    • In Wake of Georgian War, Russian Media Feel Heat

At the height of the crisis over Russia's invasion of Georgia last month, Prime Minister Vladimir Putin summoned the top executives of his nation's most influential newspapers and broadcasters to a private meeting in the Black Sea resort of Sochi.

The Kremlin controls much of the Russian media, and Putin occasionally meets with friendly groups of senior journalists to answer questions and guide news coverage. On Aug. 29, though, for the first time in five years, he also invited the editor in chief of Echo Moskvy, the only national radio station that routinely broadcasts opposition voices.

For several minutes, according to people who attended the session or were briefed about it, Putin berated the editor in front of his peers, criticizing Echo's coverage of the war with Georgia and reading from a dossier of transcripts to point out what he considered errors.

"I'm not interested in who said these things," one participant quoted Putin telling the editor, Alexei Venediktov. "You are responsible for everything that goes on at the radio station. I don't know who they are, but I know who you are... "

    • The Complex: how the Military invades our everyday lives

“Nick Turse’s searing, investigative journalism reveals just how deeply embedded in our lives the war-making system is and why we should be viscerally alarmed. He exposes how, with a growing contingent of corporate/ entertainment/ academic/media collaborators, the Pentagon has not only garrisoned the globe, but come home to dominate the United States. For anyone interested in understanding the crisis this country is in, The Complex is indispensable reading.” “Nick Turse’s searing, investigative journalism reveals just how deeply embedded in our lives the war-making system is and why we shou... more

    • Inside the CIA's Secret Prisons

"The CIA held Mohamed Farag Ahmad Bashmilah in several different cells when he was incarcerated its network of secret prisons known as "black sites." But the small cells were all pretty similar, maybe 7 feet wide and 10 feet long. He was sometimes naked, and sometimes handcuffed for weeks at a time. In one cell his ankle was chained to a bolt in the floor. There was a small toilet. In another cell there was just a bucket. Video cameras recorded his every move. The lights always stayed on -- there was no day or night. A speaker blasted him with continuous white noise, or rap music, 24 hours a day."

      This is one dark story.....

    • Product Placement - The New Rules

Great little video exploring the new, insiduous methods advertisers use in new media forms to get their product seen. As it becomes easier than ever to avoid, ignore or fast-forward through traditional commercial breaks, clunky appearances of consumables - from washing powders to chewing gum - pop up more and more in web casts, film and TV. Fox's 'House', for example, is a great opportunity to play count-the-product-placements - one episode even features a patient awakening after ten or so years in a coma, and neatly sliding in his reaction to encountering an Apple iPod for the first time.

      See also this article

      http://www.guardian.co.uk/media/2007/nov/30/advertising...

from the Guardian's media pages, concerning new European Parliament laws on product placement in EU countries. The directives will come into force in member states by late 2009, allowing product placements to appear in cinema, films for TV, sports broadcasts and entertainment programmes.

I know I should feel outraged, or something, but I actually just find product placements quite charming....

    • Revolutionary Africa Aid Project Brings Virtual Village to Web Users

Imagine an experiment where you could bring 21st century technology, medicine, and agricultural techniques to a tiny African village so impoverished, it could easily be described as 'medieval'. The Katine project, pioneered by the Guardian newspaper, aims to create a sustainable model of development aid - from the ground up - to lift the village out of grinding poverty.

The microsite built around the project contains a dozen shorts films, each around 2 minutes long, which unflinchingly give the long view of Katine local governance, education, and lifelong employment, plus local customs, food, music, and downtime. The hope is that through winning people's devoted interest, a virtual Katine can be created on the web - so that villagers and projects can be followed by anyone who is interested in helping.

Does the 'magic wand' effect work? Or is this just modern-day missionary zeal? Would we be better spreading our charitable resources far and wide and thinly spread? Or can focusing on one village inspire campaigners, first-world governments, and citizens living in relative luxury to do more?

    • Inside the Mind of A Very British Gangster

In aid of his new film - and we think a touch of masochism - investigative journalist-turned-director Donal MacIntyre spends a month embedded in the world of Mancunian gangster Dominic Noonan. The official website (click the link above), is a great resource, featuring a Franz Gall-style map of Noonan's brain linking to film excerpts from topics such as Philosophy, Racism, and Revenge in the criminal 'underworld'. The film, released this friday, looks set to be a gripping socio-economic study of the North's underbelly. • Hunter S. Thompson's Widow's New Book

"It wasn't a reckless obsession with liquor, drugs and gunplay that made the late Hunter S. Thompson the undisputed king of Gonzo journalism, his wife says. Instead, it was old-fashioned principles such as working hard and telling the truth, enlivened by the glee Thompson took from learning and from being right.

In her new book, "The Gonzo Way: A Celebration of Dr. Hunter S. Thompson," Thompson says her husband built his career with a tireless dedication to the craft of reporting, a keen awareness of his own shortcomings and his personal blend of patriotism: loving his country while mistrusting authority."

      Hell YES.

    • Murder In The Name of Religion?

      Bean pie anyone?

This organization touted themselves as the saviors of at-risk young African-American men - rescuing them from the streets of Oakland. Many giving/caring citizens purchased their bean & sweet potato pies for numerous years thinking they were helping out with this cause. In essence what they (Your Black Muslim Bakery) did was amass an army of at-risk young men in order to form a 'Muslim' Army. An Army, that would not spare anyone who stood in their way or threatened to expose their sinister acts.

On August 4th, member(s) of this organization murdered Chauncey Bailey, a journalist & father, who was working on an article that would expose this heinous organization http://www.indybay.org/newsitems/2007/08/03/18438615.ph....
