    • EPA Cracks Down On Polluting Lawnmowers

Gasoline-powered lawnmowers that are a big cause of summertime air pollution will have to be dramatically cleaner under rules issued Thursday by the Environmental Protection Agency.

The long-awaited regulation requires a 35 percent reduction in emissions from new lawn and garden equipment beginning in 2011. Big emission reductions are also required for speedboats and other recreational watercraft, beginning in 2010.

The reductions will be the equivalent of removing one out of every five cars and trucks on the road, according to Bill Becker, executive director of the National Association of Clean Air Agencies.

EPA said approximately 190 million gallons of gasoline will be saved each year when the rules take effect, and more than 300 premature deaths prevented annually.

"These standards help fight smog in our neighborhoods and waterways as we continue to improve the environmental landscape," said EPA Administrator Stephen L. Johnson.

The regulation had been delayed for years by opposition from Sen. Kit Bond, R-Mo., who took up the cause of small-engine manufacturer Briggs & Stratton Corp., which builds many of its engines in Missouri. The final rule Thursday was issued more than a year after the draft rule came out in April 2007.

EPA estimated the cost of implementing the reductions at $236 million a year, which will likely make its way to consumers in the form of more expensive lawnmowers and other machines.

Industry groups said exact figures were difficult to calculate, but the California Air Resources Board has estimated that walk-behind mowers would cost 18 percent more under the new regulation, while the price of commercial turf care mowers would rise about 3 percent.

New Agency Regulations Require 35% Reduction In Emissions By 2011

"It's been an undertaking," said Kris Kiser, vice president of public affairs at the Outdoor Power Equipment Institute, Inc. "Challenging, but again, fair and achievable and it's the right thing to do."

Environmentalists welcomed the regulation, which applies to lawn care engines under 25 horsepower and to a full range of gas-powered personal watercraft. The rule requires a 70 percent reduction in emissions from recreational watercraft.

"These new clean air standards will reduce dangerous smog pollution from high-emitting gasoline engines while helping to cut costs at the gas pump," said Vickie Patton, the Environmental Defense Fund's deputy general counsel.

The reductions on lawn mower emissions will probably be accomplished by adding catalytic converters that reduce pollution from exhaust but add cost.

Some in industry resisted the change, and Briggs & Stratton found a vocal champion in Bond. He and fellow Appropriations Committee member Sen. Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif., spent years sparring over the issue after California sought EPA permission to implement its own small engine controls in 2003.

    • Edinburgh Festival Fringe (2007) Extended Scenes

In August 2007, I went around Edinburgh during the Festival Fringe with my Hi8 camera capturing the 2007 events. As I'm a student, I could not afford to go to events such as the international festival so produced my own program of events which were all free. The Fringe has started up another scheme called Free Festival which has a website displaying a list of shows which all cost nothing. On my festival trips, I went to the Royal Mile for watching street performers, attended the Fringe Sunday based in the meadows, the International Game Festival and watched a musical display in Edinburgh's Botanic Gardens. http://www.edfringe.com

    • Edinburgh Mini Tattoo (2007) Extended Part 7 of 7

In August 2007, I took my Hi8 camera out again to film the annual mini tattoo over three days capturing the musical experience of the event and I now present it to the everyone in the world. The Mini Tattoo is an annual fixture in Princes Street Gardens, Edinburgh next to the Ross Bandstand. The Mini Tattoo is as it's name suggests a mini version of the main show that is staged at Edinburgh Castle. I put a lot of effort into making this film and it took a long time to edit. Here is the Director's Cut which is ten minutes long and captures the best moments of the mini tattoo, enjoy.

    • Music In The Botanics (2007)

During the filming of my Festival Fringe event documentary, I went along to Edinburgh's Botanical Gardens, a beautiful setting for a break away from the business of the town. The East African Zawoses Family played to an audience for about an hour with a delightful mix of music performed unusual instruments. I really enjoyed their music and would love to see them play again. My camera had some colour bleed problem during the shoot which I cannot explain. It may have been the tape but cannot work out what happened that day. It was a short while after the cavalcade where my camera shut off due to the rain.

    • Cringe Diary: Bad Summer Fashion Recap

Your dear old Auntie may have told you that the road to hell is paved with good intentions. The Cringe Diary would like to think that the road to hell is paved with bad taste. Of course we think fashion should be fun, daring, and expressive, but there is a big fat line between the stylish and the tawdry. The following is a recap of the most cringe-worthy summer fashion trends for 2008. Let's hope they don't rear their ugly little heads ever again, and in the meantime, tell us...

Which 'trend' makes you cringe the most?

      A. Shutter shades- these must come with magical powers like x-ray vision. That would explain their popularity.

      B. Fitflop gladiator sandals- I love the gladiator footwear trend, but the Fitflop's spin on the idea suddenly makes Crocs look appealing.

C.The peach backpack- this did not become a summer must-have, but is the perfect example of how the recycling trend has gone too far.

      D. Ripped denim- there is something instantly skanky about a pair of torn ripped denim shorts.

    • We're All Going On A Summer Holiday (1990's)

This is a photo video which I compiled from old family photos stored in my attic's drawers. I aim to make many more of these in the future at various points. If my memory serves me right, these photos were taken in Skegness, Gullane amongst others which I may not remember. The music used is by Kevin MacLeod who specializes in providing the public with royalty free music for their videos. I look about 10 in some of these slides. Summer holiday was a highlight for me as a child and every July, my family would head off down to the south of England. We could never afford going abroad so frequently went to holiday camps such as Butlins and Haven which were good when we were little bairns.
