    • Disaboom | Vicki | Why Are Disabled People So Mean?

I was particularly drawn to one question: "Why are some disabled people so mean?" It piqued my attention because I am disabled, and I don't think I am mean. The asker explains that he tried to help a disabled woman by opening the door and was greeted with a dirty look, like maybe he was going to rob her, and certainly with no thanks. He said that had happened before, so he was not going to help any more disabled people. I was particularly drawn to one question: "Why are some disabled people so mean?" • Can a disabled model make it?

"Kelly Knox has won a contest to become Britain's top disabled model, landing a photo shoot in the pages of a glossy magazine as a result.

The BBC3 programme Britain's Missing Top Model (BMTM) has stirred up controversy and debate as viewers watched eight girls with different disabilities battle it out for the title.

Based on the same format as America's Next Top Model and its British counterpart, the reality show followed the girls as they progressed through the competition.

But unlike its sister shows, BMTM was not offering a cast-iron contract to its winner - just the chance to meet with a modelling agency to see if they would sign her up.

Even the judges could not decide whether the winner would be able to turn their Marie Claire spread into a fully-fledged career as they discussed who would make the best role model.

In one episode, an able-bodied model provided a disturbing insight to the challenge they faced when she said to the camera: "God, New York would rather burn their city down than put a disabled model on the catwalk, I reckon."

What do you think? Is there room for a disabled model in the industry?

I started to wonder why. I have several really good websites in my Bookmarks file. But not a single one gets visited every day. Why Disaboom? I think its because I really longed for a community of people who really honestly get me. The only non-disabled group of people that I can say fall into this catagory is my family and my best friend. • Health care comes easier in Switzerland for those with autism

Amazingly detailed look into the social service programs made available to families with children who are autistic. Basically, it boils down to this. No one in Switzerland needs to worry about health care, as each member of the community has equal rights and access to services across the board.

Is it costly for the Swiss? Yes. But the exchange is huge. Parents of autistic children don't need to worry about their child's quality of life after they pass away.

The brilliant aspect of this piece is the contrast made with US health care in the section titled: "Same scenario, different continent." A sad comparison, but an inspiring story about the LeGendres, who have two autistic daughters, is highlighted amongst the sadness. A snippet:

"So LeGendre, a former research scientist, and Herlihy, the CEO of a biotech company, tried something completely out of the box. They bought a 10,000-square-foot former convent. They hope to convert it into a group home that will someday house not just Lily and Julia, but perhaps several other disabled adults and staff members to care for them."

      Truly compelling.

    • Delta makes woman with muscular dystrophy crawl off plane

On July 20th, Julianna's (delayed) Delta flight landed in Atlanta at 7:30pm, with a connecting flight scheduled for 8:05pm. Julianna, who has muscular dystrophy, missed the connecting flight because nobody came with a wheelchair until 8:05—the same time the connecting flight took off. To make matters worse, the plane crew told Julianna she might make the flight anyway if she stopped waiting for help and got off the plane right now, so she crawled down the stairs on her own. When the wheelchair came she was "wheeled into a back room and advised" that her plane had taken off. But that was just the first half of her ordeal, and the next eight hours only got worse.

Letter Julianna has sent to Richard Anderson, Delta's CEO:

The employees in this room were debating who would get me to the ticket gate to be re-ticketed because it was no one's job and the appropriate personnel were not responding to their calls. After that was resolved I was given a new boarding pass for a flight expected to leave at 12:55 AM. Then this person advised me she cannot get me from a D Gate to Gate A9. She again called for the appropriate personnel who never showed. We waited by an elevator for someone she convinced to bring me over to Gate A even though it was not his job. I had to beg him to stop at a bathroom entrance and to wait for me and then he finally delivered me to Gate A9.

I was given a meal voucher for my INCONVENIENCE but could not purchase any food because again there was no one to bring me to an eating establishment, never mind wait on the long line for me to make a food purchase.

At 11:15 I advised the gate attendant I was dehydrated and cramping because I could not purchase any water. This is the only nice employee that treated me with dignity. The flight I was transferred to was supposed to leave at 10:22 PM but was delayed until 1:30 AM. This gate attendant went and brought me water off of the plane.

This gate attendant also made sure she finally found some one at 11:15 PM to push me to obtain food and another bathroom break. I arrived in West Palm Beach at 3:15 AM with no ride and had to again crawl into the shuttle service to get home.

I understand plane delays and waiting at airports, but is this how you treat your handicapped passengers???

The text above is from a letter Julianna has sent to Richard Anderson, Delta's CEO, who we hope will do more than send her another food voucher—like take real steps to make sure handicapped passengers are treated with a minimum of respect when they're traveling.
On July 20th, Julianna's (delayed) Delta flight landed in Atlanta at 7:30pm, with a connecting flight scheduled for 8:05pm. Julia... more

    • Disability protections ordered for sexually incapacitated

A South Carolina breast-cancer survivor has beaten the State Department and convinced judges in Washington that the inability to have sex is a disability protected under federal anti-discrimination laws.

The new appellate-court ruling gives Piedmont, S.C., resident Kathy E. Adams another potential shot at serving overseas. More broadly, the ruling cracks open the courtroom door for additional legal challenges by those who are sexually incapacitated.

"I think it's a major victory for former cancer patients, and for anyone who has had their sex life disrupted," Adams' attorney David H. Shapiro said Tuesday.

Adams, herself a practicing lawyer, wants to compel the State Department to hire her as a foreign service officer and provide back pay. She'll now go before a jury and trial judge, unless the State Department relents first.

"I think their goose may be cooked," Shapiro said.

52 percent of Americans would rather die than live with a severe disability, according to a recent national survey commissioned by Disaboom (www.disaboom.com), the premiere online community for people touched by disability. Disaboom today announced the shocking results in an effort to educate people about why this viewpoint is so tragic.
