Communist connection: Victoria Beckham is descendant of Marx comrade
Victoria Beckham is a descendant of a 19th century German communist who was close to Karl Marx.
Apparently, Beckham is the great-great-great-granddaughter of revolutionary and artist Carl Heinrich Pfaender, said German historian Hans Mueller.
Pfaender took part in the failed revolution of 1848 and was forced to flee to London where he worked as a miniaturist and painter to make ends meet. "He certainly didn't get rich doing it," Mueller said. "His wife was buried in a pauper's grave."
The historian was astonished to discover the link between a pioneer of the workers' movement and the pop star. He contacted Beckham's mother, Jacqueline, who confirmed his findings and promised to tell her daughter about the genealogical news. Beckham seeks more than 100 caps
David Beckham described the prospect of winning his 100th cap against France on Wednesday as "an honour" but insisted he does not want to stop there.
The 32-year-old was left out of coach Fabio Capello's first squad last month but is now set to reach his milestone.
Beckham made it clear he has no plans to retire from international football.
"It is not about 'have your 100th game and then retire'. It is about carrying on trying to play well for my country," said the LA Galaxy midfielder.
"I never thought a year ago or two years ago that I would make 95 caps, never mind 100.
"I'm honoured that I'm making, hopefully, my 100th appearance in an England shirt but I'm also honoured to be doing it against one of the best teams in the world.
"But as much as I'm honoured to be here I want it to carry on." David Beckham described the prospect of winning his 100th cap against France on Wednesday as "an honour" but insisted he doe... more -

Humbled England Fires Coach
LONDON, Nov. 22 (AP) England has the wealthiest soccer league in the world, with matches shown across the globe and business tycoons from the United States, Russia and Asia lining up to own the clubs.
So why cant England put 11 Englishmen on the field to succeed at the international level?
Steve McClaren became the latest coach to pay the price Thursday; he was fired after England failed to qualify for the 2008 European Championship, losing by 3-2 to visiting Croatia on Wednesday when a tie would have meant qualification. Croatian Catastrophe! England fail to qualify for Euro 2008
England failed to qualify for the Euro 2008 championship after a shocking performance at Wembley. A shock inclusion for goalkeeper Scott Carson over Paul Robinson must've been a lot for the debut keeper to take in, and unfortunately it showed; with his performance proving McClaren's team selection to be anything but shocking.
Carson let two soft goals in which meant England were never in control of the game. Frank Lampard brought it back to 2-1 with a penalty after Jermaine Defoe was fouled in the area, the second came from a beautiful chest and volley from Peter Crouch. Croatian player Petric sealed England's fate in the last quarter of the game.
With all the press McClaren has been receiving it's bound to cost him his job as England manager and after such a dismal display, he can have few complaints.
So, what are your views on the game and McClaren's choice of players?
Should he have played Robinson and Beckham and should he maintain his role of England's manager?? England failed to qualify for the Euro 2008 championship after a shocking performance at Wembley. A shock inclusion for goalkeeper Sco... more -
England vs. Croatia: Beckham & Robinson Dropped
With big games come big decisions, and England's manager Steve McClaren has made two momentous ones ahead of tonight's decisive clash with Croatia.
If Croatia win, England are out of Euro 2008 and despite his incredible ability to evade the sack so far, Steve McClaren's international career will be over.
In a bid to ensure England qualify, McClaren's made the risky decision to drop David Beckham from the starting line up, and the not-so-risky decision to replace goalie Paul Robinson with Villa and England Under-21's keeper Scott Carson. The link above covers the summaries of what the UK papers are saying.
There's not long to wait so see if he's made the right call but leave a comment and let us know what you think about McClaren's call and England's chances tonight. With big games come big decisions, and England's manager Steve McClaren has made two momentous ones ahead of tonight's decis... more -
