Blind Belgian breaks speed record
Belgian Luc Costermans has broken the world blind road speed record, on an airstrip in France.
Mr Costermans topped 308.78km/h (192 mph) while driving a Lamborghini Gallardo supercar at Istres, near Marseille, in southern France.
Mr Costermans thanked his co-pilot Guillaume Roman, saying: ""I'm very, very happy. It's a team effort."
Mr Costermans took the record from Briton Mike Newman, whose BMW M5 reached 268km/h three years ago.
Dedication
Mr Costermans, 43, was blinded in an accident four years ago.
He hit the top speed in two runs in the borrowed car.
He dedicated his effort to the Formula 1 racing driver Philippe Streiff, who has been a tetraplegic since suffering an accident in a Grand Prix in Brazil in 1989.
Two years ago Mr Costermans completed a tour of France piloting a light aeroplane.
He was accompanied by an instructor and a navigator. Belgian Luc Costermans has broken the world blind road speed record, on an airstrip in France. ... more -
Small electric cars in Vancouver
Vancouver is recommending traffic laws be changed to require such cars to stay on the right-hand side of the street except when turning left or passing. The province had previously restricted the cars - which legally can't drive faster than 40 km/h - to streets with speed limits less than this limit, but municipalities are allowed to alter this rule. Go 2,000 miles on 1 tank of fuel. From London to Venice!
This sleek machine is being hailed as the future of high-performance, eco-friendly motoring.
With an engine that runs on pure biodiesel, the Trident Iceni can do 2,000 miles on one tank of fuel - enough for a return trip to Venice from London.
Capable of topping 200mph, the car has been designed and manufactured by Phil Bevan, of Norwich-based firm Trident Performance Vehicles.
Just 500 go on sale from next year, priced at £75,000, after the firm spent £2.3million in development.
A spokesman said: ‘It’s like having a Lamborghini without the cost or the damage to the environment.
‘Electric cars are great for short distances but not really ideal for people who live in rural locations.
‘The Iceni is incredibly economical on fuel, which is virtually unheard of in a car of that speed.’
It uses a technology called 'torque multiplication' which helps keeps the revs low and thus uses less fuel and gives out less emissions.
The chassis is made from stainless steel which won’t corrode and the body isbuilt of composite which will never rust or degrade.
I'll take one please! This sleek machine is being hailed as the future of high-performance, eco-friendly motoring. ... more -

Salem neighbors making noise about loud motorcycles
SALEM — There are days when Alicia Hart claims to endure the earsplitting rumble 50 times a day.
“You can hear them a half-mile in either direction,” said the Salem Common neighbor.
They ride in packs of five or six, revving their engines at stop lights and storming through the neighborhood with no regard for the peace-seeking residents who live there, she says.

A national speed limit of 55 MPH?
An influential Republican senator suggested Thursday that Congress might want to consider reimposing a national speed limit to save gasoline and possibly ease fuel prices.
Sen. John Warner, R-Va., asked Energy Secretary Samuel Bodman to look into what speed limit would provide optimum gasoline efficiency given current technology. He said he wants to know if the administration might support efforts in Congress to require a lower speed limit.
Congress in 1974 set a national 55 mph speed limit because of energy shortages caused by the Arab oil embargo. The speed limit was repealed in 1995 when crude oil dipped to $17 a barrel and gasoline cost $1.10 a gallon.
As motorists headed on trips for this Fourth of July weekend, gasoline averaged $4.10 a gallon nationwide with oil hovering around $145 a barrel.
Warner cited studies that showed the 55 mph speed limit saved 167,000 barrels of oil a day, or 2 percent of the country's highway fuel consumption, while avoiding up to 4,000 traffic deaths a year. Trains are coming back in style!
In the future, there will be the return of railroads and I couldn't be happier!
I've already explained in another article that I think it's time that U.S. really starts considering a larger network of high-speed railways because of our current airline problems. I know it's being implemented in California and in Texas but with all the problems lately with air travel from masturbating passengers to too hot fliers, we need a new mode of transportation across the board.
Also, well established high speed rail systems in use today are more environmentally friendly than air or road travel. This is due to lower energy consumption per passenger kilometer, reduced land usage for a given capacity compared to motorways, and displaced usage from more environmentally damaging modes of transport. In fact, I'm sure more study into it could make it even more eco-friendly.
I don't know why Americans think flight is our only mode of transportation. I know it's quicker but the prices are rising and the courtesy you once got on a flight is now diminishing. Flight understandable when going overseas or even across country but we've got find new efficient ways to get around. In the future, there will be the return of railroads and I couldn't be happier! ... more -
