    • Manowar - longest heavy metal concert set world record

The concert of the legendary kings of metal, Manowar, on the opening night of Kaliakra Rock Festival 2008 in the Bulgarian “rock capital” of Kavarna on July 5 lasted for five hours and one minute. The performance was the metal band's attempt to break the world record for the longest heavy metal concert, which they themselves set in 2007 at last year's edition of the festival.

Joey DeMaio, Eric Adams, Karl Logan and Scott Columbus pleased a crowd of 20 000 people with a playlist of more than 40 songs, a selection reflecting the band's history and all its studio albums.

Тhis year, the self-annointed "kings of metal" had promised Bulgarian fans to beat last year’s performance of three hours on stage, and had specially invited representatives of Guinness book of records to witness the unprecedented event.

    • Live Earth One Year Ago

Last year on 7/7/07 I attended the Live Earth concert in East Rutherford, Nj. It was a day of environmental awareness and great music, and left an impression on my teenage son to live a more sustainable life. Since that time I have been wondering about all of the other people who attended Live Earth around the world. Did they take the pledge? Have they lived by it? And while some have chosen to pan this concert simply because Al Gore put it together, I will say that it was a great attempt to raise awareness of this crisis and I truly hope people got the message.

So thanks again Mr. Gore and Kevin Wall for bringing us Live Earth. Hopefully it didn't end with the concert last year and some were brought to that higher level of consciousness. Anyway, this is a video from Giants Stadium where I was of the last performance by Roger Waters, which was one of my favorites.

You can see more about the concert, take the pledge, or see what Live Earth is doing at http://www.liveearth.org

    • Björk and Sigur Rós stand up for Icelandic environment

Icelandic artists Björk and Sigur Rós will play a concert in Reykjavík on June 28th to raise awareness on environmental issues in Iceland.

"Neither me or Sigur Rós look at ourselves as experts on nature, or as politicians, but we do travel a lot and we believe we know a lot about what image Iceland has abroad, and that we are far behind when it comes to being", says Björk.
"Too often battles being fought for nature turn into something negative and into mudslinging. We will not go that way, we are not saying that this and that is forbidden, we are rather asking "what about all these other possibilites?". The 21st century is not going to be another oil century but rather a century where we need to recycle, think green and design both power plants and our surroundings in harmony with nature."

    • Kanye's Hip-Hop Sci-Fi Space Odyssey

God i so wanted to go to this concert.
"There is a new yardstick for the size of the universe. It is approximately equal to the size of Kanye West’s ego.
That’s not necessarily bad. Hip-hop runs on self-glorification, the transformation of underdogs into self-invented legends. Sooner or later someone was bound to claim what Mr. West’s show did on Tuesday night at Madison Square Garden: that he’s “the biggest star in the universe.” That was not only part of the script but also a crucial plot twist for Mr. West’s headlining set on his Glow in the Dark Tour, a quadruple bill with Rihanna, N.E.R.D. and Lupe Fiasco.
Mr. West’s set was the most daring arena spectacle hip-hop has yet produced, and in some ways the best, even as it jettisoned standard hip-hop expectations. The rhymes, the beats and the narcissism were there; the block-party spirit and sense of community were not. Until the encore Mr. West had no human company on the arena stage.
The spectacle is framed as a sci-fi space odyssey, with Mr. West as a lone explorer whose starship crashes on an unknown planet. He’s stranded in a landscape of colored lights, billowing smoke — probably enough dry ice to cool Death Valley — and gorgeous, panoramic video images of clouds, galaxies, fireworks and cosmic eruptions. He converses with his computerized ship, named Jane, and with shooting stars. He raps with barely a respite, and bounds around the stage: striding, hunching, pumping his fist, falling to his knees, grinding against the stage, flailing, shouting his rhymes. It is a show of stamina and lonely self-determination that takes on its own obsessive momentum, like a Samuel Beckett scene staged by Robert Wilson and George Lucas.

Mr. West’s songs — chronicles of his striving, success, fashion sense and media missteps — don’t have much to do with a planet devoid of paparazzi or designer labels. At Tuesday’s show, praying to get back home, he promised God that if he made it, he’d “stop spazzing out at awards shows.” But he wrenched the songs into the concept, turning “Gold Digger,” for instance, into a tryst with a hologram generated by his spaceship.

The music was rearranged (for a band sequestered in an orchestra pit) to sound less triumphal and more melancholy. Mr. West reaches pop audiences with pop hooks, but the concert often held them back, starting instead with drumbeats and reverberating minor chords before allowing sweetness in. The audience joined him every chance it got, and he did eventually get back home, to share an encore with Lupe Fiasco. But in Mr. West’s tour de force, it was lonely at the top. Cosmically lonely.

In the opening set the rapper Lupe Fiasco showed his own ambitions, verbal and musical. He rapped not only about stardom but also about skateboarding, child soldiers and a worldwide plague. And the music in his short set, using three backup singers, encompassed chattering electronic beats, smooth R&B and mournful rock. It was a good start for a concert that insisted hip-hop hasn’t run out of possibilities, even on this planet."

      sweeeeeet. did anyone go?

A 9-day multi-event human rights gathering will be held May 20 – 29th of 2008 on the UCLA campus. The events will consist of a Genocide Awareness Week to occur between May 20 – May 29, and the Mighty Mic Human Rights Awareness Concert to Save Darfur in Ackerman Grand Ballroom on the evening of May 29th, 2008. We feel that this date is significant as this year will see the 60th Anniversary of the Raphael Lemkin’s 1948 Genocide Convention, where the world first proclaimed its opposition to genocide and ethnic cleansing at the international level.

The Mighty Mic Human Rights Awareness Concert and Genocide Awareness Week will consist of events that raise awareness about genocides past and present while celebrating the courage and perseverance of genocide survivors and emphasizing the importance of ending the ongoing genocide in Darfur.
