    • Dutch imams promoting 'shared' values

Imams in Dutch mosques usually preach the same virtues & values in their sermons commonly accepted by other Dutch people (which is important) according to a recent study.

Fred Leemhuis, professor of Arabic at Groningen University points out:

"The image of Dutch imams is based on comments by two or three radical salafi [fundamentalist] Imams, who continually turn up in the media. We wanted to find out what Dutch mainstream imams are really preaching. And, in particular, which virtues they're commending to their congregations."

      SERMONS ANALYSED

The sermons of six randomly chosen Dutch Imams from different ethnic backgrounds who were also extensively interviewed were analysed by Mr Leemhuis & Anand Blank. The study shows that the opinions of the imams are very moderate and hardly differ from those of other Dutch people.

"What is noticeable about the sermons of the imams is that a large majority represent a kind of moderate middle-of-the-road orthodoxy. Not extreme either one way or the other."

      ORIENTATED TOWARDS NETHERLANDS

The study showed the imams are more orientated towards Netherlands as they come up with the same problems and solve them in the same way. They also use the same sources when they write their sermons. Mr Leemhuis cites an example in the shape of the book entitled: 'Gardens of the virtuous people'.

"A beautiful, pious collection of stories about the life of the prophet Mohammed which is also available in Dutch."

      SAME VIRTUES

According to Mr Leemhuis the virtues that the Imams present to their audiences are the same as the ones that score high among other groups of Dutch people: respect, consideration, reliability and openness.

Two virtues stand out in their sermons: the necessity of good neighbourliness and showing respect towards others.

"Most imams say in their sermons and in interviews that the main thing is to be a good neighbour."

      SHARED OPINIONS

Mr Leemhuis believes the shared opinions of Muslims and other Dutch people about virtuous behaviour provide a good opportunity for Dutch politics:

"If you want to promote the integration of Dutch Muslims and non-Muslims, you have to emphasise the things they have in common and things they can identify with."

    • CIA planning for al-Qaida 'succession crisis'

The U.S. is making "a big and continual push" to capture or kill al-Qaida leader Osama bin Laden, but his demise won't end the organization's menace, CIA Director Michael Hayden said Tuesday in an Associated Press interview.

The CIA is equally interested in those jockeying to replace bin Laden in what he predicted will be a "succession crisis."

"It will be really interesting to see how that plays out. The organization is a lot more networked than it is ruthlessly hierarchical," Hayden said of the group behind the 9/11 attacks on the U.S. "How do you pick the next overall leader?"

A number of Egyptians are now part of al-Qaida's top echelon and may struggle for power among themselves. Bin Laden's current No. 2, Ayman al-Zawahiri, is an Egyptian.

Despite al-Qaida's resilience, taking out bin Laden would be a psychological blow to the organization, Hayden said.

"If there ever was a sense of invulnerability I think killing or capturing him would shatter it once and for all," he said.

    • Hindus and Muslims rush to help Jaipur blast victims

When Indian television news broadcasts appealed for blood donors on Wednesday, a day after the blasts, Yaseef Khan rushed to help.

"How can I sit at home when people are crying for blood?" Khan said.

He was one among many Hindus and Muslims joining to give blood. Both Muslims like Khan & Hindus united on Wednesday to help victims of the bomb blasts, offering the use of their mobile phones, distributing food & fruit juices as relatives swarmed hospitals of Jaipur from the early hours of the morning along with distributing free medicine to those who cant afford it (through voluntary organisations).

"We managed to save at least 150 lives last night because of help from these unknown people," Rakesh Sharma, an orthopaedic surgeon said.

The bombs are thought to be done with the intent to cause hatred between the two faiths followers. "Bombs cannot divide the Hindus and Muslims, it never succeeded and people should know that it is not going to work," Sohail Illyas, a Muslim man.

Hindu's and Muslims were killed in the attacks, which the PM of India & Muslim organisations have condemned. These attacks violated the Quranic principle of the sanctity of life.

    • Czech Muslims organise to screen controversial Dutch anti-Quran film

Yup... suprisingly the first time the film played in Czech was actually organised by the Muslim community themselfs and infact they are planning even more screenings across the country.

So why did the Brno Islamic Foundation hold a public screening on Monday night? Munib Hassan Alrawi is the organisation’s head says:

“First of all we wanted to show that Muslims are ready to accept criticism and they are open to any kind of discussion. Second, we wanted to point out the film is biased and challenge the arguments presented in the film. We also wanted to make it clear whether we agree with what some the Muslims in the film are saying.”

      They also screened another film:

“We also screened a film called Schism, which was made in reaction to this film. It was made by a Muslim and it is structured in the same way as Fitna: it takes extracts from the Bible and links them to the killings of Iraqi people by Western soldiers. The author of Schism openly admits at the end of his film that this is not the right thing to do. So we condemn Fitna and we also condemn any kind of links between Christianity and violence.”

Dutch Muslim leaders appealed for calm in response to the Dutch film and a Pakistani lawmaker will fund a movie to rebut the anti-Quran film likely to be released during Ramadan.

A two-day conference on domestic violence ended on 7th May 2008 on domestic violence.

Experts from across the Kingdom participated in 5 sessions of discussions at the first National Experts Meeting to Fight Domestic Abuse Against Women and Children, with all participants agreeing that Islam does not condone abuse and that the problem should be brought to an end.

“Traditions that allow abuse should be brought to an end,” said Dr. Maha Al-Munief, executive director of the National Family Safety Program (NFSP), which organized the event. “We will start training courses for people who work with abuse victims... We need cooperation from all NGOs,” she said in a press conference held to announce the recommendations. One of the recommendations included a suggestion for the need to have a clear fatwa about the topic that would serve as a legal basis to approach a court.

Speakers in Tuesday’s session included Sheikh Salman Al-Odah, supervisor of the Islam Today website, and Dr. Suhail Zain Al-Abideen, head of the Women’s Section at the National Society for Human Rights.

    • Iran's unlikely hit- drama symapethic to Jews !

On Iran's state-owned tv, Channel One milions of Iranians are tunning into the hit weekly drama, "Zero Degree Turn," that centers on a love story between an French Jewish woman and a Iranian-Palestinian Muslim man.

But this aint no ordinary love story because it shows a heart-wrenching tale of European Jews during World War II. Over the course of the 22 episodes, the hero saves his love from Nazi detention camps, and Iranian diplomats in France forge passports for the woman and her family to sneak on to airplanes carrying Iranian Jews to their homeland.

"Iranians have always differentiated between ordinary Jews and a minority of Zionists," says Hassan Fatthi, the show's writer and director. "The murder of innocent Jews during World War II is just as despicable, sad and shocking as the killing of innocent Palestinian women and children by racist Zionist soldiers," he says.

According to the wsj: Iran's Jews -- along with Christians and Zorastrians -- are guaranteed equal rights in the country's constitution. Iran's Jews are guaranteed one member of parliament and are free to study Hebrew in school, pray in synagogues and shop at kosher supermarkets. Despite Mr. Ahmadinejad's statements, it isn't government policy to question the Holocaust, and the country's supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, hasn't endorsed those views.
