Rinascimento Virtuale: L'arte in Second Life e nei Virtual Worlds a Firenze a Otto...

Virtual Rehab? US Scientists Use Second Life To Cure Alcoholics
US scientists are successfully using Second Life to cure alcoholics and are about to publish first research results. Patients at the Accelerated Recovery Centers are treated not only in Atlanta, but also on Identity Island, which exists only in Second Life. Here, they can participate in group conversations or have individual conversations with their therapists. Furthermore, they receive special training that supports them in their decision to resist alcohol and to remain sober. During the test phase, which has been running for the past nine months, roughly 100 alcoholics have made use of the innovative idea and according to the first research results, virtual rehab really seems to work! A second act for Second Life?
"Last month, its founder Philip Rosedale said he will step down as CEO of Linden Labs - the company which runs the community. He said he was staying on full-time as chairman preferring to focus on innovation rather than people management.
The management part certainly looks like it is getting harder. Over the last two years millions of users all over the world signed up to mix, mingle and play out their fantasies on Second Life. It was the hot thing. The virtual world had its own currency, its own economy and it didn’t take long for the business world to catch on. Companies rushed to open virtual stores and offices.
But the initial hype has faded. Although it has an estimated 13 million registered subscribers, only a small portion - as little as 5 percent - are considered active. Corporations are shuttering their virtual stores. A series of banking scandals prompted Second Life to shut down all virtual-only banks in January. Lawsuits involving everything from land deals to copyright infringement have been filed.
Like real life, Second Life is getting … well … complicated ..."

I never really saw the potential in Second Life. Everything I can do in Second Life, I can do much easier, faster and especially more efficiently using different specialized software. Molotov Alva and His Search for the Creator: A Second Life Odyssey
Filmmaker Douglas Gayeton has produced a documentary film about his avatar Molotov Alva's encounters in Second Life after deciding to abandon real life. The film, shot entirely on the Second Life platform, reveals Alva's introductions to different characters in the virtual world and possibly makes a soul-mate connection. Gayeton has explored similar territory with the animated television program Delta State, and has also collaborated with sci-fi writer William Gibson on a video game based on the feature length film Johnny Mnemonic. The film premieres Thursday, May 15, at 8:00 pm (ET) on Cinemax. Unique Off Grid project at Lake Victoria, Kenya
The first step in establishing a viable global solution for off-grid lighting is a pilot project. OSRAM has started this pilot around eastern Africa's Lake Victoria, addressing local fishermen and their communities. In April 2008, the first O-HUB in Mbita, Kenya, was inaugurated. Lake Victoria was chosen because the local fishermen fishing for sardines at night use kerosene lanterns. The fishermen spend up to 70% of their income on kerosene, so they have a strong interest in efficient lighting.

Live from the Doha Forum
Dancing Ink Productions' Rita J. King and Joshua S. Fouts recently hosted a virtual world event live from the U.S.-Islamic World Forum in Doha, Qatar and simultaneously in the virtual world of Second Life. The event discussed ways in which virtual worlds can be used to build better understanding between the U.S. and the Islamic world. It was a first for all the participants, including Nashwa Al Ruwaini, who has the two top-rated television shows in the Middle East, "Nashwa" and "Poet of Millions." Howard Gordon, the Executive Producer and Head Writer of Fox's hit show "24" also participated, along with Ambassador Cynthia P. Schneider, former U.S. Ambassador to the Netherlands. In a twist, Palestinian Hip-Hop artist Muhammed Mughrabi from Jerusalem and Iranian artist Yas from Tehran, did a freestyle hip-hop performance in Arabic and Farsi, respectively. Second Life Presidents
On the 22nd of April, French are holding the presidential elections. As second life exploded on the internet, French political parties seized the opportunity to expand their advertising to this new online reality world. With the fashionable media interest in second life, one could ask if the French still need headquarters in real life. However, I wanted to discover the 6 most important parties in the real world. On the 22nd of April, French are holding the presidential elections. As second life exploded on the internet, French political parties... more

The Virtual Live Band
The Virtual Live Band (VLB)
We are five members broadcasting live from 5 different locations and four different countries.
The technique is simple. All members of the band have to play using the NinJam software (www.ninjam.com) together and one of them has to stream their output from NinJam to SL (www.secondlife.com). We all log in to SL as well, so that our avatars look like we are playing together.
Bluetom Haller on lead guitar from Germany
Roland Calhern on keyes from France
Mambo Welles on bass from the UK
Vicki Nillson on the drums from upstate NY , USA

Think your way around Second Life
Just think about it. Literally. "People with severe paralysis could find new opportunities from shopping to doing business or making new friends in the virtual world of Second Life by just thinking about it...electrodes attached to the scalp can pick up the electrical changes associated with brain activity. The data can be interpreted by a computer, allowing a user to manipulate his or her on-line persona, or avatar, around the streets of Second Life without using a keyboard or mouse."

2nd Life Virtual Crime. Real-life Lawsuit.
A Second Life user is suing another Second Life user for a "virtual crime" committed in Second Life. There's real money at stake, but is a crime in a virtual world a crime in real life?
I'll bet any lawyer geeks out there (or would they be called "geeky lawyers"?) are dying to know how this turns out. I doubt the court system has much precedent to go off here.
But wait, shouldn't there be a Second Life court system to handle this?

CSI:NY To Solve a Crime In Second Life
Second Life is bracing itself for an influx of new members this coming week with the long awaited episode of CSI:NY does Second Life to be shown in the United States on Wednesday.
The episode will see Mac Taylor (Gary Sinise) entering Second Life to pursue a killer who has killed a Second Life user in a case of virtual stalking gone too far.
CSI:NY fans will be encouraged to join Second Life and investigate the case by following a link on the CBS website. CSI:NY will have three options for CSI-related inworld activities. The first option will allow viewers to walk around virtual New York buildings and visit a CSI lab and play forensic games.
The second option consists of a game called Murder by Zuiker, a unique murder plot which can be solved by users finding clues. The 100 people who come closest to solving the murder will win virtual gifts.
The big tie-in gives new users the ability to become CSI investigators, complete with field kit and tools, and are given a chance to interview suspects and to solve the murder featured in the actual CSI:NY episode. The episode itself will apparently end in a cliff-hanger with the solution not revealed until February.
