really is revolutionary for the UFO world."

Most interesting UFO encounters
Encounters of the Third Kind, E.T., aliens… these words bring up images of flying saucers and little green men with big ears. For years, we have been hearing of other life forms in our universe which visit our planet from time to time. Discovery Channel eyewitness, UFO over Mexico City, 2008
It's the best UFO picture I ever saw from Mexico and more importantly the event witnesses included Discovery Channel camera crew. Later the picture which was clicked by Carlos Avila who took the snap shots with his cell phone of Nararit Mexico City who made the interview with Jaime Mausan as well.

Earth Hot Spots Spark Alien Ideas
Scientists often have a reputation for working in stuffy laboratories, cut off from the world around them. But this certainly isn't the case at the Centre for Geobiology, University of Bergen, Norway.
The center has operated two summer cruises thus far in which researchers embarked on voyages to study conditions on the ocean floor. Using state-of-the-art technology, including a remotely operated vehicle, the scientists have discovered a new field of deep-sea vents, one of the most northerly in the world. [This discovery was reported by LiveScience in July.]
Creatures living around these "black smokers" show just how tough life on Earth can be, and hint that organisms on other worlds may be able to thrive in very hostile environments.
Life on the ocean floor
Scientists used to think that life on Earth was always based on ecosystems with photosynthesis — making food and energy from sunlight — as the foundation. Dive deeper than 656 feet (200 meters) and you'll be lucky to see any light at all — below 3281 feet (1000 meters), there is none. Amazingly, researchers have found organisms there, generally referred to as "extremophiles" (as they exist in extreme environments), often thriving despite the harsh conditions.
Just how unforgiving are environments deep in the ocean?
Creatures living 1968 feet (600 meters) deep endure crushing pressures around 60 times more powerful than at sea level. But that is only one of the problems they face. The temperature on the sea floor is very low, averaging about 39 F (4 C). This changes abruptly around hydrothermal vents, where temperatures can suddenly soar up to 752 F (400 C).
These vents, like the ones discovered during the research cruise, actually create havens for life despite the scorching heat. Creatures that live in hot environments are called thermophiles, which means "heat loving." They're perfectly happy on the outskirts of vents, where the temperature is around 122 F (50 C). Another group of organisms are known as hyperthermophiles. They live up to this impressive name by thriving at temperatures up to 248 F (120 C). Many chemicals spewed out at the vents are toxic to more common forms of life, but some exteremophiles are so hardy that they actually can use these chemicals for food and energy!
Scientists take to the seas
Elinor Bartle is the Centre for Geobiology's Information Officer. She was part of the Centre's team aboard the newest, largest and most advanced research ship in the Norwegian fleet. After sailing for two days, they reached the first study site off the west coast of Norway. Says Bartle, "Each leg [of the trip] involved a group of around 25 researchers, technicians and public outreach personnel in addition to the ship's crew. The group was international with representatives from a number of international partner institutions."
Their main mission was mapping the sea floor, hunting for areas of interest like elusive vents. They also collected rock samples that could provide clues about the local geology.
The researchers found the black smokers on mineral deposits that may be among the largest ever discovered, having been built up over the course of 100,000 years. An entire ecosystem surrounds these newly-discovered vents, using chemosynthesis for energy. Instead of light being the basis for energy, chemicals from the vents supply the foundations for life. Samples of the creatures were collected to be studied, and the hope is that they will help us gain better understanding of extremophile life.

Major Announcement regarding October 14 sighting

Originally it was believed that this would be taking place on October 14, and that it would be visable in the southern US states. Alien Polar Bear Discovered in Japanese Zoo
Green-colored polar bears are drawing questions from puzzled visitors at a Japanese zoo.
Three normally white polar bears at Higashiyama Zoo and Botanical Gardens in central Japan changed their color in July after swimming in a pond with an overgrowth of algae.
The sight of green polar bears has prompted many questions from visitors concerned about whether the animals are sick or carrying mold, zoo official Masami Kurobe said Sunday.
High temperatures during the months of July and August, and less-frequent water changes because of the zoo's conservation efforts caused an algae growth in the bear pond and safety moat.
The bears are expected to return to their natural color when the algae growth subsides in November, Kurobe said.

Billion-dollar European Probe Set for Asteroid Encounter
From the report: Far from Earth, a robot spacecraft has been prodded from deep slumber to make a rare encounter with an asteroid, the intriguing orbital debris that could offer clues into the making of the Solar System.
he pride of the European Space Agency (ESA), the probe Rosetta has been ordered out of hibernation four and a half years into a 10-year trek that will take it into the dark chill of deep space.
Rosetta is due to rendezvous in 2014 with Comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko, sending down a refrigerator-sized lab to examine its crusty surface.
But its 6.5-billion-kilometre (4.06-billion-mile) odyssey will be interrupted on Friday, when the craft will get down to some serious science as it zooms through the asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter.
Some 360 million kilometres (225 million miles) from home, Rosetta will carry out a flip to let its array of cameras and scanners snatch what could be a stunning view of a 10-kilometer (six-mile) -long space rock called (2867) Steins.
It will aim to get unprecedented high-resolution data of Steins' shape, size and spin, and maybe also tease out clues about its density and composition.
These could add useful knowledge about how asteroids -- hypothesised as primordial rubble left from the building of the Solar System -- weather during their aeons in orbit, said Rosetta's mission manager, Gerhard Schwehm.
"It's an E-type [asteroid], which is a silicate asteroid with a dark surface, and has not been looked at before from a spacecraft," he told AFP.
And experts in monitoring space rocks that are a potential threat to Earth will also be looking closely, said Schwehm.
"There's a lot of scientific interest in asteroids as primitive objects, but there's also interest in them as hazards, as Near-Earth Objects," he said.
"It's always useful to see their different composition, shape and size. By looking at them close-up and then comparing them with ground-based data, you can see how your classification and measurement systems perform."
At the closest point, expected at 1858 GMT on Friday, the craft will flash past Steins at a distance of 800 kms (500 miles) and with a speed of 8.6 kms (5.2 miles) per second, or 30,720 kph (19,200 mph).
Rosetta is due to carry out a second asteroid flyby, skimming past a 100-km (62-mile) behemoth called 21 Lutetia in July 2010.
Costing a billion euros (1.45 billion dollars), Rosetta is the most ambitious mission ever undertaken by ESA.
The project was approved in 1993 and launched in 2004 from ESA's base at Kourou, French Guiana.
Since then, the spacecraft has looped twice around the Earth and once around Mars, using planetary gravity as a slingshot to help it build up speed.
A third gravitational "assist" by Earth is due in November 2009.
If all goes well, Rosetta will meet up with Churyumov-Gerasimenko in May 2014 and then send down a lander, known as Philae, that will anchor to the comet's surface and analyse samples in a tiny onboard lab.

Oct 14, 2008 - Something strange in the skies?
This video predicts that on October 14, 2008 a 2,000 mile long craft will appear in the skies for a period of three days in such a way as to prove to us the existence of other life forms in the Universe. It sounds like it may happen over Alabama?

Radio signals detected for the first time, from beyond our solar system.
Scientists in South Africa have detected radio signals from beyond the solar system for the first time – prompting a wave of excitement over who, or what, might have sent it. The signal is the most significant of its kind since radio telescopes started operating in the 1960s.
The discovery was made by the Indlebe Radio Telescope at Durban’s Technology University.
A strong radio signal, possibly of alien origin, was detected at around 21:14 local time on July 28. It came from Sagittarius A, the centre of the Milky Way Galaxy, approximately 30,000 light years away.
The received data will shortly be made available to experts who can use it to create a graph.
Project leader Stuart MacPherson said he and his students were amazed when they realised the telescope had picked up a signal.
“We had made significant changes to the receiver to increase its sensitivity,” he said. “When we went in that morning to check the data, we found that it had detected a source. It’s unbelievable. It’s definitely a great relief for us because now we know that the radio telescope works.”
However, as the hardware used in the radio telescope has been designed by students and constructed on campus, the receipt of the signal still needs confirmation.
The Indlebe project, which takes it name from the Zulu for ‘ear’, was initiated in 2006. It uses a highly sensitive radio receiver to detect extra terrestrial radio sources.
