Ben Hoffman heads over to Six Flags to check out a sneak peek of "Nintendo's Wario Land: Shake it!" and witnesses an epic battle for the title of "Wario Land Champion."

The infoMania Tech Report is a weekly segment where technology guru Ben Hoffman takes a look at the newest tech products, gadgets and video games. It has been called “the funniest tech show on the web.” (No source for that quote is available at this time. In fact, there’s a good chance it was made up.)

infoMania is a half-hour satirical news show that airs on Current TV. The show puts a comedic spin on the 24-hour chaos and information overload brought about by the constant bombardment of the media. Hosted by Conor Knighton and co-starring Brett Erlich, Sarah Haskins, Ben Hoffman, and Sergio Cilli, the show airs on Thursdays at 10 pm Eastern and Pacific Times and can be found online at current.com/infomania.

Well it seems Japanese girls dressed as French maids are still all the rage in Japan, and now you can even play Wii Fit with one - you know, the game with the balance board that requires all that leaning back and forth..

The owner of the Akihabara's Refresh Club, which provides the, err, service, says that, "playing Wii Fit by yourself is lonely. But here, playing along with a maid makes exercising enjoyable."

Well it's certainly one of the more nerdy fetishes I've come across in a while...

    • Nintendo Wii patent infringement

"The U.S. International Trade Commission has agreed to look into Hillcrest Laboratories' allegations that Nintendo infringed Hillcrest's patents in making its popular Wii video game, the ITC said on Wednesday.

Hillcrest has accused Nintendo of infringing four patents to make the top-selling Wii game console. Hillcrest made the filing to the ITC, which has the power to bar products such as the Wii from the United States if they are made with infringed technology.

Nintendo said that it respected the patents of other companies, and did not infringe on Hillcrest's intellectual property. "Nintendo intends to vigorously defend this action," it said in a statement.

      Hillcrest had no immediate comment."

    • Poll: 97% of Kids play video games - Yikes!

CHICAGO (AP) - Katherine Graden doesn't really like shoot-'em-up video games. She prefers games on her Wii system that test her fitness and agility—the ones her guy friends tease are her "sissy games."
"I'm like, `Fine! Go play your violent games. I'll stick with mine,'" the high school freshman from Chicago says, chuckling.

It's a common scenario, according to a new national survey from the Pew Internet & American Life Project that illustrates just how ingrained games have become in youth culture.

The survey found that while young Americans don't necessarily play the same thing, nearly all of them—girls included—play video games of one kind or another.

And they don't just play by themselves. Nearly two-thirds play video games to socialize face-to-face with friends and family, while just over a quarter said they play with Internet friends.

"It shows that gamers are social people," says Amanda Lenhart, a senior researcher at Pew who led the report on the survey. "They communicate just as much. They spend time face-to-face, just as much as other kids. They e-mail and text."

The survey, released Tuesday, combined the telephone responses from a nationally representative sample of 1,102 young people, ages 12 to 17, and their parents. Performed from November 2007 through February of this year, and partly funded by the MacArthur Foundation, it had a margin of error of three percentage points.

Among other things, the survey found that:

—Ninety-seven percent of young respondents play video games. That's 99 percent of boys and 94 percent of girls, with little difference in the percentages among various racial and ethnic groups and incomes. In fact, 7 percent of those surveyed said they didn't have a computer at home, but did have a game console, such as Sony Corp.'s PlayStation, Microsoft Corp.'s Xbox or Nintendo Co.'s Wii.

—They play often. When surveyed, half of the respondents said they had played a video game the previous day.

—Their games of choice are as diverse as their tastes in music or TV. Eighty percent of respondents play five or more different game genres, with racing, puzzles, sports and action the most common. Favorites were "Guitar Hero," "Halo 3," "Madden NFL," solitaire and "Dance Dance Revolution."

—Young people are routinely able to get their hands on games that are rated "M" (for mature) or "AO" (adults only). Three-quarters of parents who were surveyed said they "always" or "sometimes" check the ratings on their kids' games. And yet, half of boys who were questioned listed a game with an "M" or "AO" rating as one of their favorites, compared with 14 percent of girls.

Regardless, Pew researchers said they want to steer clear of depicting video games as "good" or "bad," says Joseph Kahne, a study co-author and dean of the education school at Mills College in California.

He noted, for instance, that even games with violent content, such as "Halo," provided "more than average opportunities for players to help one another."

Kahne also looked at games' effect on civic engagement, anything from political involvement to raising money for charity. He found that those who spent the most time playing video games weren't any less likely to be involved in their communities.

The survey did, however, find that those who played games in face-to-face social settings were more likely to say they were committed to civic participation.

Mimi Ito, an anthropologist who studies the use of new media, said more research is needed to explain this phenomenon. But she speculates the ties that gamers make with "real-life local friends" stimulate civic engagement.

"Gaming is the reason to get together—but they're probably talking about other things," says Ito, who's based at the University of Southern California's Annenberg Center of Communication.

    • Warrior Quest Relaunched

Since its re-launch two weeks ago Warrior Quest, a free-to-play online RPG, has seen its console audience grow to surpass its already substantial PC and Mac following. Lead by PlayStation 3 gamers, console players have been logging on to Warrior Quest in record numbers, far surpassing the number of players accessing the game from home videogame consoles in any preceding month. Following closely behind PlayStation gamers, Warrior Quest has also developed a strong audience among Wii owners who, like PS3 gamers, can access Warrior Quest through their console’s internet browser.

Warrior Quest is RPG designed for casual and expanded audiences that revolves around card collection and turn based battles. Online leader boards allow gamers to submit their scores and see where they stand in the game’s worldwide rankings. The game is free-to-play with premium content due for release in the coming months to further expand the gaming experience.

The surge in console gamers logging on to Warrior Quest comes just as the game’s developer and publisher, NextGenBooks.com announces it will be changing to mikomi.info. The group’s website can now be accessed at http://www.mikomi.info although existing URLs will continue to function for some time.

    • Anyone for a game of Pong Toss?

In this Nintendo Wii game you toss the ping pong ball into the cups, but they are not filled with beer.

The upcoming JV Games Nintendo Wii game only looks like that favorite collage game Beer Pong, but it's really just a game where you toss a ping pong ball across a table into a triangular grouping of cups and it just looks like Beer Pong, but it's really called Pong Toss.

It's been criticised by people who say that it is only a way for teens to practice for Beer Pong before they get to college. But the Wii game has taken all of the references to alcohol out of the game.

    • Beer Pong brouhaha

Beer Pong, the favorite past time of American college students, has faced ever increasing heat from concerned parents, colleges and the US government. The battle has become so mainstream it made the front page news section of Yahoo.com today.

The Nintendo Wii game formally titled “Beer Pong” has taken most of the heat as the software maker JV Games received letters from angry parents and Connecticut Attorney General Richard Blumenthal who were concerned that this new form of digital binge drinking could lead to dorm room deaths. As expected JV Games copped out changing the name to “Pong Toss” and switching the cups of beer to water - what could have been a million dollar idea is now a Teen Rated waste of time.

Although the Wii game has been the popular target of late, old fashioned Beer Pong has taken a few hits around the country as well.

Georgetown University banned beer-pong in 2007 as well as “specially made beer-pong tables, inordinate numbers of Ping-Pong balls and any other alcohol-related paraphernalia in its on-campus dorms - even in the rooms of students of legal drinking age.” Multiple schools, including the University of Pennsylvania, Yale University, University of Massachusetts at Amherst and Tufts University are also planning a ban, with many schools expected to follow the trend. Even entire towns, like Belmar, NJ, are outlawing the “sport.”

WON'T SOMEBODY PLEEEEASE THINK OF THE CHILDREN?!!

    • Comcast Giving Away Free Wiis......In Limited Markets

Just seen the AD a few minutes ago. But the real question is, does anybody really believe they will get one? After all, there still is a shortage, and Comcast is notrious liars, just look at the BitTorrent case and throttling of none P2P user even....

While the Nintendo Wii remains in short supply, new Comcast customers may have an easy way to obtain the game console. An employee tells The Consumerist that from July 28-August 17th in select markets (Miami, San Francisco, Houston, Denver, Chicago, Philadelphia, Boston, Detroit,), the company will be giving away a free Wii to new double-play (TV/broadband) subscribers. Keep in mind some default Comcast routers don't play nice with the game console. Stuck in a duopoly market and not thrilled by either option? Comcast may have just made your decision easier.

But wait ya always need tor read the "FINE" print.

Please note that beginning, July 28th, Comcast Sales Agents will begin to offer the Nintendo Wii promotion to *NEW* customers who sign up for a qualifying Triple Play plan [Preferred Plus or Premier, depending on market] *AND* pass the credit screening threshold TBD by market; if they do not pass, they will be required to pay the $250 Wii deposit to sign up for the Nintendo Wii offer.

$250 deposit? That's the actual price of the Wii, so what's the point, shit I'll stay with my provider and just buy the stupid thing.
