Product placement hits the FOX newsroom
Several TV outlets have begun to sell the fast food giant McDonald's the right to place cups of its iced coffee onto the desks of news anchors as they present morning current affairs shows.
Typical is Fox 5 News, an affiliate of Rupert Murdoch's Fox television network in Las Vegas.
Two cups of coffee, their cubes of ice glinting in the studio lights, now daily stand before the channel's morning presenters. The presenters conspicuously do not drink from the cups, which is just as well – the cups contain a bogus fluid and fake ice to prevent the cubes melting.
The New York Times has reported that similar deals to place McDonald's products in news shows are up and running in TV stations in Chicago, Seattle and New York.
Product placement has become a major branch of advertising in the US, creeping into all areas of entertainment television. Not only are products seen on camera, they also make their way into drama scripts such as a recent episode of the popular soap, OC, which had one character talk about having "a9.Com'd" a friend on the day the internet search company A9 launched a new Yellow Pages service of that name.
But this is the first time that the form has percolated through to news broadcasting. Journalism ethics groups have protested that this is another erosion of standards.
"There has been in broadcast journalism certainly, and arguably in all journalism, a drifting away from the standards of straight news in the direction of entertainment," said Roy Peter Clark of the school for journalists at the Poynter Institute.
Fox 5 News has declined to reveal how much it is being paid by McDonald's for the six-month promotion. The station's news director Adam Bradshaw said that the product placement was only allowed in programmes that were appropriate, including later morning shows with an accent on lifestyle.

McDonald's getting flack for supporting "the homosexual agenda"
Let me get this straight, McDonald's knowingly contributes to the obesity epidemic, plays an active role in helping squelch this nation's agriculutre systems, practices substandard beef and food health regulations, bioengineers food with unknown repurcussions, and yet the masses line up en masse to collect a coke, a smile, and a plastic happy meal toy.
Yet they support equal rights for other human beings who happen to be gay or lesbian and suddenly feathers are ruffled enough to get active in protest?

McDonald's apologises after group of mothers stage sit-in over breast-feeding ban
A McDonald's manager who told a young woman to stop breastfeeding found himself faced with a demonstration of Mum Power.
Maddie Reynolds returned with five friends she had met at ante-natal classes and they staged a mass feed-in at the restaurant.
'We all walked in to McDonald's together and sat around one table right by the counter,' said 27-year-old Miss Reynolds, a nursery nurse from Bournemouth. We began breastfeeding our babies all at the same time to make a point. We caused a bit of a stir among customers but none of the staff looked our way. Someone told a manager what we were doing but he just muttered that he couldn't comment.'
The incident happened at the McDonald's branch inside an Asda supermarket in the resort. Miss Reynolds was feeding ten-week-old Sophie when the staff member intervened.
'I had a proper maternity top on which is designed for breastfeeding so no one could see anything,' she said. 'I was angry when the man told me to leave but knew I wasn't doing anything wrong so I carried on. But he just stood there and watched me for a few minutes. I felt so humiliated but put my head down and didn't stop and eventually he walked off. I felt so cross and upset.'
Miss Reynolds lives with partner Karl Brackenborough, 29, who works as a television fitter and repairer.
She added: 'I choose to breastfeed Sophie because I know it's healthy and the best thing for her. I remember reading about a similar incident a while back where a woman was thrown out of a coffee shop for breastfeeding. She was so upset by it that she started using bottles instead. I wasn't prepared to let something like that happen to anyone else again.'
Fellow protester Catherine Davis, 19, took her seven-week-old daughter Amelia along to the sit-in. She said: 'I just thought the way Maddie was treated was disgusting. It's the most natural thing to feed your baby and there's nothing wrong with it. Everyone says breast is best. I have breastfed in public and no one ever has ever said anything to me. I think it's fine as long as you are discreet.'
Alison Purves, spokesman for McDonald's, said the company was 'disappointed' by the junior manager's actions. Breastfeeding mothers were welcomed in all its restaurants.
'This manager was working unilaterally and not following company policy at all. If another customer ever expressed their discomfort about breastfeeding we would encourage them to move rather than the mum. What we don't want to do is to make mums feel as if they have to hide away.'
She said the manager involved had been told he had made a mistake.
'We are confident he will make the right decision in future.' A McDonald's manager who told a young woman to stop breastfeeding found himself faced with a demonstration of Mum Power. ... more -

US Christian group boycotts McDonald's for association with gay organisation
The US Christian group that pressured Heinz to pull an UK commercial featuring two men kissing is now targeting McDonald's, accusing the fast-food chain of refusing "to remain neutral in the culture war".The American Family Association began a boycott campaign against McDonald's in response to the company's membership in the Washington-based National Gay and Lesbian Chamber of Commerce (NGLCC). The AFA is promoting its boycott, including an online anti-McDonald's petition, to its more than 2.5 million members. "This boycott is not about hiring homosexuals. It is not about homosexuals eating at McDonald's," the AFA states on its BoycottMcDonalds.com website. "McDonald's has chosen … to give the full weight of their corporation to promoting the homosexual agenda, including homosexual marriage."The AFA urged its members to complain to Heinz last month about a Deli Mayo commercial that depicted two men kissing, although the advert was only shown in the UK. The commercial was pulled from the airwaves before the AFA campaign reached its peak. The group, which describes itself as supportive of "traditional family values", has previously mounted boycotts of Ford and Disney for engaging with the gay community. The AFA also maintains a news website that attracted notoriety this month for its policy of automatically replacing the word "gay" with "homosexual". Thus was Olympic sprinting hopeful Tyson Gay unwittingly renamed Tyson Homosexual, to the mocking delight of many liberal bloggers.McDonald's joined the NGLCC earlier this year and made a donation to the group. In addition, a senior executive joined the NGLCC board. The AFA also attributes its boycott to the company's sponsorship of the 2007 gay pride parade in San Francisco.Ford ceased its policy of advertising in gay media outlets after the AFA launched a boycott, but McDonald's has so far refused to end its involvement in the NGLCC or make concessions to the AFA."We treat our employees with respect and dignity, regardless of their ethnicity, religious beliefs, sexual orientation or other factors," McDonald's chief diversity officer Pat Harris wrote to AFA founder Donald Wildmon in May. Are we not toys? We are DEVO...and we're suing McDonald's
Upset over a recent Happy Meal toy pack-in named New Wave Nigel, who sports the group's trademark outfit, Devo is seeking litigious action.
Pitchfork reports:
"According to an Australian Associated Press report reprinted on stuff.co.nz [via BrooklynVegan], the band is suing McDonald's, claiming that no one from the company contacted them about New Wave Nigel. Devo bassist Gerald Casale-- who designed the trademarked energy dome headgear-- is quoted as saying, "This New Wave Nigel doll that they've created is just a complete Devo rip-off and the red hat is exactly the red hat that I designed, and it's copyrighted and trademarked. We're in the midst of suing them...they didn't ask us anything. Plus, we don't like McDonald's, and we don't like 'American Idol', so we're doubly offended."
The toy is a part of a tie-in with American Idol. Each toy plays music, and as you may have guessed, Nigel's song is "Devo-esque."

McDonald’s fries switched to trans-fat-free oil
McDonald’s said Thursday its french fries are now trans-fat-free in all its restaurants in the United States and Canada, catching it up with its fast-food rivals in that category.
CEO Jim Skinner made it official at its annual shareholders meeting at McDonald’s Corp. headquarters in Oak Brook, Ill.
McDonald’s has lagged other restaurant operators in switching over to a zero-trans-fat cooking oil out of worries it would compromise the taste of its trademark fries. It has been under increasing pressure from consumer advocates and some public officials to make the change, but it did so quietly.
“For a few months now, customers in our U.S. restaurants have been enjoying our fried food items, including french fries, hash browns, chicken and filet of fish, as well as our biscuits, with zero grams of trans fat per labeled serving,” Skinner said.
He said McDonald’s is on schedule to convert to the new oil by year’s end for its remaining baked items, pies and cookies.
“While we don’t plan to advertise these changes, we wanted you to be the first to know that we have followed through on our commitment while keeping the same great taste that our customers expect from McDonald’s,” Skinner said.
The $23 billion company was especially cautious in making the switch after reneging within months on a September 2002 pledge to introduce a new oil, citing the taste concerns.
McDonald’s has nearly 14,000 restaurants in the United States.
The company said it also has upheld its commitment to significantly reduce the amount of trans fat in its restaurants around the world, reducing it to less than 0.5 grams per serving in Europe, Latin America and its Asia Pacific-Middle East-Africa division. The four exceptions are Colombia, Japan, Ukraine and Venezuela, where McDonald’s is still working toward its reduction goals.
