    • Lawsuits Against Bloggers Seen Rising

When Christopher Grotke answered a late-night knock on the door, he did not expect to find the deputy sheriff on his doorstep serving notice that he was being sued. Nor was he prepared for the charge: libel.

      (ABC News Photo Illustration)

Someone had posted a comment on his citizen-journalism Web site, iBrattleboro.com, stating that a woman in Brattleboro, Vt., was having an extramarital affair. The accused woman then sued Grotke and his Web site co-founder for failing to edit or delete the comment.

The blogging community increasingly is subject to lawsuits and threats of legal action running the gamut from subpoenas to cease-and-desist notices.

Since blogging became popular in about 2004, there have been 159 civil and criminal court actions involving bloggers, according to the nonprofit Media Law Resource Center (MLRC) in New York. Seven cases have resulted in verdicts against bloggers, with cumulative penalties totaling $18.5 million. Many more legal actions never result in trial.

    • Laci Peterson's mother protests inmate blogging, digital rights called into questi...

By now, most of the US is familiar with the sordid details behind the death of Laci Peterson, her unborn child, and the conviction of her husband Scott for their murder. Laci's mom, Sharon Rocha, recently discovered that Scott has been reaching out to the rest of the world via the Internets in the form of a pair of postings to the Peterson Family blog.

Her protest raises some pretty fascinating issues surrounding Internet identity, privacy, and the digital rights of convicts serving time on death row.

Should Internet rights be considered at the time of sentencing? As I recall, Scott's access to the Internet did play a role in the events leading up to Laci's murder.

I'd love to hear others' take on this.

    • World’s oldest blogger signs off singing happy songs

Canberra, Jul 14 : An Australian woman renowned as the world’s oldest blogger has died at the age of 108, with her last post talking about her ailing health but also how she still sings a happy song every day.

Olive Riley, of Woy Woy about 80 kms north of Sydney, began blogging in February 2007, sharing stories from her life during the two world wars, raising three children on her own, and working as a station cook in the outback. The physically frail but mentally alert Riley won an international audience with her blog, The Life of Riley (www.allaboutolive.com.au), and series of videos posted on YouTube with her talking and singing.

Riley was said to be the world’s oldest blogger as she was 12 years older than the previous titleholder, Spain’s Maria Amelia.

Riley was born in 1899 and would have turned 109 in October. “She enjoyed the notoriety — it kept her mind fresh,” her great-grandson Darren Stone of Brisbane told local newspapers.

“She had people communicating with her from as far away as Russia and America on a continual basis, not just once in a while.” Riley had posted more than 70 entries on her blog — or “her blob” as she jokingly called it — since February last year.

She set up the site with the help of a friend who entered her posts for her. In her last and 74th post on June 26 she spoke of moving into a nursing home and of her ill health, saying: “I still feel weak and can’t shake off that bad cough.”

Since early last year, she had written over 70 entries about her life experiences and posted them to her blog, The Life of Riley. Ms. Olive's blog was was keenly followed by readers from all over the world.

In her final post, which was dated June 26th, an increasingly frail Ms. Olive noted that she couldn’t “shake off that bad cough.” She also wrote, “I read a whole swag of email messages and comments from my internet friends today, and I was so pleased to hear from you. Thank you, one and all.”

    • Pros and cons of celeb blogging

Amitabh Bachchan, Aamir Khan and Ajay Devgan are among the many celebrities who have become avid bloggers. So much so that ad men and web experts say blogs are an effective tool of advertising and stars are using it well to promote themselves.

“A blog is a successful means to advertise oneself. In fact, it is not only an effective medium to advertise yourself but to express yourself,” ad man Prahlad Kakkar told media over phone from Mumbai.

Vivek Bahl, associate vice-president (marketing) of social networking site Ibibo.com, seconds Kakkar’s view. He said, “Yes, a blog can be very successful as a means of self promotion since it provides them direct access to the people.”

Bahl sees no harm in celebrities using blogs to promote themselves. “Why not? It provides good visibility, but a celebrity should be clear about what he or she wants to do with the blog,” he said.

Actress Gul Panag, a blogger herself, also feels that it is okay to use blogs for self-promotion. “If bands and artistes can use so many means to promote themselves, why not blogs?”

Celebrities have taken to blogging because blogs are essentially websites where they can post their views and enhance them with graphics and videos. It also enables them to receive reactions and replies from audiences directly.

    • Playboy asks which female blogger you’d like to see sans clothing

Playboy has published profiles of nine women bloggers (loosely defined) - Xeni Jardin, Violet Blue, Julie Alexandria, Veronica Belmont, Amanda Congdon, Brigitte Dale, Sarah Lacy, Sarah Austin and Natali Del Conte - and asked readers to vote on which one is “sexiest.” The winner will be asked to pose for Playboy.

Sarah Lacy, host of Yahoo’s TechTicker, is described respectfully as a “curvy brunette.” Lacy says that Playboy told her about the poll before it was published but said nothing about their plans to ask the winner to pose nude for the magazine. Lacy says if she wins she won’t accept the offer to go nude.

Natali Del Conte, the host of CNET’s Loaded (and former TechCrunch writer), currently leads voting with 24% of total votes, says she was notified of the poll and gave permission to use her picture. She says if she wins she will “absolutely not pose nude for Playboy,” however. Playboy describes Natali as having a “sunshiney demeanor and girl-next-door good looks.”

I’d like to say contests like these are few and far between, but Wired isn’t much better. In 2007 they asked readers to vote for the sexiest geek of 2007 (not linking to it because the Wired article hotlinked to pictures, one of which has been changed to a goatse).
