Wanda Sykes Tears Into GOP, Palin (VIDEO)
Ah, one forgets, from time to time, how delightfully ranty comedienne Wanda Sykes can get, but last night on The Tonight Show, Sykes did some aerial hunting of the Republican National Convention - which she termed an "Dr. Evil board meeting," Sarah Palin's media blackout, and - best of all - a diatribe against unregistered voters: "I think that there should be a list. And people who don't vote, we should make a big list, and anything that bad happens, they should get it first. Years from now when we're driving around in our electric cars, we should still make them pay $12 for gas." Leno asks McCain how many houses he has, McCain answers with POW Status
While Ted Kennedy, Michelle Obama and the Obama's daughters were wowing Denver at the DNC, John McCain was sitting down with Jay Leno and bringing up his years as a POW at unexpected moments.
Making light of McCain's inability to put a number on his real estate holdings last week, Leno joked with the Republican nominee that, "for one million dollars, how many houses do you have?"
Rather than reply with either a real answer or a similarly light-hearted joke, McCain brought up his POW status.
"Could I just mention to you Jay, that in a moment of seriousness, I spent five and a half years in a prison cell, I didn't have a house, I didn't have a kitchen table, I didn't have a table, I didn't have a chair..."

McCain, Leno Trade Jibes
BURBANK, Calif. (AP) — Republican John McCain traded jibes with "Tonight" show host Jay Leno, with his age and houses the main target but McCain turned serious to defend his wife's family wealth.
"Could I just mention to you Jay, that in a moment of seriousness, I spent five and a half years in a prison cell, I didn't have a house, I didn't have a kitchen table, I didn't have a table, I didn't have a chair," said McCain, citing his history as a prisoner of war in North Vietnam. "I spent those five and half years not because I wanted to get a house when I got back home."
McCain has come under criticism after he confessed he didn't know how many homes he owns with his wife Cindy. The source of the family's wealth is a Phoenix beer distributorship launched by her father.
"I'm very proud of Cindy's father," McCain said. "He's a guy who barely got out of high school, fought in World War II in the Army, came home and made a business and made the American dream."
His father-in-law "made the American dream" with his business success and has a long history of generosity to charities, McCain said.
"We spend our time in a condominium in Washington, a condominium in Phoenix, some time over here in the state of California and then we have a place up in northern Arizona," said McCain, seeking to deflect Democratic criticism that he's out of touch with working families.
"And my friends I'm proud of my record of service to this country, and it has nothing to do with houses," he said.
Most of the exchanges were lighthearted. McCain turns 72 on Friday, and was making his 13th appearance on the late-night program. In his opening, Leno took note of the British setting fire to the White House 200 years ago.
"The White House was saved by the action of one brave soldier — John McCain," cracked Leno.
Leno also touched on the issue of McCain's wealth, noting that Tropical Storm Fay had damaged countless homes, "Most of them belonging to John McCain."
McCain joked about picking a running mate.
"I know you've been asking about who I want to be my running mate," he said. "Wouldn't it be good to have a person you don't know what party they're with, they have no political principles whatsoever, they may need a job about that time. Who can I be referring to?'"
Leno, who is about to leave NBC, demurred.
"I can make more doing a week in Vegas," Leno said BURBANK, Calif. (AP) — Republican John McCain traded jibes with "Tonight" show host Jay Leno, with his age and houses the ma... more -

Jay Leno is in T-R-O-U-B-L-E
Mr. Leno could face disciplinary action from the WGA for writing his monologue.
Leno met with WGA West President Patric Verrone to discuss his decision to write his own monologue. During the meeting Leno was told that writing the monologue constituted a violation of WGA strike rules.
Did the other hosts "write" or just talk? I mean what do they mean by "write"? They all came back on air. If you just made it up in your head would that have been okay, or, is it the preparation that is most important. I am sure they all didn't just go on their shows and not say anything funny, or anything at all. Mr. Leno could face disciplinary action from the WGA for writing his monologue. ... more -

Letterman returns Wednesday with WGA's praise; Leno to return without it.
A showdown between late-night rivals will be fought on television screens this Wednesday.
Immediately after the writers began striking in November, Letterman and Leno went to reruns.
New episodes start this week, but under different conditions. David Letterman recently made a special agreement with the WGA to allow him to shoot new episodes. He was able to make these arrangements because he owns the production company. Now that Letterman has secured WGA's approval, his shows can feature scripted comedy routines and his famous Top 10 list. WGA approval also makes him more likely to have guests that are members of the Screen Actors Guild.
Things don't look as promising for Leno, who normally brings in more audiences. Leno is returning without the WGA's approval, which means that he will have fewer guests and will have to do without scripted comedy.
Letterman also cut a deal for "The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson." A showdown between late-night rivals will be fought on television screens this Wednesday. ... more -
David Letterman's first guest: Robin Williams
Robin Williams will be David Letterman's first guest upon the return of his "Late Show" on CBS Wednesday.
David Letterman's production company reached an agreement to have his show return with writers.
The appearance of a Hollywood A-lister who can talk a mile a minute may be Letterman's way of quickly trying to draw a distinction between his show and his late-night rivals, who are without writers and may also have trouble booking major entertainers as guests.

Jay Leno and Conan O'Brien Set to Resume Their Shows
Both Jay Leno and Conan O'Brien will be back on the air starting January 2nd, whether or not the Writers Guild strike is over. It would mean putting on their shows without their writers, but apparently opposition from the Guild has eased on the late nite performers since they began paying the salaries of their non-writer staff members.

In Your Face Leno!
So everybody by now has heard that Leno and Conan are coming back to T.V. sans their original writers, but have you heard about the sweetheart deal Dave Letterman is cooking up? Since he owns his show independently from CBS, his production company Worldwide Pants is negotiating an interim deal with the WGA that allows the Late Show host and his writers to return to the airwaves during the strike because it doesn't involve CBS.
