Police officers on trial for beating transsexual - one year after the incident
The police officers who beat up and insulted transsexual Esmeray in June 2007 for passing by the front of the station will be tried for the crime of “simple bashing and insulting.”
According to the information Esmeray’s lawyer Meriç Eyüboğlu supplied to Bianet, the prosecutor accuses the police officers Mustafa Muhammet Çırakoğlu and Ceyhan Göven with “simple bashing and insulting.”
According to Esmeray’s account, she was stopped by a police officer while going back to her home and yelled at for taking the route forbidden to her. The yelling was followed by a punch to her eye and kicks by the other police officers when she hit the ground.
Later Esmeray decided to take the matter to the court, since “this was nothing new. Passing by the street in front of the police station (which happens to be one of the major streets in Taksim area in Istanbul and open to public) has been banned to the transvestites and transsexuals for a while.” Esmeray wanted to know if this was legal. She filed her complaint so that others would not have to go through this human rights violation again.
Later, says Esmeray, the police officer came and apologized. He was very sorry, because he did not know that she was making a living by selling mussels. Esmeray says she told him that he did not have the right to hid her even if she was not selling mussels. The police officer asked her to withdraw her complaint, but she did not.
Esmeray said that she also filed a complaint about the police officers who attacked her this May. Eyüboğlu said the Office of Beyoğlu Prosecutor in Istanbul launched an investigation about this incident.

Father tries to beat the 'gayness' out of own son with baseball bat
"An Anderson, South Carolina man is being investigated for assault and potential hate crime charges after beating his son on two separate occasions following a pride parade on Sunday. Yes, this is in the same state that just ran out on its credit to an advertising agency after running thousands of “South Carolina is so gay” ads, leaving a pride group in the state to volunteer to pick up the check.
The 49-year-old man greeted his son in the street after the boy had returned from the Anderson pride parade, already in a fit of rage. He commenced striking his own son with a baseball bat while cursing, praying, and “casting the demon of homosexuality” out of his 18-year old." 2010 census won't count gay marriages
Although gay marriage is legal in Massachusetts and California, census officials say that same-sex partners in both states who list themselves as spouses will be recorded as "unmarried partners" -- just as they were in the 2000 census.
Census Bureau spokesman Stephen Buckner cited the Defense of Marriage Act, approved by Congress and signed by President Bill Clinton in 1996, which prohibits the federal government from recognizing as a marriage the union of anyone but a man and a woman.
The law "requires all federal agencies to recognize only opposite-sex marriages for the purposes of administering federal programs," Buckner wrote in an e-mailed statement. "Many of these programs rely on Census Bureau statistics."
Census officials have said the agency will retain same-sex spouses' original responses but will edit them for the published census tabulations.
Critics of the policy -- and the law -- say it ignores the changing legal and political landscape in states that contain about 14 percent of the U.S. population. And it ensures that the census results will be factually incorrect, they say. Although gay marriage is legal in Massachusetts and California, census officials say that same-sex partners in both states who list th... more -
Lesbian & Gay Senior Lives Part 2 - The First March
In June of 1970, a year after the Stonewall Riots, a march took place on what was then called Christopher Street Gay Liberation Day. It went up one lane of traffic on Sixth Avenue to the Sheep Meadow in Central Park. In part two of the lesbian and gay senior experience, individuals who were there that day talk about the march. Thanks to one of them, Jerry Hoose, we have archival footage allowing us to relive the first Gay Liberation Day. This video excerpt is from Out at the Center, a TV show of the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Community Center of New York City. To see more episodes go to gaycenter.org/out. Lesbian & Gay Senior Lives Part 1 - Before Stonewall
The current generation of LGBT seniors came of age amidst the profound social changes of the 1950's 60's, and 70's. Their stories reflect queer history from the isolation of the past, to the triumphs of the present day. Part one of this two part series, takes a look at what it was like to be "gay" before the Stonewall uprising, when lesbians and gays felt enormous pressure to conform. Out at the Center sat down to hear the experiences of these individuals who are currently active with SAGE or Services and Advocacy for GLBT Elders. Buying time for transgendered children: hormone treatment delays puberty
A procedure some are mistakenly calling a sex change treatment for children has been drawn into the spotlight in recent days - although it has been going on for many years.
Dr. Norman Spack, endocrinologist at Children's Hospital in Boston, revealed that he has at least 10 pediatric transgendered patients to whom he has been giving a hormone-blocking treatment to delay puberty.
While Spack may be the first to go public about what he is doing, he is not the first to help children delay their puberty so they can reach maturity before deciding if they would like to transition to the opposite sex.
According to Milton Diamond, a sexual development researcher and the director of the Pacific Center for Sex and Society at the University of Hawaii, says that the hormone-blocking therapy itself is not a sex reassignment. Quite the contrary, it is a "delaying tactic to allow the individual to come to terms with the direction he or she wants to go".
The treatments are done in accordance with the Harry Benjamin guidelines (generally accepted clinical guidelines for treating transsexual patients), which call for fully reversible treatments for prepubescent children.
The therapy entails an injection of either luteinizing hormone-releasing hormone (LHRH) or medroxyprogesterone, which block estrogen or testosterone to delay the onset of puberty.
In addition to delaying the onset of puberty, the hormone-blocking process does help patients avoid unwanted bodily features if they do decide to undergo a sex change upon reaching adulthood. It is the changes of puberty that often cause the most distress for transgendered children.
Male transsexuals can avoid going through menstruation, while female patients can avoid growing body hair or developing a deep voice if they begin sex reassignment once their childhood hormone-blocking regimen ends. Although the treatment is reversible, Diamond says that most who reach that point will go on to transition. "Almost all those who have gender identity disorder continue on to surgery, or at least continue on to transitions," says Diamond.

Straight Pride Parade
Although reggae is known for its militancy and its resistance to injustice, the reggae community has remained calm throughout the attack on the music by Peter Tatchell and other Gay activists groups. Rather than going on the offense, the reggae community will instead unite in solidarity a day prior to labor day in New York City.
TCOOO Productions the label behind the "18 Karat Reggae" CD series is holding the first ever Straight Pride Parade in Brooklyn, New York on August 31, 2008. The parade will take place on Eastern Parkway along the same route as the annual Caribbean labor day parade.
New reggae / dancehall sensation Jango Fresh said, "the Straight pride parade is a great idea because when a song like "Hit them hard" by my label mate Stapler can be banned just because it stresses the importance of a male and a female in every family, it is a sign that heterosexuals need to wake up.
The Straight Pride Parade is a chance for Heterosexuals to gather together and proudly embrace their sexuality. The Parade will also allow reggae and dancehall fans who are in New York City for the Labor Day celebrations to get together and celebrate reggae, dancehall and family in love and unity. Adults are encouraged to bring their children along for the celebrations, as the event will be family oriented.
The president of TCOOO said he hopes the event will unify the reggae community who has seen many reggae events cancelled recently not only in the United States but all over Europe and the Caribbean. "I sat quietly and watched as they cancelled artists like Buju Banton, Sizzla Kalonji and Capleton" he said, "but when the gay community went after TCOOO artists like Vineyard the Rebel Priest, Stapler and Jango Fresh we decided that we must make a show of strength."
Reggae artist Stapler whose song "Hit them Hard" was climbing the reggae charts was suddenly banned for what the artist said was nothing but pro family lyrics. "It is like we are not allowed to talk about the importance of a family anymore" Stapler told DJ Ron Muschette on Irie FM in Jamaica.
TCOOO Productions whose profiles can be found at [www.myspace.com/tcooo www.myspace.com/tcooo and [www.tcooo.imeem.comwww.tcooo.imeem.com is getting a lot of support for staging the Straight Pride Parade as thousands of fans have already let it be known that they will be attending the parade in August. All the artists who are on the latest TCOOO release "18 Karate Reggae: Global Warming" will be performing at the parade. These artists include Stapler, Jango Fresh, Vineyard the Rebel Priest, Massicker and Zeego Zaro.
Hit Them Hard - Stapler
(chorus)
Jah Jah gonna hit them hard
All the men who visit men backyard
Leaving all the women to starve
One thunder ball and all of them pause
Hand in hand with my lady
Hug her and kiss her cause she carried my baby
But some boys moving shady
While am chilling on the ends making sweet love to Sadie
All I know am here to produce and all the ladies you are my friends
From the past, the present, the future my girl, love and respect to the end
(chorus)
Remember you are a King, what happened to your queen
The youths need a role model to instill self esteem
So live your life clean
and you will see what I mean
(chorus)
The world is spinning and everything in it
Mankind lose their way, some gone past their limit
Am here to advice and to be a critic
Be careful of the lifestyle you choose to exibit
Children live what they learn
Aren't you concerned
of your choices in society
We need to preserve the value of a male and a female in every family

Alex, 17, to become Britain's youngest sex-change patient
17-year old female-born Sarah Thornton is set to become Britain's youngest sex-change patient. Having lived as a teenage boy for over a year, 'Alex' has been granted permission by his GP and psychiatrist to begin the formal transition process. He is hoping that the female-to-male sex change operation that will include a double mastectomy and a hysterectomy will be completed within the next 12 months.
Having identified as a lesbian before, Alex is convinced that the surgery is the right option for him: 'If I could have had the operation done yesterday, then I would have done. Even the thought of having it makes me feel better, and I'm just looking forward to the day I can start leading my life as a man.'
The doctors' decision to allow Alex to go ahead with the transition process even though he is only 17 years old raises the controversial question of when patients are old enough not only to decide on their gender, but also to physically alter their appearance.

Virginia groom passes as bride, could face charges
RICHMOND, Virginia (AP) -- The couple walked into a Norfolk, Virginia courthouse on a spring day, exchanged a few words, and within 10 minutes, were seemingly husband and wife.
It was an unremarkable ceremony -- except that several weeks later, officials realized the shapely bride might not have been a woman.
Now authorities in Virginia, where same-sex marriages are illegal, are weighing whether to file misdemeanor charges against the couple, Antonio E. Blount, 31, and Justin L. McCain, 18. An announcement is expected this week.
A prosecutor says the decision to press charges could turn on whether the pair knowingly misled officials when they applied for a license and later, traveled to a courthouse for a ceremony. If the bride was transgender, and identified as a woman, it is unclear whether the marriage would be considered illegal.
